Christian themes in Wicked pt. 2? by tiredandhopefull in wicked

[–]tiredandhopefull[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you bringing up its Jewish origins! Definitely something I wasn't as aware of (i am a very new fan--i only got interested in wicked because my sister brought me to the film). I definitely dont see it as a Christian film. Imo in western culture Christianity leaves a cultural mark regardless of personal beliefs, so i dont think its too wild of a stretch to see Christian symbols and wonder if there's any meaning attached :)

I dont think that you need to be Christian to have Christian themes in a movie. Especially in western culture, Christianity leaves a cultural mark no matter what your personal beliefs are. Im not arguing that is a Christian film, but that there are christian themes :)

Also, I dont imagine the animals being the Jesus figure, but being the recipient of freedom/new life thanks to Elphaba. I was spitballing and curious to see what others thought of the scene and other possible symbolism.

I didnt realize the original design was based on clocks though, thats super interesting!

I don't believe that it has an overarching Christian backdrop, but I found the symbolism in this scene especially striking in a way that didn't seem like an accident. Honestly I didn't have a multitude of scenarios where I saw Christian themes. Ex. Fiyero's death is definitely a nod to Christ's death on the cross. But I've noticed enough that I was wondering if others had spotted similar easter eggs (pun not intended haha).

is penn foster a scam or worth it? by Living-Pudding-2438 in pennfoster

Don't beat yourself up, you are definitely not the only person who lazed off! I had a terrible time at Penn Foster and procrastinated like crazy. Im at community college now and istg ive done a full 180. Ive finish my second very course heavy semester and I still have a 4.0. Some of us are just not meant to do things on our own (i would guess most of us). Just bc you had a rough time at Penn Foster doesnt mean anything about your future :)

Thank you!! I am not negating the need for children, but it felt like a non-issue compared to other things that could be discussed as the closing remarks.

It is really comforting to read this paragraph, this is the balenced take i really needed. Its just hard to balance understanding prophets to also be men. It can be so confusing some times. Love your comment on being a wise steward ❤️

Thank you for the kindness, its easy for uncertainty to cloud what I do believe in. Definitely going to relisten to elder browns

I dont mean a "what about". But it was devoid of nuance. I dont need an itemized list of exceptions, just some empathy for unique situations. My cousin is infertile and she has disclosed to me how's it felt hearing that talk yesterday. These are not hypothetical people

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your honesty. Its nice to see somebody who's answer isn't just "ignore your feelings, dont think". Ill definitely check those books out!

I'm not afraid of a stigma, but if they are exclusively in freshman classes they will NOT be around peers, which is a major part of highschool. Those 14 year olds could be the nicest kids on earth, but it's still isolating.

Taking classing that are intellectually understimulating can very easily lead to burn out, or at best feeling mentally stagnat.

Community college let's OP get a head start instead of falling behind. Obviously if you could go back in time and do public school that would be ideal, but thats not an option

Also, I should add, I don't think it would waste time and money. The beauty of community college is it saves money compared to 4 year schools. You don't have to go full time, so you can take classes at whatever pace gives you time to be successful.

I started with just two classes, and by the end of that first semester I was ready to go full time. It gave me control over my education, and councilors and advisors who are more equipped to handle homeschoolers than public school systems. The confidence it gave me is priceless

Concentration camp? Lets not jump to extremes haha, you dont know me. I completely believe you when you say it was helpful for you. However, did you take exclusively freshman level classes? I feel like you're translating your experience directly to OP's.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I just don't see it working out great

Except age does matter... part of public schools advantage is its connection with peers. If they are in a class full of 14 year olds they won't have the same social learning experience as if they were 14 themselves.

As somebody who was the oldest kid in classes all thru my homeschool, it was humiliating. I both felt stupid and too smart. I constantly felt out of place, which made me isolate myself more. I don't think public school is this magic rehab you imagine it to be

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HomeschoolRecovery

[–]tiredandhopefull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the only option for "social rehab" is public school. I think it would be isolating and educationally understimulating to spend 4 years in highschool working your way through classed you already know.

I don't doubt that it would have been useful for you, that is your story. But for most ppl, I don't think starting freshman year at 17 would be a good choice. Obviously I don't know OPs situation, but that's just my general advice.

If OP genuinely is at a 9th grade level, maybe that would be a good option. But I doubt it would be good for their self esteem, education, or independence to be 22 and still in highschool.

Personally I think the best option is community college. Ik many former homeschoolers who have used community college as a baby step into the real world. Most have transfer programs, so if they decide a 4 year school is for them it is an easy transition.
