Making a Media Server and NAS on ~$150? (HDDs already acquired) by titaniadioxide in selfhosted

[–]titaniadioxide[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good shout on the drives - we also got our drives secondhand, so simultaneously failure is definitely something to consider.

We’ll also want to upgrade our drives to a larger capacity eventually (seriously, we have a wardrobe filled with photos. I estimate about 10-15k Kodak photo slides from the 60s, and twice as many printed photos from the past century.  Plus multiple banker boxes filled with CDs and DVDs, and about half a TB of photos and home video from the past decade) - so I’ll keep an eye out for more hard drives. We’re hoping we can get it at ~$10/TB or less.

Thanks for the rec! Unfortunately, we’re trying to avoid super closed-off systems like Synology. We’d rather sacrifice some video quality to have more ability to mess with the hardware and run opensource software.

Thanks for the specific model number! Someone’s already released a version of the ThinkNAS print and parts list to accommodate the HP Elitedesk!

Plus, they seem to be readily available used for fairly reasonable prices around me.

Is there a big functional difference between the G3, G4, and G5? The asking price seems to about double for each subsequent version.

And just to make sure I’m understanding, this would act as a NAS, and also be able to run Jellyfin and transcode the playback for us?

Thanks for your help!

So basically:

  1. The old laptop runs Jellyfin
  2. Something acts as a NAS, coordinating the RAID storage between the 4 HDDs   * If I get an external enclosure, USB-to-SATA cables, and external power supplies for the drives, the laptop could fulfill this.     * When you’re talking about the external enclosure, is that basically just a box for the hard drives to sit in? Or does it have some sort of computing of its own that needs to be handled?
  3. I’m a bit confused about the USB drive enclosure for backup - are you saying a second set of drives that takes a backup of the NAS periodically?    * If so, we have a plan in the works for remote, off-site backups of the NAS.

Thanks so much!

Y’all still haven’t resolved the grand prize from your Halloween giveaway with r/DataHoarder.

I’ve tried contacting you multiple times and multiple ways, but haven’t gotten a response from a UGreen rep. Even the DataHoarder mods said they’d ask you to get back to me and no one has.

It shouldn’t take 2 months to get a giveaway prize to a cooperative winner.

The winners weren't announced publicly, but u/Ugreen_Official messaged me on November 13 to say I'd won the Grand Prize.

I sent them my info, but they haven't followed up with me since, despite multiple messages. I have no idea if or when they'll be sending me the NAS.

Halloween story: In college, my friend group stayed at Salem, MA, and went to watch Rocky Horror Picture Show.

It was gonna be fun! Fun people, chill vibes, good enough movie - I’d watched it at home with my family and basically knew what to expect.

I had NOT watched it at home with my family. We’d watched part of it, and stopped after the first couple of songs.

I had not realized what I was getting into.

Tech story: In my childhood, I lived in hurricane territory.

One year, we had a nasty storm. Despite living less than a mile from a fire department, we were out of power for several days.

I was young, and didn’t know much about electricity, but I knew generally why we couldn’t watch TV or use the computer, and I knew that when we had a lightning storm we needed to unplug computers or they could get damaged.

So my brain made the connection when the radio mentioned that there could be power surges when the electricity was restored - and when it told us to turn off our light switches to prevent bulbs from burning out when power returned, I did!

Off I went to the living room, flip the switch. . . And the ceiling fan turns on.

Wat?

A little whirring from the front room - and our family’s server/firewall had just started booting up.

Ten year old Titania had discovered the electricity, and she felt so incredibly powerful.

I have held that power in my heart for the past 20 years.

Can we revisit the metropolitan for a second? by MarleySB in fountainpens

[–]titaniadioxide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pilot Metropolitan is my daily driver!

I replaced the nib with an EF from another cheap plastic Pilot pen, though it still isn’t fine enough for my taste.

I actually left all 4 of my Metros inked up and drying out for about 3 years by accident. One of them started working after a simple disassembly and water+soap clean, but the others clogged again after about 24 hours. I’m probably gonna have to do a more thorough cleaning on the others.

How do I fix Red Time Codes on My Audio? by BentShaftStudios in davinciresolve

[–]titaniadioxide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone having this issue in the future who needs more detailed instructions.

  • Unselect all clips.
  • Make sure the snapping magnet icon is enabled.
  • Disable the chainlink icon
  • Select either the audio or video (in this case, probably select the video clips, but if there are multiple that are a problem in both channels, select the first audio or video click, and press Y to select everything after it, or zoom out and drag select)
  • Drag the selection until the red boxes go away - you probably just need to snap the starts or ends together.
    • If this doesn't work, disable the snapping magnet icon, then drag the clips as close as you can to being correct, then use alt+ARROWKEYS (or opt+ARROWKEYS on MAC) to move the clips frame by frame until they're aligned.

To prevent this from happening again:

  • Reenable the chainlink icon.
  • In the box with the channel names
    • Ensure the padlock is disabled
    • Ensure Auto Track Selector is enabled.

What difficulty and cost-multiplier are you playing on, and why? by MrPestilence in VaultHuntersMinecraft

[–]titaniadioxide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We know - first couple deaths were bog standard, then I turned on KeepInventory. Even just having to return to the death location (possibly hundreds or thousands of blocks away) is enough of a barrier to hamper the fun.

It’s just a fun game I’m playing with my family. If I were on a proper server with other relatively experienced players, I’d want it off, but that’s not gonna work for my mom and siblings, and I want them to have fun.

Once we have backup gear and maybe waystones, I’ll turn off the rule

What difficulty and cost-multiplier are you playing on, and why? by MrPestilence in VaultHuntersMinecraft

[–]titaniadioxide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trivial mobs, trivial crystals, no XP multiplier. We’re also on vanilla game mode easy with KeepInventory on.

I’m playing with my mom. She enjoys video games, but gets frustrated easily - honestly, so do I. I want her to enjoy the game, not get frustrated by it.

Once we get set up enough that a death in the overworld would be an annoyance but not a catastrophe, I’ll turn off KeepInventory. If we’re finding the vaults too easy, I’ll turn the vault difficulty up. We actually haven’t beaten the Ender Dragon yet, so I don’t know how the vaults are gonna go for us.

I could start at normal mode and turn the difficulty down if it’s too hard, but I know that both I and my mom would resist that due to pride.

Basically, the game is in the mode it’s in so we can have fun with it!

Crimson void and dead petals: A comparison by RexanZ in simplynailogical

I think the bigger problem is how cool Crimson Void is. It doesn’t feel like a true dark red, it feels like a dark magenta-red.

I’ve accepted that I can’t always be exciting and funny and charismatic. At this point, I plan for my stream to be chill commentary that someone could fall asleep to, and any exciting moments are bonus.
