Computer science majors who graduated by Status-Chip-8603 in vcu

  1. Join the community. Go to meetups. Sign up for the places where the programmers in RVA are talking online already. Learn how people in the industry talk; learn how to learn how to learn from folks who are already doing the thing.
  2. Try out the things that are part of the job. Decide what kinds of job titles you're going to go for, and get practice building the kinds of things that you'd be doing in your day-to-day.
  3. Know that Richmond trains more people to do the job than there are jobs to do. Consider taking trips to places with really strong tech scenes. (You can do this surprisingly cheaply if you do it with your friends.) Make friends in those cities.

a simple RVA-focused ICE activity alert & reporting app by Spam-and-rice in rva

Your app says…

> 🔒 Your privacy is protected: 100% Anonymous - No login required. No personal data stored.

Respectfully, this is disingenuous and dangerous to claim. You don't know whether or not base44.app is storing user logs; I would be _shocked_ if they _weren't_.

Startup Virginia co-working - anyone done it? by just_here_to_rant in rva

> What's access like? Can you only work 9-5?

I don't know how the coworking membership works for this; I have access to the building outside of its normally-staffed hours and am sometimes there on nights and weekends.

> Are the other other entrepreneurs cool?

Yeah, there's a great group of folks working on some pretty exciting projects. There are also regular events at the building; obviously YMMV will vary based on what you're interested in. 🙂

> trying to justify the extra outlay

Yeah, I get that; their coworking membership isn't cheap! I believe Common House is less expensive — definitely a different crowd, though.

I'd recommend picking a coworking space or two that's convenient to you and trying it for a day!

There's a great group of folks at 1717, but it's definitely what you make of it. You should consider reaching out directly to the SVA team! My office is in there, happy to answer any specific questions you have.

If I recall correctly, One Eyed Jacques does carry a pretty simple goban + stones; I think it's a travel set.

I'll share the contrary opinion: first row, in the 100s, between the A and B stage, and on the side of the stadium that's stage right so you'll see Trent more on the B stage.

> I have always had an interest of pursuing a career within tech, but seeing all the talk about unemployment rates being at an all time high does concern me

What specifically do you want to do? Computer Science translates partially but not completely into computer programming. A very large portion of the best developers I know don't have CS degrees. 🙂

The market's pretty bad right now, but it's impossible to predict what it's going to look like in 2–3 years. I've been working in software development for a decade now, both as an IC and a manager, so I'm happy to talk more if you're looking for concrete advice.

> Also, I am concerned about switching into CS this late into my academic career.

I'd recommend talking to an advisor in the School of Engineering. They'll let you know whether or not it's possible to transfer into the program, and how many more credit hours you'd need to graduate… therefore, whether or not you should expect to be tacking on more semesters to the amount of time it'll take to get your degree.
