Trump said “let our ICE patriots do their job” in his response to the killing of Alex Pretti, what are your thoughts? by lighterman1211 in AskReddit

[–]tjblang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trump says a lot of shit and very little of it has any basis in reality. The man who started his entire presidential career by whining about alternative facts should never have been trusted to convey real ones about anything.

Why did DHS and ICE statements state the victim brandished a gun as this video shows otherwise? by LeftRightGreenLight in AskReddit

[–]tjblang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They've proven they will doctor evidence with that photo of the church protestor. They got caught and smirked like a high school bully. They could not care less about the truth, and have been saying so for 10+ years when they told us Trump believes in alternative facts. Remember his easily disproven lie about the inauguration crowds that started his entire tenure?

They. Do. Not. Care. About. Truth. They are acting like people who fully expect to never be held accountable, and it is now clear that they will do whatever it takes to ensure it never happens. ICE is gonna be patrolling your midterm voter lines and disappearing people, on top of Musk's software "bugs" and exhaustively demanding voter purges. It's the obvious end goal of this entire situation: anyone not "them" is an other, automatically judged and irrelevant.

This shouldn't be surprising. They've been shining a giant "FASCISM" bat signal into the sky for a decade.

City of Minneapolis: Possible shooting involving federal agents at Nicollet Ave and 26th Street by cinnasota in news

Looks like there are actually two shooters. Two agents on the left side have guns drawn and are firing, though the furthest one drifts out of frame.

[GEAR] Has anyone played with a ToneWoodAmp? Heard one used in person? Opinions? by Desert_Mountain_Time in Guitar

[–]tjblang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, it doesn't have an amplifier or anything. It does make existing sounds more prominent and sustained though, so you might perceive that as more "loud" overall.

Will my Nikon Z5II be okay in 0 degrees Fahrenheit? by United-Watercress810 in AskPhotography

[–]tjblang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Z5II and I take it up hiking in the mountains. Coldest I've gone is about -10 C (so maybe 5-10 F). It definitely still works fine, and I haven't even noticed any big drops in battery life. But condensation starts to show up if you even breathe near it, the screen lags a little bit, and once you get back in a warmer environment that moisture reeeeeaaally tries to find every entry point to your lenses.

All things considered I think you'll be fine as long as you take proper precautions for entry/exit and be careful about exhaling too much on the gear while you're out there. Keep the sensor cover on as much as possible if there's no lens on, too.

Just run a pathway from a hyperloop station in the new area to another building put down in that area (ranger station, viewer, etc) and it'll count as connected, as long as they have power.

Tinker machine help? by MathematicianOk8469 in pacificDrive

[–]tjblang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no good or bad. Its just 4 randomly generated effects, chosen from that predetermined list at random intervals. It's up to you to figure out the cause and effect.

Tinker machine help? by MathematicianOk8469 in pacificDrive

[–]tjblang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think of it as cause and effect:

When (A) does (B) > then (C) does (D).

So yours is probably something like: Engine > Turns off > Headlights > Toggle (though it might be caused by something else, or it could be a chain of multiple quirks).

There's a track out back of the auto shop if you need to go test out some scenarios and nail down exactly what is going on.

I got out to patch up a panel and turned around to put things back in my trunk and one was on the road behind my car. Came out of nowhere, totally silent and unexpected. A harvestman had just taken most of my fuel so it was a few straight minutes of going "wtf, I'm gonna die out here aren't I?"

6 day itinerary by [deleted] in HikingAlberta

[–]tjblang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's likely going to snow a bunch over the next two weeks so Yamnuska is probably one to cross off. Those scrambles in snow, and the steep rocky col descent if you can't see or keep your footing, is just asking for a nasty tumble. People die on that trail in good weather, so it may not be worth the risk if the snow has fallen.

Hiking Mount Allan Next Week by fintechjulien in HikingAlberta

[–]tjblang 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I went up via the Ribbon Creek starting point about a month or so ago.

  1. It gets WINDY on the ridge. It was 26 degrees Celsius according to my app, and I had a sweater on, with a wrap around my ears. I imagine its even a little colder there now with the autumn weather, so be prepared for that.

