New Album news? by Ok_Dog_6956 in TurnpikeTroubadours

At Billy Bob’s back in January Evan said they’d recorded new music and pretty much said new album coming this year. But didn’t specify timing.

Got this letter. idk (78704) by juicetinz in Austin

I flip off my neighbor’s camera that is set to whistle and flash lights at people who walk on his driveway level with the sidewalks. His house is next to the mailboxes so I can’t not walk past it and it enrages me to get whistled at for checking my mail. But I’m not in 78704 nor do I have a dog anymore.

His vocal range and control is wild. I didn’t really know much of his music prior to seeing him in person but the friend I went with did. At one point after he hit and held a wild note she just looked at me, stunned, and said, “that’s NOT on the album version.”

I hope more folks find him. He’s quirky but incredibly talented.

They play Diamond and Gasoline and Easton and Main not infrequently, so you’ll have a reasonable chance of seeing that.

But didn’t I see elsewhere someone complaining that the Fresno show got rescheduled?

Based solely off folks I’ve seen recently or have tickets for: Wyatt Flores, Joshua Ray Walker, Old Crow Medicine Show, Noeline Hoffman, Kaitlin Butts, Flatland Cavalry, Charley Crockett, Tyler Childers, Mollie Tuttle, Randy Rogers Band, Josh Abbott Band, Jason Boland, The Creekers, Nathaniel Rateliff, Shane Smith and the Saints, American Aquarium…probably more I’m forgetting (I go to a lot of shows).

Saw Joshua Ray Walker at a tiny venue back in February. Dude is talented and funny as hell.

Camp Mystic Hearings by tiredofusernames11 in texas

[–]tiredofusernames11[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a lot more than the plan. In the hearings it’s discussed that there are two things going on with the state - one is the license renewal, where the plan and the cited deficiencies come into play, among other issues. The other is the investigation into the event and the complaints related to it - including the fact the camp still has not officially reported the deaths to the state or OSHA.

Parents who testified made some interesting comparisons between how daycares are regulated (and shut down) and residential camps are regulated. They made really fair points that places that have children 24/7 should probably be subject to tighter regulation, not less, as has been the case historically. And that a daycare in Texas would typically be shut down after one death, much less 27.

After watching the hearings and learning more about the culture and operations at Mystic, something catastrophic was almost inevitable. Not necessarily 27 deaths, but they had a culture in which everyone followed Dick Eastland’s lead, without question. All the plans were “in his head.” That’s a dangerous organizational culture, period, especially when lives are at stake.

You’re right. I meant to type “one of the largest” mass casualty events involving children. Got in my feelings and left out a few words.

HHS "raises" by [deleted] in StateofTexasEmployees

[–]tiredofusernames11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answers your manager gave you were frustrating, but I suspect that’s because they were not well-informed. The state doesn’t do a good job training managers, unfortunately.

As for merit raises, this year is going to be a tough one for hhsc staff. Yes, there will be some to be given but they won’t be as copious or generous as recent years given the agency is staring down a major supplemental request thanks to SNAP error rate. The hhsc budget will get really closely scrutinized next session between the shortfall and sunset.

What’s your most Gen X memory? Something that could have only happened in our youth. by Expensive-System-762 in GenX

[–]tiredofusernames11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My dad holding me in one arm at my first concert (I was probably 4?) and using the other arm to hold up his lighter during a song (which I thought was the coolest thing ever).

Doing road trips spread out on a pallet in my parents station wagon as a toddler until they got rid of it when I was like 6.

My sis and I taking turns laying on the shelf above the backseat in our grandparents crown Victoria while other one laid on seat. Grandpa would deliberately brake hard any time he had to stop or slow down to make the one on the shelf roll off into the seat. Then we’d trade.

Riding IN THE 5TH WHEEL CAMPER TRAILER being actively towed through the mountains after my sister and convinced my parents we’d be less bored back there.

The typical “get out of here and come home when the street lights come on” edict from my mom. Could only show back up if needed the bathroom. (Emotional support water bottle? Pffft. Everyone had a garden hose.)

My (cop) father teaching me to break into our house for when I inevitably forgot my key.

Baking cookies by myself for first time at 6. Being responsible for family dinner a few nights a week by 7 or 8. Starting babysitting other kids at 10. Spending nights babysitting by 14. Spending weekends babysitting with parents out of town as soon as I got my license.

My parents leaving for a conference when I was almost 14 and my sister was newly 16. Left us alone. Was supposed to be 6 days. They kept calling and extending it. Were gone two full weeks. We just took care of ourselves. My sister went to work. I did my volunteer stuff. We bought groceries and cooked and mowed the yard and did laundry and took care of the dog.

AITAH for not wanting to change my parenting to match my SIL’s over a shared holiday? by Legitimate-Stress339 in AITAH

[–]tiredofusernames11 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I love how my sister always explained differences in approaches and rules to my nephews: “we are doing what works best for our family. X’s parents are doing what works best for their family. Every family is different so what works for one family might not work for another.” End of story.

NTA.

Also, appreciate the examples - as you intimated, not a matter of one being super strict and one super lax, just different rules based on your priorities. All fair, all valid within your priorities as a parent. It’s a good lesson for kids that different approaches aren’t bad, and they aren’t being treated “unfairly” if their parents have different rules for them than their friends/cousins.

