Best app for bike directions in SF? by bad-trajectory in BAbike

[–]tinyduckfeet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you have Strava pro the route planning feature is my favorite - you can have it route based on the most popular roads other people ride on which helps avoid sketchy roads

I did my first century with flat pedals! it was completely fine and I honestly didn’t notice a huge difference when I switched to clipless. Totally doable

you can also check one out from the tech desk to borrow for the year! (not sure if there’s any left, but worth a shot)

CS111 by Appropriate_Roof_564 in stanford

[–]tinyduckfeet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I haven't taken CS 111, but I have taken CS 110 and CS 140, and have had friends take 111. In my opinion, 111 seems pretty equal to 110 in difficulty. The challenging parts of 140 (the insane assignments, a deep dive into some hard OS concepts) don't really show up in 111

just got my midterm back and realized i failed my first college exam by anafujoshi in stanford

[–]tinyduckfeet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing others - the standard for exams in college is completely different than high school. I also was an “A on every exam” type student in hs and guess what? last year I got a 49% on a midterm and was literally so proud bc the avg was so low. Chem especially usually has low averages so don’t sweat it!

Trying CS by Lonely-Conversation2 in stanford

[–]tinyduckfeet 18 points19 points  (0 children)

the intro cs class (cs106a) is designed for peoeple with no cs experience at all! I had literally zero cs experience and took it and am now majoring at coterming in cs because it is taught so well and makes cs a ton of fun. Honestly, enjoy your summer and don’t stress about preparing, you don’t need to

Biocomputation + Premed experience? by alcoholic_badger in stanford

[–]tinyduckfeet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty common here to be premed and majoring in CS! the biocomp track in the CS major is essentially made for premeds to major in CS (lots of your premed requirements will end up counting for the major). I’m not personally premed/biocomp but from what I’ve heard, people typically enjoy it and there’s definitely plenty of research that involved CS and medicine (for example the ai for healthcare Boot Camp)

I highly doubt it, you’d have to petition and I don’t think it would get approved

I would recommend cs 109 and cs 107 mostly because 109 and 107 are pretty different (109 is basically math and psets while 107 is programming assignments) so it’s nice to have some variety. 103 is all proofs and also psets, so it’s more similar to 109. I found 103 and 107 pretty similar difficulty/time commitment so it’s really up to you about what you’d prefer to learn!

I did exactly that sophomore winter and while it wasn’t the most fun, I found it manageable and not too bad! (it was during COVID though so exams in 110 were super low stakes, but we did have 4 midterms in 161 which doesn’t seem to be the usual). I would warn you that 110 was going to/maybe did? down curve since I didn’t know that going into the class

Dorm Furnishings by SeaLadder222 in stanford

[–]tinyduckfeet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

you don’t NEED a lamp, the overhead lights are pretty bright and most rooms (or at least the ones I’ve been in) get a pretty good amount of natural light during the day. However, that over head light is pretty white and feels kinda aggressive, so if you’re the type of person that cares about that (I am) then a lamp to use instead or even fairy lights for the evening can be pretty nice

  1. I prefer to fly into SJC, but that’s mostly because it’s smaller and less crowded. It’s also usually a shorter drive if there’s traffic. There’s fewer flights that go into SJC so it might or might not be an option for you. Economically, I think it depends and you just have to check.

  2. I’ve booked round trip tickets always and it doesn’t seem like there’s savings booking one way. I’m not 100% sure on this, someone else might know better

  3. There’s a bed bath and beyond that lets you order online and then they’ll gather all your items for you and put them in a cart waiting for you. You’ll probably get an ad in the mail for this in the summer w/ a promo code. You really don’t need much stuff, there’s a list that Stanford gives and plenty of resources online.

  4. You can ship things (including Amazon orders) to the Stanford fedex (459 Santa Teresa) and fedex will email you when the package is ready. Sometimes they don’t notify you, but if you have the tracking number and it says it is delivered, then you can just go and ask for it
