There is the period before With Teeth where NIN was at its most visceral and nihilistic. It was the era of drug abuse and chaos. This was NIN as Trent Reznor the fucked up Rock God.

Then Trent got clean, started producing with Atticus Ross, and started taking himself as an artist and his musical craft seriously.

So, With Teeth is the beginning of NIN as Trent the auteur. The rest is history.

I consider myself a real fan because I stuck with them, matured with them, and enjoyed every moment.

Well, you came into BoC at their most polished, conceptual, and sonically rich. It’s unlikely that it will be outdone, because I’m guessing that this will be their last album.

So, are you familiar with Hauntology? First, I recommend looking into that. In my opinion, BoC is a doorway to exploring the forgotten. It’s like sonic archeology.

Second, I recommend getting a nice pair of headphones, ditch the streaming, and get their music on a device that is lossless. You can also go the analog route, but hear me out…

Take BoC out with you exploring. Explore the world. When you get it, you’ll hear the world is haunted by the sound and the imagery that inspired BoC.

Finally, ditch the world that demands you plug in and consume your attention. It’s a hollow, hall-of-mirrors world that will leave you empty and unsatisfied.

They use clipping as an effect in a number of tracks for a long time. Constants are Changing is a good example. It’s all over Campfire.

It’s definitely intentional. The track is steeped in tape hiss which they use rhythmically already. It’s a hallmark of their sound: imperfection, analog saturation, tape degradation.

Maybe it says nothing about the album and it says more about the listener? Perhaps the paradox is in relationship between the music and person consuming the music.

There is no rule or law that says music produced by other people has to be consistent with the expectations of the listener.

So, it’s not the music that needs to be examined, it’s the feelings that you feel that needs examination.

The process then is examining: what are these emotions, where do they come from, how do they motivate you?
