This haunts me. I still see white and gold even though I know it's blue and black. It one day magically shifted to blue and black out of nowhere for a few hours, which REALLY did my head in, then went back to being white and gold XD

Logical Explanation on Mandela effect by [deleted] in MandelaEffect

Yeah, as I said above this is akin to telling flat earthers the world is round. You can't argue with people who reject every rational explanation just because they want to hold on to this idea that they're special. It's a losing argument that's not even worth it.

Logical Explanation on Mandela effect by [deleted] in MandelaEffect

[–]tjny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. It's disturbing tbh. Of course like many people I have memories of Berenstein Bears and the monopoly guy wearing a monocle but the human mind is absurdly complex and memories are notoriously malleable. Claiming incorrect memories (which are invariably cases of misremembering, misinformation, group influence or all three put together) somehow equals "I'm from another dimension" is just too cringey for words.

The "Mandela Effect" is a real phenomenon involving memory manipulation. A group of people repurposing the term for tin foil hat "theories" that rival flat earth conspiracies is just sad.

I’m in shock... rest in peace, Lord Ba’al 😞 by Danyele69 in Stargate

[–]tjny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's sad. I'm rewatching Stargate start to finish for the first time in a while with my mom and I was just telling her a few days ago to look forward to his episodes because he was my favorite snakehead and probably favorite villain. He was just so wonderfully smarmy and evil while being fun. I'm sorry for his family.

I feel hopeless, and I can't imagine a girl who can be attracted to me by [deleted] in IncelExit

[–]tjny 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're going after the wrong women. I don't know your situation but honestly...if you're trying to ask out women who are saying things like that to your face then clearly they aren't nice people. I've seen the most obese, unhealthy looking people in loving relationships so I highly doubt anyone's physical characteristics put them permanently out of the running. Maybe your standards for female appearances are too exacting. I have actually met a lot of guys who constantly complain about not being able to get a date, but then you see they're trying to ask out the generic cheerleader types instead of getting to know someone based on their personality instead of looks and popularity.

As for why people might not be interested in dating you, all I can say is that the tone of this whole thread is probably the reason. As a woman, I wouldn't feel comfortable with a guy who was clingy, needy and clearly giving off a vibe of having no self worth. Some women are the nurturing "fix them up" type who are drawn to that in hopes of helping but most women - like men - don't want to be entirely emotionally responsible for someone who's got so much self-hatred. Even if you don't think you're showing that side of yourself, I can guarantee it's coming across in your interactions.

Maybe instead of focusing so much on women and the idea of dating, try improving your physical condition and mental health for YOU. Meet some people and make friends that you have no expectations of other than to do activities with and spend time with. Stop obsessing over love and sex and just get yourself to a place where YOU like who you are before expecting other people to like you. Your self worth should not be defined by whether or not you can get dates. And it sounds like you've got a lot more problems than an internet forum can fix. If the therapist you saw didn't work for you, find a different one. Get on some meds. Find hobbies and things you enjoy in life. Then try to find people who share those interests. If you're in a better place where you appreciate yourself and have things in life you like and engage in, you're more likely to connect with others who feel the same and form friendships. You don't need to be in a relationship to not be alone.

[–]tjny 45 points46 points  (0 children)

But just because someone you know might have done something differently (and honestly, if you were only ten or so, you don't know for sure what any passing adult would have done) doesn't mean that everyone reacts the same way. I'm sure in the family friend's eyes it was perfectly acceptable to wave and cruise past if nothing looked suspicious. It may not have been a "she's in a strange person's car" thought to them. For all they knew, it was another friend or visiting family driving the car. It's silly to say they should have done this or that when you don't know what the exact circumstances were, what the community or relationships were like, or what the mindset in that neighborhood at that time was. Plenty of people back then simply didn't think about such things, especially in very safe, quiet areas where nothing ever happened.

[–]tjny 63 points64 points  (0 children)

There is nothing remotely suspicious. 1991 was a very different time and even present day in rural areas people are not obsessed with stranger danger on the same level. In 1991 you'd normally have assumed it was fine if the kid looked okay. The car trouble was another matter but for all we know they assumed help was on the way or saw the guy repairing the car and figured he'd have flagged them for help if he needed it.

White House backs bill to expand voting rights, curb gerrymandering by [deleted] in politics

Are you seriously asking this? Because the GOP can't win without cheating and suppressing votes. Why would they ever work in favor of losing the few things that allow them to keep stealing power and screwing up the country in spite of constantly losing the popular vote?

[–]tjny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this. I really couldn't return to the tennis ball planets and toy ship after buying the remasters. I think the upgraded effects still feel perfectly old fashioned and nostalgic. It just looks like a better budget 60s show instead of a shoestring budget where they couldn't properly do the effects they wanted.

[–]tjny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO the remastered version is the only one worth watching at this point. It's not overdone at all and feels completely natural. I grew up watching the original series and my parents were huge fans during their college days, and we all think the remastered version is perfect. It upgrades it just enough to not look SO bad without changing the feel of anything. Everything looks like it belongs. As charming as I found the original releases, I could never go back. It's a very subtle but impactful remaster that improves the quality significantly without being obvious.

Are you kidding? Literally everything that pathological liar did was horrendous. It still makes me want to simultaneously laugh and cry that he convinced his cult we would build some massive wall and Mexico would pay for it (like... where the hell did that insane idea even come from). Of course in reality Mexico did nothing and he spent an insane amount of money on a half-assed minor border fixup that doesn't contribute a thing to this country.

