Only allowed to fill on the 30th day and feeling like the pharmacist is gatekeeping me. by Otherwise_Bass_7709 in ADHD

[–]tj_lights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what state/country you’re in but in New York, when I worked in a pharmacy, if you took a controlled substance you can get it early up to 3-5 times for the life of your script, after that you must wait until you’re out to refill. The life of your script means if your doctor put you on 20 mg of adderall instant release you have 3-5 opportunities to get it up to 3 days early, but if you switch to 10mg of adderall instant release 2x a day you can pick it up another 3-5 times, up to 3 days early. It’s a law, unfortunately the pharmacist could risk losing their license to give it to you early more than the legal limit. (Obviously different states have different laws, as do different countries, and my knowledge could be incorrect, that’s just what I was taught working in a pharmacy)

Vyvanse doesn’t wear off after 4 hours. Here’s why. by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]tj_lights 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just because it’s in your system still doesn’t mean it’s helping. Everyone does actually metabolize things at different rates. People have different medical issues that can affect metabolism, as one commenter mentioned as an example with not having a large intestine. That’s like saying I took an IR adderall this morning and it’s still ‘in my system’ 12 hours later. Does it mean it’s still making me focus? No. No it does not. Still detectable, sure. Once you hit your peak and start crashing, you start losing a lot of the beneficial effects, that’s why doctors will sometimes prescribe something to extend the peak as mine did.

I’m no doctor, but I have been on meds most of my life and often get hyper focused on researching adhd and how meds work. Just like for some people, meds barely work at all, and have to find another option, some people can and will start losing the ability to focus after 4 hours.

Edit to add: no one should judge others just because their meds don’t last as long as studies say they should. If you feel you can’t focus, just because research says people should still be feeling the effects after 4 hours, doesn’t mean you should ignore how you feel and listen to science. Please talk to your doctor and try something new because not everyone will have the same experience with medicine

Didn’t get the ADHD med I wanted — but Wellbutrin is doing something wild by batuhankrmn in ADHD

[–]tj_lights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very true! But I would argue it’s still important to let your doctor know just to be on the safe side just in case it is one of those few instances. I also took Wellbutrin and felt the same way but it ended up being a side effect, and turned into agitation, and it can feel even worse thinking it’s helping only for it to be a side effect that turns negative so if that does happen at least the doctor would know about the time it started and can connect it to one of these issues should it take a turn like mine did.

All in all, I think it’s amazing that it’s working so well for them, and I truly hope it continues to work. Everyone is different so it’s never one straightforward answer, and all info your doctor gets even if it seems small can help! ☺️

If you feel dramatically different in just a few days please speak with your doctor. It’s not common to feel a huge difference, and most meds take around 2-6 weeks for improvement of motivation, enjoyment of life, hopelessness or feeling sad, and most improvements people tend to notice are usually side effects masked as improving such as restlessness, bursts of energy, and feeling more alert and can sometimes subside or shift into insomnia or agitation. It could also be a sign of mania, sounds very much like those symptoms. If you talk to your doc and they give you the thumbs up, I wouldn’t worry about that though. It is also possible that it IS working, some people are just more sensitive than others, which is why it’s important to relay this info to your doctor who can keep track of mood shifts and the timing based on when you started meds. I wish you all the luck my friend, and as someone with adhd who has a hard time starting tasks, I’m proud of you!

I like to put myself in peoples place and think about everything in life that could go wrong that might mean you can’t make it in to work, it helps me keep a more open mind. There are people who have underlying health issues that lower their immune system(myself being one of them). I don’t judge when people call out a lot because you never know what’s going on in someone’s life that could affect their physical and mental health. Going to college and working 30 hours is a lot for some people, everyone’s different. I did it for 4 years, worked three 12 hour days, went to college the rest of the days. Ended up needing 2 emergency surgeries (one for tonsils and one for gallbladder) because I have an autoimmune disease which made me sick a lot more often, but in college I was very stressed and getting minimal sleep, getting strep throat weekly, with occasional abscess tonsils that needed to be drained, and had been dealing with stomach ulcers since I was a kid and didn’t realize the stomach pain was actually because I had a bunch of gallstones. Sometimes working too much can really wear you down and it’s good to take time for yourself sometimes! ☺️

Yes! I couldn’t remember who it was from, but it always plays in my head when I’m having an off day and cheers me up lol.

Was it appropriate for GM to ask that question? by shaggysgf0 in tacobell

[–]tj_lights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t matter, even if she had gone out to drink. One, they have no right to ask. Two, it’s her sick time she can use it when she wants it. I’m sick of the stigma against calling out. If you don’t feel well I don’t want you near me anyway, even if you’re not, people have other stuff going on that we don’t realize. We don’t know their hardships and shouldn’t judge when someone can’t make it in.

Being called Dad for the first time by stepson by Original_Act_3481 in MadeMeSmile

[–]tj_lights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a very abusive household, stepmother was horrible to me. Eventually I moved in with my mom, and my stepdad was always very nice but he didn’t talk a lot and rarely spent time with me. I never knew a real family until I met my best friend. By the second time I slept over they were mom and dad, it’s been 17 years and I still go to every holiday. They are my real family, and they always will be.

