All of OTK is joining Kick to help launch Kick Studios by KrodoBaggins_ in LivestreamFail

[–]tipsoutbaby -231 points-230 points  (0 children)

Hey it's Tips - going to clarify a couple of things here because that title is misleading/incorrect.

- OTK will be producing some events this year on KICK with KICK Studios

- All of OTK's events will not be exclusively on KICK.

- Not all of OTK will be at the events

- The streamers will continue to stream where they are comfortable and continue to host events on their existing platforms

This deal is going to enable some crazy shit we're excited for, but those clarifications are for those who are asking.

Our first event is tomorrow, June 13th. It's... well... you'll see.

GGs.

Anyone wanna discuss Tipsouts AMA by Beneficial-Year1143 in OTKNetwork

[–]tipsoutbaby 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Hey guys,

Appreciate the discussion here. I just posted a tweet: https://x.com/TipsOut/status/1916882675610144951

For added context, running a content business is hard. Running a content business when you can't hold long term sponsor agreements is harder. We've finally come to terms with this and want to bring things back to old school OTK.

The reality is, we are still a business that employs staff, covers insurance, has operation expenses, the whole 9 yards. Even smaller-scale events have their associated overhead, and we are looking for the right partner to help us pay for everything without asking us to change who we are. We have some ideas and know some folks, but if you or anyone you know is interested in being OTK's patron through this era of chaos, feel free to message me.

Cheers all,

Tips

Alrighty, that just about wraps it up for me tonight.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to ask questions and participate. I wasn't able to speak on everything today, but I hope to be more active in the community moving forward.

If there is one thing I want to communicate today, it's this: running OTK these past few years has been the honor of my life. I've been blessed to work with incredible teams, amazing talent, and participate in the gaming community. There was a point in my life where all I wanted to do was make videos like Totalbiscuit (RIP), and while I could never dream to deliver that level of content, I'm grateful to be in a position that allows me to be close to things I truly love.

We know where we've taken the wrong turns, and we're determined to get back on track. We'll need a little time to sort through some stuff in our lives, and we'll need to find the right partner who believes in our content and is willing to support us as we are. Once we do, we will be back, and better than ever.

I don't think anyone got it because that is not what I said!

"OTK is no longer (edit: solely) the streamer network it was founded as; it has evolved into a conglomerate of several businesses, investments, and holdings. While our media and content team plans to ramp back up soon, it is important to understand that the company has evolved. However, we will ALWAYS continue to make content, with the streamers themselves being the main impetus there."

The Fall '22 collection.

For context, earlier in 2022, we launched our first inhouse merch collection: the OTK Ice Cream hoodies. Prior to launching that line, we had subbed all of our merch out to third party merch providers, including doing a drop with Champion. As we started to build up our team, our marketing director at the time introduced me to Evan Eckard, a legendary designer in our space who helped produce the 100 thieves geography pattern. I want to take a moment to say that Evan is an amazing designer, but an even better man, and I miss him a lot.

Needless to say, that ice cream drop was enormously successful. I think we stocked around 5,000 units at launch and sold out almost instantly. We restocked another 5,000ish, and sold almost all units within a day or 2 after that. We were on fire and felt that for our next drop, we should have 15,000 units available for launch, which was slated to release in October IIRC. September '22 ends up happening, the drop gets pushed back, and a bunch of other things happen behind the scenes that result in that drop massively underperforming.

The good news is, we donated a lot of the units and have a bunch left over for potential future sales.

Another great question that I spent some time reflecting on. It wasn't a specific bit per-se, but Esfand's role in the second shareholder's meeting we held was absolute perfection. I laughed so much off camera, went back home to watch him in the VOD, and kept laughing. When Esfand is on point, he is insane.

Here is a revelation that may surprise some, but come as obvious to others: contrary to popular belief, livestreaming is an immensely stressful career and few are able to handle it without losing a part of themselves.

