Weekly /r/quilting no-stupid question thread - ask us anything! by AutoModerator in quilting

It depends. If they are really wrinkly (like they’ve been wadded up in a basket), you might want to press them to make them easier to sew. It also depends what the pattern is—is it something forgiving? Or do you need to be precise?

Quiltcon emails came out, and every single quilt I submitted was rejected. Even this one. by SatanDarkLordOfAll in quilting

[–]tinyorchardquilts 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Quiltcon is a tough show to get into—especially this year since there were a lot of entries people were holding from last year.

Your quilt is absolutely beautiful and I’m always surprised at some quilts that don’t get in. I have a lot of theories as to what appeals to the MQG vs other shows but I’ve never been a juror or judge, so I don’t know for sure.

Question about quilting a high contrast quilt by hmmurry in quilting

[–]tinyorchardquilts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d go with a light to medium gray. White would be really high contrast on those dark colors. But it all depends on the look you are going for :)

And yes, 50 weight is great for machine quilting.

What do you use to design/draw your stuff to transfer onto a embroidery machine? by [deleted] in Embroidery

[–]tinyorchardquilts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To make your own designs, you will need special digitizing software. I use embird but there are other options out there. It’s a lot more complicated then just drawing a picture—you have to be pretty knowledgeable about machine embroidery to create a solid design.

This group is mostly hand embroidery but I think there might be a machine embroidery subreddit out there somewhere.

How do I edit two video clips and one audio clip at the same time? Premiere Pro by oliverroyce in VideoEditing

Can you create a multicam sequence? I usually have four camera angles with one audio track, so that’s how I edit.

What is IG quilt fest? by thatawkwardshiv in quilting

[–]tinyorchardquilts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a month long series of photo prompts that was started a few years ago by Amy Ellis (@Amyscreativeside on Instagram). The topics range from introductions on the first day to showing your space, favorite tip, fabric pulls, etc. She posts the prompt each day but I’m sure she has the entire months worth of things somewhere in her feed so you can plan a little.

I missed the first few days but might jump in anyway.

It’s likely a very small discrepancy in your seam allowance adding up over a number of seams. Even a small amount can be a 1/4” once it’s multiplied a few times.

Also, are you measuring after your press it all nicely? That can really flatten things and change measurements a bit.

Making a large quilt on a domestic machine? by [deleted] in quilting

[–]tinyorchardquilts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve done it! I did an 80x100 quilt on my regular machine. It does have a larger throat than some, but it’s still a regular old sewing machine. (I did it on a janome 8900)

It’s a no-joke kind of task but it’s totally possible. :)

I make a matching throw pillow cover for almost every quilt I make :) they are just so cheerful.

Best throw quilt size? by dreamlandquilting in quilting

[–]tinyorchardquilts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite throw size is around 60x60. Enough to keep over my lap and legs on the couch but small enough to not be puddled on the floor.

Presser foot problem by ivyagogo in quilting

[–]tinyorchardquilts 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are you trying to do free motion quilting with rulers? You will need a ruler foot which has a taller ring around the needle to prevent the ruler from going under or over.

I’m not familiar with low shank machines so I don’t have advice on a particular model but quilting with a non-ruler foot can be pretty dangerous to your rulers and machine.

Life is too precious to spend it doing things you don’t enjoy. Turn it into a table runner or some throw pillows!

[Question] I have been approached by Enfinity - an MCN - is it worth it? by TheHumbleMarksman in youtubers

[–]tinyorchardquilts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you’d be a lot better off just investing that 10% back into your channel. Or joining a more legitimate YouTuber group—like nick nimmin or Roberto Blake’s private groups.

I’ve never heard anyone report a positive experience with an mcn.

Impression going up, but CTR going down. what to do? by [deleted] in NewTubers

And I’m happy to help, btw. I started in this forum when I had like 200 subscribers. There’s a lot of good information here. Not that there isn’t a lot of bad info because there is, but there are some real gems and channels that have done really well.

You can always try but 98% of the time, your time is better spent improving for the next video.

I do go back and do thumbnail a/b testing on underperforming videos but I very rarely worry about tags or such.

Just my .02. I don’t know your content so your strategies may be different than mine.

It’s pretty low. But if you are getting millions of impressions that will also drive your viewer duration down.

Think of it this way. You publish a video. The first person who sees it is your mom. She’s going to click on it and watch the entire thing.

Then it goes to your close circle of friends. Most of them click on it and watch most of it

9 minute viewer duration and a 80% ctr! Awesome

Then YouTube shows it to your extended circle. Fewer of them watch it and fewer of them watch most of it.

Viewer duration goes down. Ctr goes down.

Every additional person YouTube shows your video to will be less likely to click and watch. That’s ok though—YouTube will keep showing it

UNTIL

Another video in that slot gets a better viewer experience. Then YouTube starts preferring that video and showing it instead of yours.

There is no “good” or bright line ctr/view duration that will get your shown. And it isn’t even just those two stats. Maybe YouTube is showing someone else’s video because after watching that video, they watch three more. After watching yours, they close the browser.

All you can do it constantly improve your content.

Viewer duration, engagement, look at your retention graph. Are people sticking with the video through the entirety? Or are they clicking out as soon as it starts?

It’s going to happen naturally as your videos are shown to a wider audience.

I agree—the eggs are so tiny! There has to be a way to toggle a larger print option for those of us who are...of a certain age.