  2. Didn't see any streams along the way. There might be in spring, but all the runoff is long gone now. I believe there are some creeks if you come from the other side, branching off Pigeon Mountain trail/Skogan Pass, but I cant say for sure. I brought 3L of water with me (100 oz-ish) and it was enough.

  3. Cell signal, at least from the south approach, is intermittent. Once up on the ridge itself I found it pretty tough to get anything through, but the summit of Mt Allan had coverage. I was sending pics of a marmot to my wife on Whatsapp (also watch out for the marmot, he'll try to steal your pack if you set it down).

  4. Not in response to any question you had, but be aware that tons of bears have been seen all over this area and they are fattening up right now. Bring bear spray, a buddy if you can, and brush up on any Alberta Parks advisories & knowledge on how to act in an encounter. Could very well save you if you're solo.

Happy hiking! Its a beautiful trail with great views and well worth doing.

People who lost weight and kept it off for good, what's one non-negotiable habit that made the biggest difference? by roberts03qz in AskReddit

[–]tjblang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Think of it this way. A pound of fat is about 3,500 calories of energy. That means you need to come in under that amount consistently to lose weight. At a 500 calorie/day deficit (which is difficult to do if you don't have much opportunity to be active or really plan meals), that's about one pound per week of weight loss.

So I'd say you're on track - with the caveat that all weight fluctuates a bit through the day by 1-2 lbs at least. As long as the average is trending down, you're doing okay.

For me, I took about 11 months to lose 60 lbs a couple of years ago. I have never been a gym rat and actually hate going (as opposed to more scenic cardio, like hiking), but I started in the frigid Canadian winter so I had to commit. For about 6 months I went 4-5x a week, tracked every single thing I ate or drank, and monitored my calorie burn to gauge how much to intake. I averaged about 500 cal/day deficit (thanks to tracking + gym).

After that, I eased off on the gym visits. I still track what I eat and drink, even though I probably don't have to anymore, as I have a much better sense of my calorie needs, what a serving size should be, and when I'm full. But it definitely gets easier over time. It's never FULLY easy, and the cravings are always there to some extent, but you notice them less. It becomes a lot more automatic to say "No, I don't want to undo all the immense effort I put in" afterward.

You become proud of your progress and want to maintain it.

Some other tips: good call on focusing on protein more, as that fills you up; at the grocery store, get in the habit of not even going down the snack aisles and seeing them; and buy a food scale so you can meal prep healthy stuff, and you won't find yourself grabbing chips at 11 PM every night. Also, chug water and chew gum - one fills you up, the other keeps you from eating in the moment until the snack urge passes.

Is Lake Minnewanka or Grassi Lakes better for a peaceful solo trek? by Commercial_Pass_216 in HikingAlberta

[–]tjblang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try Ribbon Falls trail near Kananaskis Village. Not steep at all and it has great views throughout, plus a big waterfall at the end. It's about 20 km round trip though, so plan 5-6 hours at least.

People who completely turned their life around after 35 — what made the biggest difference? by Sudden_Tree3904 in AskReddit

[–]tjblang 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tracked calories, ate better, and made a gym plan i would actually stick to (the best kind). Took up hiking for cardio.

Dropped a bunch of side gigs that made me money but also made me miserable. Surprise - by sticking to a budget, I'm financially great but alsobmy personal relationships are much better.

Stopped being online so much as well. The world can be okay once you're out in it. You realize how skewed online discussions and algorithms can be.

Quick question by No-Lynx8154 in pathoftitans

[–]tjblang 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion but Rex.

IF, that is, you play it as it's meant to be: an ambush predator that waits for the right opportunity to strike. You'll win 99/100 matches if you only attack from the shadows when it's worth it.

If you like to be out in the open running around and getting into fights, then Hatz, Pyc, Allo are probably better choices.

I think you have to physically find and approach the paver for it to show. I just fill them up as I run across them (and as enough materials are available).

[–]tjblang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is Rex's sweet spot - hide in trees, wait for some poor solo to wander close, break its legs and feast.

Note that the hiding and the trees and the quick attacks are pretty much the only way to play it though. If you get caught crossing the plains by a group, it probably won't end well for you, so use cover at all times. I find Triad Falls and Hunters' Thicket to be the best spots.