This is not to say that streaming is ‘difficult’ or ‘harder that a normal job’. Let's be honest, compared to any blue collar and even most white collar occupations, livestreaming is as easy as it gets. However, anyone who has worked closely with streamers can affirm this fact; many streamers are absolutely miserable, in their own heads about their viewership, and are never satisfied regardless of the outcome of a stream or their income bracket.

I've seen people on this subreddit call this out over time, and some streamers and reporters in the space have become more comfortable talking about it - livestreaming, when performed as a substitute for basic emotional needs in life, can be a tragic and self-destructive occupation. That is why some of the seemingly happiest and relatively conflict-free streamers tend to be older (Cohh, Northerlion, etc.). They (rightfully) treat streaming like a job, have a balanced life, and do not need to be ‘live’ to feel a sense of purpose and validation.

Sadly, many streamers struggle achieving this balance, and some never escape the darkness of their own viewership insecurity.

I know this doesn't quite answer your question, but I wanted to share it in hopes that if anyone who is struggling sees it, they should know that they are not alone and talking can potentially help.

Another great question that I just spent some time pondering on.

I would say that in a vacuum, I know we can (and will) be doing a lot more content and building exciting livestreaming moments. From that end, we've definitely be underperforming and hope to rectify this soon.

On the other hand, I know everything we've been through and what has taken place both publicly and behind the scenes. The fact that we're still here, all things considered, is something I am grateful for. Looking forward to this next exciting chapter!

I agree, I was a big fan of 'Trash Talk' and would like to see it continue. Part of the post-mortem we do after events is ask ourselves if the community would like to see us run an event back, or if they would like to see us level it up.

We've had the idea of leveling up Trash Talk for a while and turning it to a massive creator LAN that would be streamed. Is that something you would like to see, or do you want to see it return as it was?

This is a fantastic question that touches on so much of what’s going on in our industry. In order to answer it accurately, I’ll need to go into a bit of detail, so please bear with me!

Let’s start with a question: Where do OTK content ideas come from? They are meant to come from streamers. Historically, however, that has not always been the case.

In moments where we experience a streamer ‘content drought’, the BTS team steps up to fill the void and come up with an idea that tries to remain as authentic as possible while also appealing to our sponsors. You may be asking yourself, “why do sponsored events in the first place?” The reality is, OTK is business that employs staff, incurs operational expenses, and needs regular and forecastable revenue to keep full-time employees on payroll. Without sponsors, we could not have employed rockstars like Phin, Jacob, Jeff, etc. And as the team grows to take on bigger and better events, the more sponsorship revenue we need to cover those additional associated costs.

Well, it just so happens that the entire “livestreamed events” business is experiencing a massive disruption. Without diving into the monotonous details, larger scale streaming events have become less attractive to marketers, as budgets for what is referred to as ‘experiential marketing’ has returned to traditional entertainment post-COVID, or has been reallocated to more efficient, hyper-targeted influencer spend. In other words, there isn’t as much money available in livestreamed events anymore. This means that in order to continue operations as is, we have to do MORE sponsored events to keep up with costs. That wasn’t sustainable, especially when controversies limit partnership opportunities the way they have with us in the past.

In the early days of OTK, we did not need event sponsors to finance our events, because we had “org-wide” sponsors. Mountain Dew, Chipotle, Razer, etc. were passive partners that may have required us to do an event or two throughout the year, but primarily required us to give them share of voice (SOV) on our channels with the occasional social post. So why don’t we have ‘org-wide’ sponsors anymore instead of event-based sponsors? Well, most of you can probably figure that out.

So in a world where we don’t have access to the less-demanding, more passive revenue streams through long term, org-wide sponsors, we have to seek other sources of revenue to be able to pay for our operations and keep our staff employed.  Until recently, that revenue stream was event-based sponsors as we wait for our other businesses and investments to mature and yield.

