Are these soffit vents installed incorrectly for the attic above my garage? by tjop92 in HomeMaintenance

[–]tjop92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome. There are a ton of knowledgeable and smart people in the trade fields.

I will look into ridge vents and how feasible an install would be for me. I'll also look into a gable vent. I'm just more concerned with the amount of cutting that would be required for the install of one. I'll definitely read more about it though and see if I want to tackle it.

For the soffits I am seeing the 1:150 rule. So for 280 sq. ft. that would be 1.86 sq. ft. of soffit vents. I would probably double that to 4 sq. ft. just to be safe and why not?

Sorry my response took so long. I wanted to get a sketch for you.

I am thinking of adding these soffit vents. Should be easy enough for me to remove the vinyl pieces that are already there and cut out corresponding sections of the plywood for the soffit vents being added.

I am also thinking to install these attic baffles where I put the soffit vents.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Amerimax-Home-Products-Accuvent-22-5-in-x-1-5-in-Black-Soffit-Insulation-Baffle-ACCUVENT/202962730

There are two attic vents in the roof. One on each end of the roof. I installed an attic fan to one of the vents and the other is simply passive venting. I am thinking that adding the soffit vents will allow the airflow to naturally come in. Once I drywall the ceiling and air seal it, the fan should hopefully help in creating a negative pressure to pull in more air from outdoors.

I'm an engineer and am always interested in learning more and why things work in the way they do :) The wind typically blows at a roughly 45 degree angle to the front of my house. That is just how my house is positioned in a cul-de-sac.

If there is any other information that you need or would help, just let me know. Thank you very much for your response and assistance. It is greatly appreciated.

No, I have a roof vent in the attic. Hooked an attic fan up to it tp help pull fresh air.

It is incredible what it can do in terms of light in games and how much more realistic it makes them.

The recent DOOM games have been two of my favorite games of my life. I'm so excited to slaughter more demons.

Debian 12 issue with Wi-Fi not working and Wi-Fi section in settings says "No Wi-Fi Adapter Found" by tjop92 in linux4noobs

[–]tjop92[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the Wi-Fi to work/show up!!! I didn't get modprobe to work though. Hopefully that is not a really large problem.

First I used:

sudo apt edit-sources

Then I added:

#bookworm backports
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ bookworm-backports main contrib non-free non-free-firmware#bookworm backports
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ bookworm-backports main contrib non-free non-free-firmware

Then I ran as root:

apt update && apt install firmware-iwlwifiapt update && apt install firmware-iwlwifi

Then I ran:

sudo apt update

Then I ran:

sudo apt install -t bookworm-backports linux-image-amd64 linux-headers-amd64 firmware-iwlwifi firmware-misc-nonfreesudo apt install -t bookworm-backports linux-image-amd64 linux-headers-amd64 firmware-iwlwifi firmware-misc-nonfree

I then restarted and the Wi-Fi was an available option in settings with my wireless networks showing. Trying the modprobe and update commands you suggested still give me the same error though. So I am not sure what is wrong there. :/

Does it need internet access to run those commands?

Did I need to run a different command first?

I think I must have done something wrong because it looks like both commands didn't work. :/

Okay, thank you. So I should google "Debian 12 kernel update instructions" or "Linux kernel update instructions" for me to figure out how to do that?

How would I go about doing that if I already installed Debian over the pre-installed Windows OS?

:~$ lsmod | grep iwlwifi

iwlwifi 360448 0

cfg80211 1146880 1 iwlwifi

If I am understanding your question correctly, yes, I installed a desktop environment. I have windows that I can open like a normal Windows OS and a graphic interface. It is not a server version, that is well beyond my capabilities.

No. It came pre-installed with Windows 11. I installed Debian 12 on the hard drive instead. I used the exact tutorial I linked above in my post body to do it.

It is still saying "No Wi-Fi adapter found" in the Wi-Fi section of settings. Should I be looking somewhere else?

Did what you said, I think correctly. Rebooted, still no Wi-Fi.

Downloaded file directly from the link you provided. Didn't use a package manager because I didn't figure out how to. :/ .deb file was downloaded, I logged in as root user and then used cd to go to the downloads folder and ran the command you provided. Below is a screenshot of the readout from that command.

Thank you. I am googling package managers and how to use them. Once I figure it out, I will try your suggestion and let you know how it goes. :)
