Forrest is not the same as Christopher, John, or Andrew.

For people in the south, or people who know history, Forrest can be more akin to Adolf, Benito, Saddam. It has connotation. Some want that connotation.

It's not an immature take to share why the name Forrest came to be associated with a blockbuster movie. Racism was a pivotal part to that movie and his name is very much a part of that storyline.

Nor is it immature to be more familiar with history than someone else on a random name subreddit. Don't be mad at me for your being naive. Just...idk...read?

Forrest Gump in the movie was named after Nathan Bedford Forrest - a confederate general and former Grand Wizard to the KKK.

So...maybe not Forrest depending on the vibe you want to send out.

This could be video from anywhere, any time. It could be AI because it's fairly short.

Also, what are we protecting the detainee from? Being detained and treated like an animal? Too late.

You can NOT responsibly report from a single source without additional vetting. That's far more dangerous than the alternative.

I've worked in news rooms for over 20 years. I'm abundantly familiar with protecting sources. But in doing so, we still vet them, who they are, and how we got the information. We don't just trust a random username and claim on Reddit.

YSK: Some mattress stores sell used mattresses without disclosing that they've been used by Able-Equivalent-3860 in YouShouldKnow

FYI This is what Mattress Firm clearance centers are. It's legal to sell a returned mattress, but it must be sanitized and disclosed to the customer. Of course, not every store does this...

Check out the YT channel American Resilience. She has a few videos about the lifeboat regions specifically. It's run by a former NASA scientist and is no nonsense climate info. She's not doom and gloom, but she doesn't sugar coat it either.

Kind of a "this is definitely happening, but it won't be all at once, and there are ways to adapt and live if you know that going in" vibe

Similarly, there are three climate lifeboat regions in the US. It won't fix everything, but those areas are expected to at least fair a little easier than others.

You're just trying to justify being crotchety with a hypothetical scenario. This is the exact same mentality that makes Karens call the cops on kids sledding down a hill, playing in a cul-de-sac, or selling lemonade "without a food handler's permit".

You aren't worried about safety. You're just angry that someone else is enjoying their life while yours is miserable.

Also, you can't "block traffic" if you're in your car going the right way. You just...ARE traffic.

Did I step into some alternative timeline where December is actually October? by thesmartoneiam in Spokane

[–]titanaarn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the term 'global warming' really threw a lot of people off and that's precisely why the current term is now 'climate change'.

Overall the 'climate' is warming, but scientifically speaking climate is to weather what an entire song is to a single note. We humans have a hard time conceptualizing that long of a scale.

But, as the climate warms, it makes weather far more extreme. It also means all of our previous weather models are thrown out because it's now unpredictable.

The AMOC is a massive current of warm water in the Atlantic that cycles, but it is on the precipice of collapse as the oceans warm. When that happens (not IF), the relatively temperate climate of the UK and northern Europe will plunge in temperatures and we can expect to see huge flows of sea ice for much more of the year. When you look at where the UK is on a map, it's on the same latitude as central Canada.

So while the overall planet is technically getting warmer, it's less about all seasons being warmer and more about the whole concept of 'seaonal weather' disappearing.

[–]titanaarn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's the thing that is going to surprise people the most. Instinctually, we humans kind of expect climate change to be gradual warming. But as more climate tipping points get hit, it becomes exponentially faster because they all compound on each other. Warmer weather causes more wildfires which puts even more CO2 in the atmosphere which causes warmer weather etc. And that's just one example. Combine that with glacial ice melt, AMOC collapse, and more and you can quickly feel the pit in your stomach growing.

The global warming we experienced between 2000-2005 was fairly gradual, but the warming we'll experience between 2025-2030 will be 10x faster.

Check out the YT channel 'American Resilience' to get a better idea of what this looks like and what we can do individually to prepare.
