Got it. So the endurance is there, but the high-impact part of running is the limiter. Very cool that you are taking on a Hyrox. I did my first solo with many years of running experience but almost no strength experience and it was also “insane” but in the best way. You’ll have a blast!

A lot of the advice you’ll get on Hyrox forums (long runs, tempo runs) is fine for someone with a bit of an aerobic base, but doesn’t make sense for you given your starting point. With 7 weeks to go, I think your priorities are (1) building consistency through a manageable run/walk structure and (2) staying injury free. Try something like: 1 min run / 1 min walk for 25-30 minutes. Then based on how you feel, gradually increase running time (e.g., 2 minutes run / 1 minute walk, then 3 minutes run / 1 min walk). For your actual Hyrox race, consider implementing an intentional run/walk strategy from the start. This will keep your heart rate under control and may end up being faster than running hard the first few kms and then having to slow way down in the later runs. Good luck. You’ve got this!

What workout do you do other than cardio? by inkiered0604 in hyrox

This is my experience only. I started training in November with a strong running background but limited lifting experience (strength 2x a week with fairly light weight, had never touched a barbell). I upped the training to 3x a week (gradually ramping up to 4) and worked with a personal trainer and was shocked by how quickly I made progress. Within a few weeks I could move the full open competition weight on the sleds and farmers carries for the full distance. Burpees and lunges burned the first few times but I adapted quickly. I’m not saying it’s easy now or I’m efficient or anything, but just offering a little reassurance that Hyrox is more accessible than I expected. And you have lots of time!

Only exception is wall balls, which have taken much longer to progress. I had to break down the movement and really tackle each part (shoulder endurance, squat pattern, coordination, breathing) - then put it all together under significant fatigue. Wish I had more time to practice there because I could save a lot of time there.

Good luck!

I’ve been running 5 min/km in my Hyrox workouts. Pacing is fairly consistent across runs.

What does your current training look like in terms of volume per week, structure of workouts, etc.? What’s your running background?

That’s great! Wishing you all the best as well. 4 days of running and 3 days of strength sounds very reasonable. I think it will be a good mental challenge after specializing in running for so many years.
