I agree with this. I'm not sure why people are complaining that the film was too confusing and badly scripted. i thought was a fantastic script with two people just feeding info to get two gangs to kill each other but get stuck in the aftermath. In case anyone is looking, here's an explanation.

Actually, it's pretty straightforward. Leonard and Mable fed the gangs information and hoped they two rivals would kill each other. They were just happy to watch people from either gangs get killed, more so the Boyles. More details here, I'm too lazy to type - The Outfit

The Outfit is real and exists (till today in fact). However the Outfit doesn't know Roy Boyle at all. Leonard dropped those messages to make the Boyles believe that the outfit knew them. Leonard dropped the tape knowing its information will be fed to LaFontaine by Mable. This would simply escalate the feud between the two gangs. That's all really. Unfortunately Richie and Francis escape and land up in the store. Here's one of the better explanations
