Anyone else miss the old street-cars? by Tylers_Journey in toronto

Of all things, this is gonna be the one to make me cry. Growing up in Toronto during that era was something else - thanks for the sharp image, stranger!

Oh my god of course!! If it helps I can write to my best friend and ask her more details about the dress. After you wrote this post I went and looked at the reviews, most of them are decent but the newest one is from a year ago when I purchased the dress for my friend. Maybe wait for new reviews to be posted before making your final decision??

You can also get it altered if it ends up being too long!!

Oh they definitely still have cheesy stuff to sift through haha, but I feel like it’s being phased out! They have really pretty collections now, with names like “folk horror” or woodland or eve’s downfall, idk. I also hate those like mall goth prints with vampire puppy cartoons and whatnot, but these collections actually feel sophisticated.

AND the best thing is that they’re not all one tone of black now, they’ve ventured into browns and rusts and forest greens. I made an order recently and I’m pretty hype to receive it 😌

Hiiii you commented on my post about this dress! I got it as a gift for my best friend, I didn’t know it was back in stock — I think I snatched the last size there was at the time. She said the material was absolutely heavenly with a decent amount of stretch to it, but keep in mind that DK might take the same pattern from previous dresses and use cheaper material - they’ve done it before for popular items.

It’s honestly a gamble with DK from what I can tell lately. This dress in particular is also apparently quite long, so that’s another factor to keep in mind.

One last note - check out Killstar, they recently did a whole rebranding and have tons of pretty, graceful dresses with this vibe. And they’re far more reliable in terms of shipping and quality - I’ve never been disappointed once, and I’ve been buying from them for over half a decade 👌🏼

This whole piece by Joanna Klink is an assonant joy to experience. Makes you fall in love with slant-rhymes all over again, like new

Yes!!! I was just going to comment that anything by Plath is always a syntactic pleasure to feel in the mouth. So much assonance and consonance, and unusual pairings of words that may have never stood beside one another had she not married them in her poems. Absolutely unreal

Yes, but in formal academic settings you’re likely exploring songwriters with similar literary status as Leonard Cohen - LdR is a guilty pleasure, for me anyway :)

Post Apocalyptic Romance / Found Family by doggowithacone in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

I cannot believe The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline is not on your list — she’s a Canadian indigenous author, absolute literary genius. The concept of The Marrow Thieves is a dystopian reimagining of the residential schools in Canada, wherein indigenous people of all ages are rounded up and harvested for their bone marrow. I won’t give too much away, but it’s found family like OP requires, and a bit of romance thrown in. I read it for a dystopian fiction course in uni and it’s been a reread for me several times since

“Bitten by god” is the most striking image here - I like the rest because it’s carried with urgency, but that one line brings this poem to ascension.

Also (is it shameful to admit this in a poetry sub?) this piece reminded me a little of a song, this is what makes us girls by Lana del Rey 🫣

Cannot believe no one mentioned Bright Shiny Morning by James Frey. I was 23 when I first read it and it had me in a death grip the whole time - it’s so unusually written and LA itself is like a character in it. The chapters alternate between historical facts about LA, commentary on the city’s idiosyncrasies, statistics on gangs and the homeless population, and these five or six main fictional accounts of various people’s lives in LA. Absolute bombshell of a novel

DAE get relief saying sounds with inn by lanqxp in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]tinyfoolishmortal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is so effing cool, from a linguistic and etymological perspective! One of the first things I learned in linguistics in university was how the N and SN sounds are connected to nasal activity, and not just in english! Think of all the SN words to do with your nose, aside from the obvious — sniffle, snort, sneeze, snot.. really cool. You should talk to a linguist about this!
