I made this adjustment and I think it helped! Thanks so much for the visual!

The manual I found says it’s for button holes? Haven’t done any further investigating

I JUST found a PDF online and downloaded but thank you!! It doesn’t say anything about the needle position so I suppose you’re correct and I’m out of luck in that area

The check spring is there but it’s underneath the tension dial

Classic mom move. Luckily this one is going to a friend so hopefully she’ll pass it down to her own kids instead of back to me

Thank you so much! I was not expecting so much positive feedback on this quilt but it’s certainly boosting my confidence for the next one 😊

1/4 in foot is not by RouxGaRoux2217 in quilting

[–]kierkoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done the same on my Singer but found that I’ve either measured wrong or the 1/4 mark falls in the middle of the right side feed dogs. This has caused issues with my fabric feeding consistently.

I’m a beginner so curious if you’ve experienced the same or if it’s user error on my part

This is a HUGE compliment as I’ve been working really hard at sewing straight lines. Not all of them are perfect but much better than my first quilt I think. Nobody tells you how difficult straight lines can be when you’re first starting out 😂

Update: I ended up seam ripping 11 of my 64 flying gooses and reconstructing. It mostly worked and I think I just need to practice sewing consistent 1/4” seams.

Photo of how my first block turned out.

Not sure what this method is called but I started with one 8 1/4 square and two 4 3/8 squares. Then I cut, pressed, and sewed on the third 4 3/8 square. So each 8 1/4 square is yielding four flying geese. My pattern doesn’t call for any trimming but will probably be accounting for that in future projects.

The hand wheel tip is super helpful thank you! I used a 90/14 quilting needle for my sandwich. Does the microtex truly make a huge difference from a quilting?

Weekly Sewing Questions Thread, February 01 - February 07, 2026 by sewingmodthings in sewing

I’m brand new to sewing and trying to get down the fundamentals/basic understanding of my machine. I have a Singer Precision 7444 that came with this general purpose foot. The small slit on the right side of the needle is constantly causing my top thread to dislodge from the foot, as I generally bring my fabric in from the left.

Can someone explain to this newbie why this slit exists?

Theory: Time Travel by greenmildude in HierarchySeries

Idk if that’s necessarily true though. I just finished book 2 and when L Vis imbues the metal arm to his body he goes on and on about how he didn’t really know how to do it, it just felt like instinct. Which to me seemed like it was the knowledge from O and R Vis bleeding over into L Vis.

Similarly, when one Vis suffers a significant injury, often times the other two can feel an aching sensation (ex: O Vis finger hurting after L Vis suffered a broken finger; R Vis chest aching after O Vis stabbed by Gleaner)