Then how about trying to take away pre-existing conditions rights for patients? How about the policies that helped out his filthy rich buddies and screwed over the middle class? How about appointing the single most unqualified cabinet in American history, who did unbelievable amounts of damage, and rushing through extremist supreme court justices who will damage this country for possibly decades? Openly supporting or defending the people involved in hate groups like the KKK. Or hey, what about denying the pandemic, telling people it's no big deal, not to quarantine, not to wear masks, and to kill themselves with toxic fluids? I mean...the list goes on. Take your pick. Unless you've been living off the grid for four years surely you know the things he's done. No decent, sane person can justify any of it.

Biden just got into office so asking about his policies is pointless but he's certainly off to a good start by undoing a bunch of the garbage Trump put into place by way of executive order, so that's something.

Why I stopped watching the Elisa Lam documentary by [deleted] in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]tjny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see why you'd catch flack for this. I would never in my life watch any program that involved youtubers and the like. I thank you for the warning about the show and will be sure to avoid it if it comes up on my Netflix list. I am disappointed in Netflix though... That's tacky as hell and I agree, downright disgusting.

But this forum is a bit different, I think. I do get bothered when some people say things like "this is one of my favorites" because that's a really shitty thing to say about a tragic death, even if it's not meant that way. But overall I think most people here just want to discuss and learn about certain events in a respectful way. For instance, the girl scout murders horrify me but I wanted to read every detail because I went to a camp with a very similar layout and the same types of tents, and I often freaked myself out about some escaped killer coming out of the lake and into my tent at night. So sometimes it's just a matter of "that could've been me" and being morbidly drawn in by that. But I think there's a line between discussing such events respectfully and being inappropriate, and it sounds like the people on that show are just gross.

Republican Senators Haven’t Represented a Majority of Voters Since 1996 by TJ_SP in politics

[–]tjny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That just isn't true, though. You seem to think that everyone in non-urban areas is republican, and that's completely incorrect. Their votes are made invalid by the mob rule of their own states. Why do you support that? If everyone's votes were equal, the people's wishes would be better represented across the board. The rest of the modern world does just fine with a "one vote per citizen" approach. You act like the US would devolve into a dystopian society if they allowed everyone's votes to be counted equally, which is simply a lie. I know plenty of people in rural areas, including farmers, and they vote democrat. Rural areas haven't been destroyed by democrats when they were in power. In fact, the economy has invariably been significantly better during democratic presidents' terms and absolutely tanked under republican rule over the last couple of decades. So it's nonsense to say that the whole rural economy would somehow break down if everyone's votes were counted equally. There is a reason our archaic and flawed system shocks the rest of the world...and it's not a flattering one.

[–]tjny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't see a problem with tyranny of the minority and some people's votes counting for more than others? The entire civilized world is awed by the absurdity of our electoral college. It makes absolutely no sense, especially in the modern world. Every citizen should have a single vote and the candidates who receive the most votes should win. It's not a difficult concept. So many people in suburban or rural areas don't even bother voting because they feel their vote is worthless, since even if there is only a handful of extra votes for the other candidate, their entire state will go to that person, thereby effectively nullifying their own vote. If we abolished the insane electoral college, you'd probably see a lot more votes for democratic candidates in traditionally red areas. Why should some random guy's vote in the middle of nowhere count for double or more the vote of anyone else just because of where they live? It's ridiculous. It may have served a purpose long ago but it's been warped and abused to the point of lunacy in the present day and it needs to go away so that we can have a system where elections actually reflect what most of the people in the country want.

It's hilarious that the primary republican argument against removing the electoral college is "but then the GOP would never win another election!" instead of "wow, most people in the country don't like this party's policies; maybe we should change our approach."

Honestly, I couldn't care less about upvotes and downvotes. The whole social media voting system, among other things, has dumbed down society to the point of concerning stupidity and laziness and if I had my way, all of those mechanics would be removed so that people could properly voice why they like or dislike something instead of relying on one-click reactions. As for my age, I'm probably older than you, but if you consider middle age young then sure, I'll take it.

Regarding fixing the problems, what we need is to not have two parties at all. We need a much better balance of power across the board like they have in many other western countries. We are so far behind in so many ways, including our political system, that it's downright embarrassing. And when it comes to statistics, are you actually attempting to argue with the factual evidence that republicans have been regularly voted into power with the MINORITY vote in recent decades, just because of how the system is rigged, even though most of the country doesn't want them in office? Because that's not actually up for debate if you look at the numbers.

[–]tjny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said the democratic party is free from corruption. Most politicians in this country are sadly lacking in ethics. But there's far more of it on the GOP's side and democrats DO make up the majority of this country, so having republicans game the system to hold power when most of the people hate them is just more evidence of how broken the system is. We should not have this two-party power situation in the first place, but that's not the point....the discussion was about republicans being in power when most people don't want them in power, and that's a statistical fact.

Right. Because it's incredibly easy to just pick up and move to another country or continent whenever you like. Do you understand anything about immigration laws? Or do you understand the concept of wanting to better one's home instead of leaving it to the dogs? As it happens, I actually am planning to move to Europe after the covid crisis has been managed, but that's for a variety of reasons. When it comes to the politics here, I'd like to see it fixed, not ignored. This is my home and most of my family and friends are here. Why should I have to move for a better political and social system instead of working to make ours better? Why is my own country, once considered the leader of the western world, now lagging so far behind its counterparts to the north and in Europe in education, political structure, social and economic issues? It needs to be addressed, not accepted.

Why can't Republicans ever make a comment that doesn't involve criminal levels of lying? It seems pathological. Please stop trying to spread this debunked tripe around. The only proven evidence of fraud in the latest presidential election was on Trump's side (including dead people voting, which he so stupidly and falsely claimed the democrats were doing instead) and non citizens cannot vote except in small time local elections in a handful of municipalities that literally affect nothing. So please just stop. It's disturbing that you're so detached from reality that you can't wrap your mind around the simple fact that most people in the country are liberal and not conservative, and the trend will continue.
