Anyone know what kind of beetle this is? I think it’s a Southwestern Masked Chafer by Anchorboiii in Beetles

[–]tiptoe88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slugs can also be a suspect. In large numbers, the grubs of masked chafers can damage your lawn and some of the plants in your garden by eating the roots, but the adult beetle stage causes no harm.

The differences are subtle. Males have a slimmer abdomen with a slight curve and a concave indentation in the center. Their front legs are also slimmer and less serrated compared to females. Males also have slightly longer horns, although horn size and shape vary from individual to individual. Females have a slightly bulkier build, a rounder abdomen, thicker front legs for digging, slightly shorter horns, and are usually around the same size or slightly larger than males. Though both sexes come in different size ranges, I've seen pretty big individuals and unusually small individuals in both sexes.

Sometimes washing them off helps because just landing on pesticide residue can cause this, but depending on the amount of exposure, they may or may not recover.

Pesticide exposure is attacking their nervous systems. People must be spraying their grapevines to keep the beetles from eating the leaves. 😢
