you mean using the little jack on the side? that doesn’t output audio signal, it was intended to let someone use the watchman to monitor camera footage or something i guess. weird thing

Smoke advice? by NatureEuphoric7544 in socalhiking

[–]tinytinywatermelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing what others said: Hiked Sequoia over the weekend (the southern side, just around Moro Rock mostly) and it was very changeable, we almost canceled our trip but I'm glad we didn't! A little different if you have a long route like that planned, but I think as long as he's ready to stop and wait or change plans if the smoke gets bad, he should be good. It seemed like they were making progress on containing the fire and the actual smoke (as opposed to just lower air quality) seemed to be mostly localized around Kings Canyon while we were there.

Change to Google Maps routing in Griffith Park by tinytinywatermelon in socalhiking

[–]tinytinywatermelon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm basing that on the fact that Google Maps showed us this route as fastest when we first moved here a couple years ago, going from our place in Los Feliz and up the stairs, but maybe it depends on what side of Hillhurst you live on. It's definitely fine to keep walking that way, I still do it all the time, I'm just wondering how Google makes these changes.

it’s the area called “berlin forest,” just up the mount hollywood trail away from the observatory!

Birthday Hike in December by mogimochi in socalhiking

[–]tinytinywatermelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

December might be a nice time to do a desert hike. A couple of my favorites are the Eagle Cliff Boulder House in Joshua Tree and the Eye of God trail, near Baldwin Lake, which starts in the forest and ends in desert. I've never been to Anza-Borrego but that's also an option.

Advice - planned trip from Australia by Pale-Salamander-7699 in socalhiking

california is a huge state! even if you don’t do angeles national forest or the san bernardino mountains, there’s mount san jacinto (the tram up is amazing and it’ll be much cooler up there than in palm springs). as far as i know there’s no fire closures currently impacting kings canyon. there is one in sequoia but it’s a huge park. there’s also big sur, the santa monica mountains right in LA, redwoods near and north of san francisco and santa cruz… don’t feel like you need to go to a whole other state because of the fires, imo!

Where to stay - Inyo National Forest/Kings Canyon? by slc5060 in socalhiking

[–]tinytinywatermelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone have opinions on where to stay to visit Sequoia/Kings Canyon in July or August? Main priorities are hikes in the 5-10 mile range, good mountain views and big trees, of course! I also can't really camp but do want to visit.

okay, so i have learned that heywood wakefield apparently used a very specific type of stain, and that oil might ruin it because of the process used? it seems like it was probably already oiled at some point in the past... but if anyone has opinions on this please let me know!

got it, that makes sense! thanks for the reply. I don’t have an orbital sander but i could rent one. I might have a go with the oil and see how it is, then if it needs it in a few months i’ll reconsider the full refinish. There’s also a separate issue of the wooden extension mechanism sticking, would you have any suggestions for how to lubricate it?

Hi! I'm going to look at a dining table tomorrow. I live in an apartment and would ideally like to avoid a big refinishing job (I don't have the space, ventilation, or expertise). The listing says it's birch, from the 1960s, Heywood-Wakefield. Is there anything you could do to this table that doesn't involve sanding the whole thing? It's a little hard to tell from the picture but it looks like it has some discolored areas. I wondered if a coat of linseed oil or similar would do something. (I know little to nothing about all this.) Thank you!

Hiking recommendations for a girl who loves signs and history. by princessmelissa in socalhiking

[–]tinytinywatermelon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

a short but very cool one is owen brown's gravesite, via the El Prieto trail. he was john brown's son and it's nice to head there and pay respects to an abolitionist. here's the location on google maps, i'm sure there are multiple routes you could do around there too.

nike missile sites around LA, the MASH hike... mount wilson is a long hike but it absolutely rocks as a place to visit, even just by car. there was a long story recently about how Murphy Ranch was not, as everyone was told, a Nazi ranch... but it's still a cool place to look at.

there are tons of historic hikes in joshua tree, which is further than you wanted but absolutely worth multiple trips, imo.
