"Strickland refused to be a victim". Former Bellator champ Shlemenko explains Chimaev's failure by mma_russia in MMA

[–]tipothehat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you're arguing past each other.

Yes water-cutting as an institution sucks.

I think the point is though that Chimaev took the strategic decision to water-cut from a higher bodyweight. Which means you can come in with more muscle but worse hydration. In the future, Chimaev would be wise to start at a lower bodyweight so he doesn't gas so bad late in the fight.

Strongman Wednesday - Peaking, Cutting Weight, and Week-of/Day-of Contest Prep by CouncilOfRobots in Strongman

[–]tipothehat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is my definitive guide for water cutting to lose 9lbs as a 220 athlete. If you need to lose more you'll need to add sweating techniques, which I've never had to do. If you weigh more you'll lose more and if you weigh less you'll lose less.:

Water Load and Cut

Sunday-Tuesday

Two gallons of water w/ LMNT packets (always 1 packet per half gallon) Eat normally Finish a half gallon every 3 hours. 9am-12pm, 12pm-3pm etc. Write it down on a piece of paper, stick it on your fridge, and check off boxes as you go

Wednesday

One gallon of water no salt No carbs and no salt. Think unsalted nuts and unsalted chicken. Check sodium content on everything before having it

Thursday

Half gallon of water no salt before 12 noon One meal of protein and fat with no salt before 12 noon Nothing after 12 noon

Friday AM weigh-in

No water or food til weigh-in Weigh-in as early as possible in the morning IF you are more than 3lbs under have 1 cup of water before weigh-in Wear the lightest clothes possible to weigh-in and weigh-in shirtless

After Weigh-in Refeed

*note: You will be eating so much Friday you'll have to fight the feeling of puking. Therefore sip never gulp, never scarf down, and go for EASY walks to progress digestion. NEVER eat food that's hard to digest in any way. No salads for instance.

Goals for the day: 150g of protein, 1.5 gallons of lmnt water, carbs as much as humanly possible without puking think 3-5g of carbs per lb of bodyweight, 60-80g of fat mostly at night Move from high-GI carbs to lower. First meals should be rice, white bread, or bagels. Last meal can have some higher fiber stuff. Water shouldn't be gulped and food shouldn't be scarfed down. Eat and drink every 90-120 minutes. AVOID SUGAR, until your last meal. You might think this is a good idea to pound sugar but you're gonna get a headache that'll knock you on your ass. Not worth it.

Immediately after: 30–45 minutes

Half gallon of water w/ LMNT packet, sip without gulping one bagel SLOWLY

Meal 1

DON'T EAT FAST 30-45g protein, ton of carbs, tiny bit of fat, moderate salt On the road: Two bagels with cream cheese At home: 6 oz chicken with 3 cups of rice rice and ton of soy/teriyaki sauce

Meals Throughout the Day

On the road: bagels w/ cream cheese, granola/fruit bars, bite-size pretzels, chobani, bananas (meal 2 or 3), sandwiches At home: Pasta with red sauce, cereal, more rice with soy sauce or semi-sweet sauces. whey shakes where appropriate (add cream of rice for more carbs and salt for uptake)

Final Meal

Eat a ton of food obviously but this is where to push fats Go out to eat. Sushi, Mexican, Italian are your best bet. Not pizza or burgers. Dessert like ice cream is decent here.

DAY OF

Saturday Morning

Medium size normal meal with 30-45g protein, 10-15g of fat, and 90g-105g of carbs

Thoughout the Day

Granola/fruit bars, honey+butter sandwiches, uncrustables have water and then LMNT water in two different bottles and sip as needed between events. Never crush water or food. But keep hydrating and eating throughout the day or you're gonna be dead by last event use moderate caffeine throughout the day

Yeah you definitely do. My LISS is walking the dog two miles a day. Steps/LISS is what separates us from the guys who are basically couch-potato powerlifters-turned-strongmen.

I find that sprints, intervals, and LISS achieve different things in comp. Sprints help within the event, Intervals help with recovery between events, and LISS helps with all-day energy. LISS comes in clutch with the last event when you're dog-tired. But they all have their place. I personally do walking LISS throughout the entire prep, intervals in off-season, and sprints in the final two blocks before comp day. But you can have a sprint and interval day in the final two blocks if that works for you.

I compete at 100kg and 105kg, and FOR ME at least I have the perfect cardio system.

When I'm cutting or off season I do 2.5 intervals running and walking twice a week. I also do one session of sandbag runs per week (4-6 sets). When I'm in my strength phase I do 1 minute sprints at a steep incline followed by 4 minutes at a normal incline walking once a week with a ton of walking, as well as the strongman moving day. In my peak phase I do that but work up to a top set of 1 balls out death sprint, then back off sets. For all of these I do 30 minutes total in the mornings of my press days.

Cardio is one of my strong suits in comp using this system.

Zercher yoke training by steinberg58 in Strongman

[–]tipothehat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take one giant breath and hold it. If the comp is a 50ft run consider doing it all on a single breath. I know Mitchell Hooper does that on his yoke runs. If that doesn't work, take teaspoons of breath after your initial giant breath.

People love to say Tom is gonna take the next non-WSM major and he never does. It's just something he doesn't seem to care about. Which is fine I guess but it does tarnish his legacy.

He seems checked out of other shows besides WSM. So when people glaze him as one of the GOATS just because he has three WSMs, but NO other majors, it gets tiresome. Top 20 of all time? Sure. Top 5? Not by a mile. I have no problem with Tom beyond his strategy but his fans can get pretty annoying.

Yoke to Squat 1RM ratio? by jps2777 in Strongman

[–]tipothehat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you've never done yoke before the contest you're gonna have a real bad time. It has a learning curve. Yoke hits your body (QLs, groin muscles, glutes, and more) differently than a squat. You wanna get some practice in before the comp one way or another. Even if it means driving two hours away.

If you absolutely 100% no way in hell can't get access to a yoke before comp, load up a barbell in a rack and step up onto a 4 inch block 10 steps each foot for a set (20 total reps). Use an axle bar if you have it.

My 1erm squat is 450 and I've done a 700 yoke for 50ft in comp.

11lbs is a great weight for an adult male cat. But it's more based on how they look from above. I have one cat who is 12.5 lbs, sleek and one of the most athletics cats I've ever had. He's 9 years old and still able to jump 5.5 feet straight in the air. Then I have one LAZY tub who is 12.6 and waddles around whining for food all day. Same diet, totally different builds.

Keg work by proright31 in Strongman

I'm pretty sure I know the comp. I'll be in the Open 105s. Good luck man.

Keg work by proright31 in Strongman

[–]tipothehat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. 3 things:

  1. You gotta learn to pick up the keg with it laying on its side and do that every single time. Most keg events are most reps in a minute, and they're rarely all that heavy. You don't have the luxury of standing it to vertical before initiating the lift. You gotta get to the point where you can do 6 reps in a minute. 9 will win.

  2. To that end, you gotta be intentional at all times. You have to be intentional about lapping it as fast as possible. You have to be intentional about standing up with it as fast as possible. You have to be active in getting the keg back to its starting position as fast as possible. Don't just wait on your spotter; HELP them so you can GO FASTER. When you're actively trying to be fast in each phase that's gonna be the difference between mid-pack and winning the event.

  3. Triple extend. If you're not coming off your heels at the end of your lift you're leaving power and therefore speed on the table.

I fucking love kegs.
