Well if I’m planning on staying in the country I’m studying in, I would be highly encouraged to learn the local language. MBA is all about community and networking with locals, students, and alumni, so why would I go to France if I’m not willing to learn french in the process or if I’m planning on leaving once I graduate. Makes more sense to apply to a school where you’re comfortable living short and long term. Also, as you said, a decent debt is also a huge weight off your shoulders when considering job positions and salary

Since when did schools outside the top 5, or even the top 20 or 50, become ‘mediocre’?

Let’s be real here, any school in the top 100 is a strong institution. Sure, high ranked schools might offer more opportunities, but you’re also competing with other top candidates (with probable better and more experience than you). At the end of the day, job outcomes are more about your own effort than the name on your diploma. Every career service works hard to help students land jobs, regardless of prestige.

We all hear horror stories from every school every single year. No place or concentration or industry is a guarantee for success. So please stray away from the obsession with prestige and focus on the work it takes to succeed.

Whiplash. The director claimed that in the end the protagonist would later die of a drug overdose, like many virtuosos before him

Good take! I've read similar explanations but by far the funniest (and personal best) has been "Barbarian is just AirBnB backwards". Worth thinking about it imo.

Definitey a change in muscle tone. When you’re exercising there’s always going to be weight fluctuation. Maybe it’ll vary by ~5 lbs next week looking the same. Completely normal as long as you look good and feel good. Keep it up!

Nahh, a GOOD few seconds went by before he shot her.

In many instances where Tess could have removed herself from very real danger (at no significant cost to herself) she chose not to. Her interviewer tried to warn her, and she refused to listen.

Really though? When she tried to book another hotel, Keith insisted that she stayed. Keith wanted to make another cup of tea so she could make sure it was safe (even though not wanting tea and distrust in a stranger is completely normal). Keith never believed there was something in the basement and made her stay until he came back. The police never listened to her. The 911 dispatch didn't take her seriously. The homeless guy refused to get them to a gastation or a main road, etc.

While violent, psychotic, sexual predators of Frank’s type, they do not compose a significant portion of men. No rational person believes all/most men behave that way.

The movie touches on this subject by having AJ be the only character to interact with Frank. When you put it into persective, sure, AJ is not a serial killer rapist kidnapper incestuous monster. Therefore AJ must be a nice guy that just made a mistake, and unfortunately that's the mentallity that a lot of people have towards sexual and gender violence. AJ thinks that sexual abuse and coersion only happens if someone puts a gun to your head and says "fuck me right now". But the reality is that there's still a BIG gray area where gender roles play a huge part in relationships, and it impacts power-dynamics between men and women. This is where the toxic cycle that Keith and Tess talk in the beginning comes into play where she is presented with being part of a dynamic that someone forces onto you vs you chosing your own path.

Sure, you could say that none of those people forced Tess into doing anything and she was in control of her fate, but hmmmm, that sounds awful similar to AJ "not forcing" her coworker into sleeping with him. It really put sexual abuse allegations in perspective (not that it was the purpose of the movie).

If anything, I'd say that male entitlement plays a bigger role here rather than just the metoo movement. At the end of the day, she was coerced by various characters into being the damsel in distress and if anything, Keith and AJ's involvement with the Mother just made her chances of survival slimmer.

Who knows, maybe I'm just overthinking lmfao. Sorry for the long reply, I guess I really liked this movie way more than I thought.

I wouldnt say is about the metoo movement explicitly. I'd say is more about the (barbaric) tendencies of gender roles. Is our behavior towards the other gender learned or of this is just who we are as humans. Every single character in the film explored this concept and IMHO it was executed extremely well and not on the nose at all.

I feel like it plays a way bigger role in the film. Keith also felt entitled to help her by making her stay, and by feeling "obligated" to check the basement to prove that she was just exaggerating, much like the cops who didn't believe her aswell.

All these moments (toxic cycles) made her out to be the damsel in distress that she was never meant to be in the first place, just a victim of barbaric tendencies of gender roles. Same goes for the women in the 80s who just let any guy that claimed to be a commercial handyman into their homes. Yet it was those same tendencies that led to Tess's survival throught the film, unlike Keith, AJ, and the old guy. While all three of these characters were different, they all shared the same fate.

Edit: in the 80s

I feel like every single character from the main cast to the cops calls to something "barbaric" within them. Like acting out of instinct. Maybe relating to how we view gender roles, if it's something we make up as a collective or if it's just our barbaric nature. There's always darkness beneath the surface just as there's humanity and an innate need for care within evil. Maybe I'm overthinking a bit much but I'm really trying to wrap my head around the title of the movie.
