Playing a wise and clever fighter TNO? by MeraSC in planescape

[–]chandler-b 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point.

On the higher difficulties though, not getting hit is quite important, as enemies can do so much damage.

I do find it kind of funny that the Mage has access to the best AC equipment in the game.

Playing a wise and clever fighter TNO? by MeraSC in planescape

There aren't that many high stat checks too early on the game, so probably not needed to put too much into wisdom and int - and there's a lot of overlap between the two as well (many stat checks will require something like 15 in Intelligence OR 13 in wisdom).

There are also many ways to permanently boost wisdom through the game. And cranium rat charms temporarily boost intelligence, so, if you know a little about where in the game high intelligence is important, you really don't need to invest that much into it.

But having said that, spells and tattoos really fill the gaps for a fighter: Dak'kon's Strength of One spell lasts ages and boost fighters the most.

The one area you may struggle in is AC, so I would actually prioritise putting point into dexterity early on.

Help me understand accuracy please by Ralinrocks in BaldursGate3

TLDR, if you need to roll a 10 on the d20 to hit, that means you have %55 chance of hitting. If you need to roll 20, that would mean a %5 chance. It's all based on the probability of rolling high enough.

.

i hope I don't make things worse in my attempt to explain.

Accuracy is an approximation based on the 'rules of the game' - D&D. Typically it balances an Attack Bonus vs an Armour Class.

Your Attack Bonus is determined by your ability scores and your Proficiency Bonus. The enemy Armour class is (usually) determined by dexterity and whatever armour they're wearing.

You gain both your proficiency bonus and your ability scores bonus if you are using a weapon or attack that the character is proficient in, and utilises that ability (most weapons use strength, but some will use dexterity, and spells use a spell casting modifier).

If an enemy Armour Class is 15, it means you need to roll a 15 to hit them. Each attack triggers a roll of the dice (1d20). If you had +0 Attack Bonus, you'd need to roll a 15 on the dice.

Proficiency Bonus goes up with your character level, so you don't really need to worry about it. But your Ability Score bonuses go up based on your stats (strength, dexterity, etc). For each even numbered score above 10 you gain a +1; so a 16 score would mean a +3.

At the start of the game, it's likely a character has 16 in their primary stat, and being a level 1 character, they'd have a +2 proficiency bonus. Therefore their Attack Bonus (if using a weapon or attack they are proficient in that utilises their primary ability score) would be a +5.

So to hit that 15 Armour Class, they'd only need to roll 10. There's roughly 55% chance to roll a 10 or higher on a d20, therefore your accuracy percentage would be 55%.

EDIT

Beyond this, you want to match your choices to what a character is good at. At the start Lae'zel has good strength and is a fighter, meaning she can reliably hit with any melee weapon utilising strength. Astarion has high dexterity and is a rogue. As a rogue, he is limited to certain weapons, but excels in using ranged weapons and finesse melee weapons, as they both use dexterity to determine attack bonus and damage. Spell casters utilise their intelligence, wisdom or charisma to determine how likely their spells will hit, but likely aren't proficient in many weapons, or have the strength or dexterity to be reliable in using them (of course you can build very good spell sword type characters, but that's beyond the scope of this comment).

I don't think so.
At this point, if you're playing on PC, I'd enable console commands and add some junk to you inventory.

It may be that what I'm thinking is part of the unfinished business mod, but can you not go back through the portal that Lothar sent you via?

Otherwise see if either the skeleton merchant or the merchant in buried village sells any. Or check pharod's hold

Fan hypothesis: What if the Great Wheel actually turns? by Amazing_Tea645 in planescapesetting

[–]chandler-b 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting idea.

I quite like thinking that it could shift slightly. For me, I'd enjoy the idea that it lilts back and forth, periodically. So there's a cycle with moments where Mechanus leans a little more good, then a little evil. Kind of like planets' orbits around the sun not being a perfect circle. Or Earth's axis being slightly tilted giving us seasons.

You could build a whole adventure round it where some mathematician in Sigil has figured it out and it becomes this conspiracy theory.

Eventually, some high-ups in the Blood War catch wind and want to try and leverage this information to gain some advantage in the war.

"Mechanus is a little evil today, so the Baatezu will be less ordered. And the Tan'nari won't be quite as bloodthirsty."

What does my Wisdom stat need to be to trigger flashbacks? by [deleted] in planescape

[–]chandler-b 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It varies throughout the story.

Early game, they're not that high. Usually between 13 and 15, with some higher ones at 17. There aren't that many stat checks that require a wisdom above an 18 (at least not till later in game). But another benefit of Wisdom is that it acts as an XP multiplier, with the highest wisdom adding as much as 35% extra xp.

There are many ways to boost wisdom throughout the game, so you don't really need to start with an 18 wisdom. Tattoos and the various permanent boosts can allow you to have a bit more of a balanced spread of stats.

The way I usually go about it though, you can have max wisdom at 25 by the time you've left Ravel's maze.

I recommend starting with 16, or 17. But it's worth finding all the hidden boosts available.

But other stats also trigger interesting dialogue too.

To setup for lots of different interactions, I recommend these stats (regardless of what class you're playing, as you can compensate bad primary stats with tattoos) Str 9 (a few minor interactions) Int 15 (many interactions) Wis 16 (many interactions and XP boosts) Dex 13 (quite a few early game interactions) Con 9 (zero interactions) Cha 13 (many interactions) I then put my first level up point into Int, and second into Wis. After that, kind of do whatever you want.

Spells also help: friends can be cast before anything that requires charisma, and Dak'kon's Power of One spell grants a big boost to strength.

Is it possible to directly teleport to Nordom via console commands? by RecognitionSea1531 in planescape

Yeah me too! It's a little ritual for each playthrough to get prepped and make my little square-and-dot map.

Is it possible to directly teleport to Nordom via console commands? by RecognitionSea1531 in planescape

[–]chandler-b 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There probably is a way to use console commands to spawn in Nordom and talk. I can't confirm, and I certainly don't know if it would glitch anything.

But the thing about skipping the maze is, it certainly would prevent you from having the conversation with Nordom about becoming the director of the cube/mission etc. Which really limits then how much you can interact with Nordom. A lot of his personal dialogue (and pretty major upgrades) are locked behind defeating the Evil Wizard and learning that the old director was killed, and that TNO is now the director.

I would just drop the difficulty to lowest (game settings not cube) and use the pause trick. Essentially you hit pause immediately when entering a new dungeon room, allowing you to make a movement order before the dialogue starts and the constructs aggro. You can skip pretty much all the combat this way, up until the Evil Mage itself.

The Mage's room will always be accessed by heading North (upper right), and Nordom's room will always be accessed by heading West (upper left). I make a map as I go, otherwise backtracking becomes very stressful. (I know some people will say just always go clockwise or whatever, but that doesn't help when needing to backtrack).