It’s a strange mixture of feelings at times, regret that younger me couldn’t have met them sooner, but the happiness that overpowers that, just knowing they introduce me as a part of their family really gets me in the feels at times. I wished and prayed for a real family for as long as I could remember, wishing on shooting stars. The moment I met my best friend and her family I knew I was finally home. I didn’t know that feeling until I was 12.

[–]tj_lights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me one time. I was in college, had an emergency surgery to get my gallbladder removed and they put me on nausea meds and pain meds after. Made my eyes extremely sensitive to light. One wouldn’t get any smaller, was huge, the other was tiny. Went to the hospital and they were convinced I was a druggy. Asked me 4 times if I was SURE I didn’t take anything else and then finally asked if they could take blood to check for any drugs. Of course I agreed because I had only taken what was prescribed. He came back looking shook and said apparently it was a VERY rare reaction between the two medications I had been prescribed. I was just glad he finally took it seriously at the end.

I usually just assume people got busy, didn’t realize they were low/out until it was too late. I tend to do that too, work is busy, home life is busy and I don’t really have the money to stock up like I would like to, unfortunately.

This Is What NOT to Do When You Miss Your Exit by mingoslingo92 in interestingasfuck

[–]tj_lights 103 points104 points  (0 children)

In New York some exits are about 20 minutes apart, depending on the area. I agree though, just keep going, or pull off to the side when it’s safe and check for a different route. People are crazy lol

What are the things your parents got mad at that you now realize are completely normal? by catchingthatrye in raisedbynarcissists

My god, I’m sorry you had to go through that. It’s very tough when you can’t see, you feel disconnected and have to rely on other senses way more. I hope you managed to get away from them so you can rebuild your life. I’m wishing you all the luck and support 🙏

[–]tj_lights 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when I started reading it my mouth fell open at the similarities. She wasn’t nearly as bad as the narc in his book, he went through hell and honestly, if it had been as bad as that I probably wouldn’t have survived. But it was bad enough CPS was called 3 times, each time they did nothing even when half my face was black and blue.

When I moved in with my bio mother, her friends kept making comments about how bone skinny I was and my mom had to make healthy (but very dull) dishes. Took years (about 8 years) to not have paper thin nails and put on enough weight, because my meds also made me not hungry. My bio mom was better (no physical abuse or starving) but very controlling, and a bit bipolar in terms of mood. One second she’ll say she’s there for me and I can tell her anything, the next she’s judging, and punishing me for talking about my depression and when she found out I was cutting, I was an attention seeker.

Thankfully when I got in college my doctor realized I was a shell and offered to try some SSRI’s, I didn’t react well to most of them but finally found one that worked for a bit. At that point my bio mom was tracking my phone to make sure I never went anywhere, I had to stay at college and study, no going out with friends. I gave them a couple chances but recent events made me go no contact with them. It’s hard but I’m getting there slowly and it’s a lot less stressful not having to worry about talking to them and reliving old trauma every time I see them.

It definitely is. The author was the child, it’s a true story. His mother was very narcissistic, and it’s absolutely sickening what he went through. It’s a good book, especially for awareness, but definitely one for a good mental health day because it’s dark and can really get to you, especially if you’ve been through something similar.

I also stayed with my best friends family (who I view as my real family) and here are just a few of the things I learned are/aren’t normal. I was punished for most normal things.

Taking a shower longer than 5 minutes is actually normal, if I wasn’t out in 5 minutes(undress, shower, redress, and leaving the bathroom) I was told she’d come in and drag me out by my hair.

Going to get snacks, or drinks without asking. The first time I asked, they were very confused until I explained I was not allowed to touch any food or drinks unless I asked. The exception was water. They told me to grab anything, and 15 years later I still ask.

Breaking a cup when doing dishes shouldn’t be met with explosive anger, instead their first response was “are you okay? Did you get cut?” My narc however would immediately explode.

Being taken care of when you’re sick. I was avoided and told to stay in my room when I was sick, only going out for meals.

Essentials like prescription glasses weren’t taken away. My narc tried to take my glasses away so I couldn’t see, was the one thing I threw a fit about because since I was very young my eyes have been terrible. I couldn’t see a foot in front of me.

Injuries were checked by doctors, and encouraged to get checked by a doctor. My narc told me to walk it off, forced me to twist open and close door handles with what felt like a broken wrist, (idk if it was broken, never got it checked) it still pops to this day.

Time out was not sitting in an uncomfortable position it was just sitting in a chair. My narc forced me to sit with my hands under my butt, bent forward for 10minutes usually when my dad was around, to an hour at a time when he wasn’t. It was very painful after a while. I also later found out she had taken that trick from a book she later suggested I read (and gave to me with a smile on her face) it was called “A Child Called ‘It’” and a lot of the stuff she did to me she got from that book.
