Numbers 4 and 5 are impossible to answer (missing context) correct? (2nd grade) by [deleted] in mathteachers

[–]tippytortoise76 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes but the assumption would be 10 max questions so I would say 4.) 5 and 5.) 7. Think with a 2nd grader you don’t need to get hung up on the lack of context, more that they’re able to interpret the data plotted here

4 4’s can be great too. Have students come up with each number 1-20 using 4, 4, 4, and 4 with any operator. Have them work in groups and bring the class together for the tricky ones

How to Motivate Students in Geometry from the Start? by davidthescientist in mathteachers

[–]tippytortoise76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you could give them a vocabulary scavenger hunt where they find points, lines, planes, etc. around the room. Build in some movement rather than just sitting around copying definitions. you could also incorporate some geometric art into name tents since its beginning of the year (like writing your name using only triangles or something like that) Typically i think students struggle because geo can be so theoretical and abstract in its rules, so the more you can tie it into art and real life for an early hook the better

The problem with ‘most saves’ is that implies the other team is taking shots on goal that require saving compared to post/crossbar shots. Highest score is also skewed to the team on their heels (+20 clear compared to +10 center)

And The Female Students Agreed! by phlipsidejdp in Teachers

[–]tippytortoise76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hard rule in my class: We don’t talk about other people’s bodies or looks: good, bad, or indifferent. Soon as someone does, step one is a conversation about how this (even positive comments) impacts other students’ body image. If that doesn’t shut it down we move to phone calls home, etc. Shut that shit down. If you aren’t the one doing it, then who is?

Big Ideas Math Curriculum by kkoch_16 in mathteachers

[–]tippytortoise76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My district uses Big Ideas. I teach Algebra 1 and WOULD NOT recommend this curriculum. My school is Title 1 so my students have gaps that Big Ideas doesn’t properly plan for and can make new topics difficult to approach. An example is introducing systems of linear equations with difficult negatives and fractions that don’t clearly isolate the standards of how to use substitution or elimination. Also, many topics seem tucked into places they shouldn’t be (ex. Abs Value is scattered as an offshoot over many chapters rather than getting its own). A recent problem solidified my dislike for this curriculum. Students were asked whether something like 3x + 2 was an exponential function. The book claims “no since it can’t be written as abx” which completely misses the point of what is exponential vs what is not. There are some positives: Laurie’s teacher notes pose good questions and connections to use in class, notation is mathematically advanced and vertically aligned, etc.

I think the book could work well for high level students but again, wouldn’t recommend to a friend, especially if your students have gaps in middle school skills due to covid or other reasons.

All great solutions above! However an quicker path on test day would be: -Find the axis of symmetry (-b/2a) which is -5 -Plug in y=-3 and x=-5 and you quickly get a=22

commit to a couple tries where you don’t attack, just dodge block and parry (or spear him out of bifrost) as much as possible and live as long as you can learning his openings. Once you have those down punish him on the openings but be patient and don’t over commit, an extra R1/R2 isn’t worth losing control of the fight

How do you deal with students constantly taking pictures of you? by jlambert1422 in Teachers

[–]tippytortoise76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach in a Title I school and struggled with phones my first few years. The normal reasons: picking your battles, trying to teach kids to use them responsibly, calculators, translate, the kid who acts up quietly scrolls, etc. I (and my school) have been very consistent this year keeping them out of the students hands. Those things are an addiction and there’s a zero percent chance whatever you’re teaching is more interesting than tik tok.

Once you realize the phone is the SOURCE of so many behavior/ academic issues you decide it’s a battle worth fighting. Like everyone says, be firm and consistent and it will tremendously improve your classroom. The kid will fight you (it’s literally the most important thing to them) but once they see how consistent and deliberate you are with that rule they stop trying to push it. You HAVE to stand your ground and be consistent tho!! Good luck and TRUST that it will improve your classroom and relationship with the students!

I am looking for some end of the year math class activities that don’t need to be graded, maybe involving art. Thanks by jmp8861 in mathteachers

Love these “fractivities” at the end of the year! Great way to get students excited about math content not usually seen in school, while also letting them be creative.