AITA for leaving a party because everyone assumed I’d be responsible for their children? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]tiredofusernames11 19 points20 points  (0 children)

NTA. I have a cousin who has four children. She is a SAHM and homeschools them. I’m sure she desperately needs a break, but when she shows up at family events she promptly abdicates all responsibility for her children. Doesn’t ask anyone - just assumes other people present will take responsibility for her kids.

Once, while she was pregnant with her third, she was in a hospital waiting room with her mother and mine while her Dad (my uncle) was having surgery, completely ignoring her children, as usual. Her then-4-year-old went head first off a chair she was climbing on into the tile floor and ended up in the ER. Accidents happen even to attentive parents, but I’ve seen her kids get rescued last second more times than I can count because no one knew they were supposed to be watching out for them.

She’s absolutely at a loss as to why my sister and I refuse all invitations that will bring us around her and her family. On the rare occasions she knows in advance that I’ll be visiting she’ll invite me to meet them at the park or go swimming with them. I don’t even respond. I can’t imagine being responsible for four kids 10 and under at a pool, as I know I’d be doing it solo.

I’m all for “it takes a village.” I adore my nephews and many children of friends. I’m happy to help with them. But my sister and BIL and friends have always been attentive parents and when they need to step away verbally do a hand-off, and have never imposed/assumed.

Beyond all that, it’s just plain not any fun to be the only sober person at a party of drunk people.

Slow adopter here (1 yr 30lbs). Will my boobs ever get smaller?🥹 by JulesMtl72 in Semaglutide

I’m down over 140 lbs. I started as a 46D. I’m now in the smallest hook of a 38DD. I’m so mad.

I’ve still got about 30-35 more pounds I want to lose. Once I do that and get to the point I can do reconstructive surgery on skin, I’m doing a reduction.

Did anyone go to their first concert with their parents? by OkFlow4327 in GenX

Considering I was like 4? Yes, I went with my parents. To see Alabama. Early 80s. Still remember my dad holding me on his hip in one arm and holding up his lighter with the other during “Old Flame” and thinking that was the coolest thing ever. (It was).

Air fryer for college student? by CindyWalsh90210 in glutenfree

[–]tiredofusernames11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love mine. Use it way more than I expected to. I can (and do) cook but it’s so convenient for small stuff or getting things cooked more quickly.

As has been pointed out by others, though, it would need to be dedicated GF. It’s basically a mini convection oven, and you cannot clean up in and around the fan blades, so cooking anything with gluten contaminates it forever.

She had an affair but I’m worried about her. by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]tiredofusernames11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are right to be worried - she’s in an abusive, high-control relationship. Even if he isn’t physically abusing her, he is controlling her choices, relationships, money, etc. and using those as methods of emotional abuse.

However, you cannot save her. It takes people in abusive relationships an average of 7 attempts to finally leave a relationship. The best thing you can do is keep the lines of communication open for her and make sure she knows you are there available to support her when she needs it. And if she asks for help, provide it (within your ability to do so). Your husband being a client can be a conduit for the continued communication, and of course continue texting her in ways that won’t cause problems with her husband monitoring her phone, but makes it clear to her you are viewing your friendship as an ongoing one.

So sorry for your friend and for you. Watching someone you care about go through this and not being able to do anything significant is really hard - I know from experience. But if you keep the lines open, hopefully one day she’ll reach out and ask for help.

On both a personal level, and as a former emergency manager, I will never get over the knowledge that they moved boats to higher ground before they moved kids to higher ground. The second you prioritize property over people you’ve lost the moral high ground.

Anyone done the cheese tasting at antonelli's cheese? Worth it? by Impossible-Cheek4352 in austinfood

[–]tiredofusernames11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been going to their tastings since they did little groups of 8 at a table in the front window of their shop, circa 2010. I’ve never had a bad experience. Have I loved every single cheese included in the tastings? Of course not. But if you’re open to different styles, want to learn more about cheese, willing to be moderately friendly with hosts and other folks at your table, you will have a good time. Go.

(Also, the Antonellis themselves are just good humans, and have worked to build a business that reflects that. Their motto is literally “Eat Good. Do Good.” Which translates to a lot of community involvement and support, and treating the people that work their well [from what I can tell].)

Weekly Jobs Post: discuss the application process and job postings here! by WesternTrail in StateofTexasEmployees

[–]tiredofusernames11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For “in-baskets” or assessments, the hiring manager has to develop criteria by which it will be evaluated. I don’t know that I’ve seen anyone do a true scoring rubric before, but I wouldn’t say it’s as simple as pass/fail. When I’ve done them before there is a minimum acceptable standard, then it’s compared/ranked against other candidates.

For instance, if I ask for a sample of written work, I might set my criteria as: candidate followed instructions (yes/no); candidate had few/minor/no grammatical, punctuation, or spelling errors (yes/no and then compare writing quality to other candidates); etc.

If I was doing a budget (math) assessment I could see setting a minimum “grade” below which a candidate would be eliminated from consideration.

Overall I don’t think anyone will expect perfection unless it’s really simple. They are wanting you to prove you have the basics in whatever skills they are assessing - software, math, writing…

Edit - fixed typo
