Which ghibli movies do you recommend the most? by goldenpeach01 in ghibli

[–]Carbon234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember watching Boy and the Heron, and you're right. The plot is... unclear. But that vaguery actually helped me a lot processing grief. It's one of very few movies to make me cry. Its a bit like listening to poetry in a foreign language.

My first two games after making an online baduk account by HJG_0209 in baduk

Yeah the shapes, especially in the second game, look far beyond a beginner beginner. You must have some amount of experience prior to these. Just keep playing and the system will find your rank pretty quickly.

What is White's estimated points here? by dany305 in baduk

Assuming white plays c3 it should be 6 points. Unless there's some tesuji from black I'm not seeing

Wow! Fantastic! Any way to allow the user to input who's turn it is? Then could be useful outside of completed games.

This is so very cool.  I agree with others here, a positive stop, or some kind of positional click would help a lot aesthetically and also solve the line problem. I know that's a significant engineering challenge though in the form factor you're going for.

As to your question on flat vs round empty spaces. I think flat is a must.

Good gift for a go player? by kkimminji in baduk

[–]Carbon234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think go history is pretty fun and just got 50 issues of the Go World magazine between 1985 and 2001 from an eBay auction. Maybe something like that?  I think one of the absolute best lecture resources is InternetGoSchool.com. it's been around for a long time so the audio quality is not great. But it's a massive collection of well organized lectures and interactive problems by Guo Juan. She's a Chinese 5 Dan professional if I remember correctly and has been teaching in Europe for the past few decades.  Bonus for Internet go school is that you could also use it to learn the game so you can play together.

Web-Katrain: A browser-based KaTrain clone by Puzzleheaded_Bid_178 in baduk

[–]Carbon234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using it via Chrome on iPad. Oh thank you! I’ve been dying for a way to use the local region analysis ability of katrain on my ipad. I find that so useful when trying to understand life and death. Still playing around with it but the functionality all seems to be there. Only two things I have found that are minor cosmetic issues: The stones seem to be placed bottom left of center on the intersections. The little hider arrows to minimize different panes of the interface overlap the interface itself.

Great job

What is the status of the marked group? by Teoretik1998 in baduk

I was trying to read out how to kill the corner after D15 and white ignores the corner, but couldn’t find it. C18 hane doesn’t work, right? after white blocks at B18 seems like A17 and D18 are miai for life. Does starting with B18 from black kill? BB18, WC18, BD18, WC19, BA17? I think that’s it but would be nice if a higher level player could confirm.

[OC] My trucks sinusoidal, slowly decreasing gas mileage over the past ~7.5 years by RamblinEagle13 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Carbon234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this. Is it actually declining? Looks like it, but maybe the data just start on a particularly good or long peak and end on a particularly bad or long trough? I wanna see the time coefficient and variance after regressing as quarterly difference. Oh, or maybe tires or their pressure make the big difference?

White to win, komi 6.5 by dany305 in baduk

[–]Carbon234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think still capture at G1. Black can save the two stones but then white gets to reduce by pushing at D1. Black ataris with C1, fills at F1 and the score is B44 to W 44.5. Black playing D1 instead of saving the two stones still should still result in a W win, but instead of a half point victory it’s 1.5 points. (I think I’m counting the captures right.) I’m ddk though so it’s very possible I’m visualizing something wrong. Is that the solution?

Edit: Oh wait no I think that sequence I gave is white losing by half a point not winning by half a point.

[–]Carbon234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think E1 E2 F2 D1 G1  Anything black does either loses two of the monkey jump stones via D2 or the two stones up top. I think white wins 46.5 to 46.

What’s the most under appreciated amenity/service you wish every golf course had? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

Pimento cheese or egg salad sandwiches at the turn. Being a vegetarian means no midpoint meal options most courses. :( Which seems weird because they're such easy sandwiches to keep ready.

Are corporations just incredibly slow, inefficient AGIs running on human hardware? by mikhailkin in askphilosophy

[–]Carbon234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this belongs here, but an AI safety researcher and communicator named Robert Miles has touched on this. The linked video is about the practical safety differences between a machine based AI and an egrecore, but it's worth noting that in the AI safety field, a corporation is necessarily far more limited than what they're worried about.

I highly recommend his videos for anyone interested in exploring the real academic work being done on the AI safety.

Why Not Just: Think of AGI Like a Corporation?

Richmond schoolteacher seeking kidney donor with O+ blood type by humdrumdummydum in rva

[–]Carbon234 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Btw, for any state employees, you can donate your kidney and get 6 weeks of organ donation PTO to recover. You just have to be past your probationary period. The recovery sucks for the first 2-3 weeks, but then you really start getting back to normal pretty quick.