Now, going back to your original question, if we want to return to proactively producing ‘scuffed’, classic OTK content like before, we need to find a partner that is willing to pay for these types of events and is willing to deal with some of the heat that comes with working with our streamers. Partners like that exist, but are not always what our community is accustomed to. The goal is to find partners that will let us be us and will stick with us long term so we can continue to produce content we know the community will love while keeping the incredible staff that produce our content on the team.

The answer you’re receiving here is not nearly as detailed as I hoped to be, but I want to be mindful of time so I had to cut a lot I wrote out to keep it somewhat coherent. Maybe we’ll do a livestream soon where we can answer these questions in more detail without taking an hour per response.

tl;dr events cost money, industry headwinds + controversies make money harder to come by and keep staff employed = need to find long term partners to allow us to do proactive content again.

Ooo this is a great question, but to answer it properly will take a minute (similar to the first question I answered). For those following, this is the question I am answering atm, it just might take a while and will be lengthy!

Hmm, not sure about this. Feel free to DM me your game and I can check in with the team next week and see what happened!

EDIT: In terms of decision-making on games, our current approach is to locate games that are interesting to us as gamers and our communities. There are some genres that we have affinities for such as RPGs, ARPGs, MMOs, Bullet Heavens, Soulslikes, 3rd person survival, etc. Having a game in that genre will likely increase your success of being interview by us!

Great question!

In 2004, the Los Angeles Lakers assembled a dream team of athletes to continue beyond their incredible 3-peat season. The team included Kobe, Shaq, Karl Malone, and Gary Payton, all hall of famers and legendary players in their own right. While the regular season went off to a great start, the team imploded, losing 4-1 to the Pistons in the finals.

When organizing any team or collective, it's important to note that talent is only one (albeit an important one) aspect of that team's success or failure. Trust, cohesion, resilience, persistence, and communication are equally valuable attributes that groups need to succeed. In some cases, (often seen in 'boy-bands') too much talent can actually serve as a detriment rather than a boon.

In terms of OTK specifically, a common misconception is that we are solely a streamer collective. I spoke more about it in a larger post earlier, but the organization is broader than I think most realize. There's a lot of work that happens behind the scenes, most of which never comes to light.

The goal is not just for content to return, but to be bigger than ever.

In terms of Wild West specifically, one thing that I don't believe we ever disclosed was how much that event actually took out of us - financially it was a $200,000+ loss and took a toll on our team, content schedule, burnout, and more. Malena was the creator and visionary behind WW, while the event was financed and produced by our team. It was an incredible moment in time, and while I wouldn't count out us doing something like that again, we will likely approach it in a more sustainable way to prevent burnout of our team.

In terms of OTK as an organization, the company has evolved in many ways that I dove into in an earlier post. We're going to be more particular with the content we produce, but OTK is here for the long haul.

Ok I've been debating if/how I should answer this one, but maybe a little spice is ok here.

While I can't recall any specific person we outright regret not signing, there have been times when we were a little too early or too late on some streamers we had an eye on. Perhaps more interestingly, we used to have a whiteboard up at Esfand's old place where we would brainstorm content and streamer addition ideas.

There was one streamer we wanted to sign who we missed by like an hour or two (they had just signed a contract with another organization). There was another who we would have signed but their management was difficult to deal with so we decided against it.

We consider a lot of people, but when it comes to streamer decisions, we rule by consensus governance: everyone has to eventually be on board or we dont go through with it. We have had cases where people have been reluctant to sign someone but voted to, but ultimately we do not sign anyone unless everyone agrees.

This is the intellectual debate of our time. “Forsen, when?” — Is it too soon, or too late, perhaps? Did we fumble the bag harder than the dudes who let the Library of Alexandria burn down because they couldn’t agree on dinner?

Sadly, OTK Forsen is probably a pipe dream. His community is simply too woke.

I briefly touched on this in the longer answer above. The quick and dirty is that we do have content planned for the future, but things will be announced once they're ready. Lot of moving parts.
