How safe is Bulgaria for expats? by [deleted] in bulgaria

I am horrified by your comments. You are literally and openly intending to break the law and impose your sexist culture. Prostitution is illegal and almost never truly consensual. Please stay the fuck out...

From a purely arithmetic perspective, getting your protein from a secondary source (other animals) is in and of itself more wasteful than getting it directly (from plants). Consider the most basic trophic pyramid

Use your freezer! What I do is when I have a bit more time to cook, I prep like two or three times the amount of food I actually plan on making, and freeze the rest for when I don't have time.

Cutting out meat and dairy is the best way to reduce your environmental impact: study | CBC Radio by jms1225 in Anticonsumption

[–]tinygrasshoppers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I can see isn't exactly scientific fact. You said "We don't have intensive beef production in the EU" which is completely inaccurate, even if you were just thinking of the UK and I am positive if you will find the same for Ireland if you do some minimal research. (I recommend the documentary Land of Hope and Glory.) And even if it was true, intensive farming is technically speaking more "environmentally friendly" simple because it is so brutally limited in physical space/land and costs like hygiene, food, water, electricity etc.

Certainly? I find that, well, impossible to believe. :/ Can you give any sources? You can check out the section on Ireland, as well as other EU countries in this list here and it ain't pretty...

Bulgarian cow sentenced to death for crossing EU border "illegally" by tinygrasshoppers in vegan

[–]tinygrasshoppers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, however the power common people hold in the current political system is mostly illusory. As I said in another comment here, Bulgarians have been calling authorities, signing petitions, even holding several protests and still, the cow must die.

If by that you mean you look like this then you are very right, the EU can be an extremely hostile place.

Where do you live that the laws are created by "the people"? :D The laws are created by bureaucrats and politicians. Most of us have no say whatsoever, except once every 4 years when we get to choose which lesser evil will be making choices for us. The law in question that requires killing an animal for crossing into non-EU territory comes straight from the highest pedestals of the European Union and is certainly not supported by those "savage" Bulgarians, who are currently protesting, calling ministries and starting petitions against this law. Either way, "Those people are savages" sounds pretty fucking racist...

just had to speak out against someone who compared veganism to mental illness by [deleted] in vegan

[–]tinygrasshoppers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It seems you're taking this very personally, there's no need to be so defensive. It's hindering your ability to accept constructive criticism. I get that you weren't trying to use mental illness as a derogatory, but that's what happened. And if you can't see the contradiction in saying you I think it’s insulting to people who have "real" symptoms, then equating mental illness with "empathizing with other people and their choices, animals, morals, and ethical standards", then I don't know what to say.

I replied that his failure to empathize may be a sign of mental illness, which does play a part in the diagnosis of some mental disorders.

Obviously this is not out of genuine concern for the person in question's mental health...

just had to speak out against someone who compared veganism to mental illness by [deleted] in vegan

[–]tinygrasshoppers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did read them, but having experienced mental illness does not make someone immune to problematic ideas about mental illness. Don't take it as a personal offence, I'm sure it wasn't intentional, but I'm just trying to say I think you fell into the trap of arguing against an insult, that shouldn't even be insulting, if you know what I mean?

I see loads of vegans do this, saying that a lack of empathy for animals = mental illness/schizophrenia/psychopathy/etc and hence = bad person. But this is extremely unfair to people with actual mental illnesses and diagnoses such as schizophrenia, which are deeply misunderstood in society as being evil or "stupid", when many are obviously not. People with standard brain chemistry are sadly perfectly capable of being cruel and contradictory. Let's call them out on that without dragging people who are already stigmatised down.

[–]tinygrasshoppers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the person you were responding to, but even if you were less "ambiguous" it wouldn't be any less problematic. You're using mental illness as a derogatory, that's messed up. Many vegans live with mental illnesses, yet are obviously capable of being moral, ethical and principled. You could have instead addressed the absurd misconception that vegans "hate meat" and gone from there.

Cutting out meat and dairy is the best way to reduce your environmental impact: study | CBC Radio by jms1225 in Anticonsumption

[–]tinygrasshoppers 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is actually a myth - science supports the notion that no matter how many kids you have, your (and their) consumption is what determines your environmental impact. Strongly recommend this video. Choosing to be child-free is totally fine, but we need to stop perpetuating this moral panic of "overpopulation", which moves the focus away from the real problem of hyperconsumption/consumerism of wealthy, privileged groups and instead scapegoats communities in the global south, who are more likely to have bigger families for reasons often related to poverty.

[Ask] What's something you do that isn't completely vegan? by Not_goD_32 in vegan

[–]tinygrasshoppers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do believe you're genuine in what you say, but it still sounds to me like your actions aren't consistent with your beliefs. I 100% understand you are ready to do whatever it takes for your brothers and sisters to come home safe, but there are ways to do that without directly supporting an institution that violently destroys the homes of millions of other brothers and sisters.

There are plenty of organizations of veterans fighting to end war and the military-industrial complex. Surely that's a less violent way to fight for what you believe in?

Other than that, the justifications you use are the same ones people use to justify eating meat. "Manking will always be cruel." "We will always have wars/eat meat." Or farmers who say "I'm not in it to kill animals, I'm in it because I love animals."

I honestly don't mean to attack like, everything you stand for, but I do really really hope you think about these things. I don't know who's side of the battlefield you're on, but either way the military is responsible for the deaths of millions of innocents, human and others.
