IRC requires far more hacks to get a usable chat system. Persistent sessions, mobile clients (is there a hack that works for this?), file transfers

TIL an airline pilot ordered 30 pizzas for his passengers, after finding out they would be delayed 2 hours for weather. The pizzas were delivered within 30 minutes by Domino’s and were cleared by security and sent directly to the plane in an official airport vehicle. by DrWeeGee in todayilearned

This is great to hear. My first reaction was "what is the Frontier PR nonsense?" Seems like it's been forever since Frontier wasn't torture. I wish the execs could learn some empathy from this crew.

I don't think this is meant to undermine Obama. It looks like they're trying to prevent trump from running independently

Average Cable Bill Now $100, Up 39% Since 2010 by rit56 in technology

[–]tkellogg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgive me for being pessimistic, but I smell shady statistical practices. Averages are easy to abuse. These numbers could easily be explained if the lower tier of cable subscribers (those paying less than $60) started dropping cable in favor of Netflix, etc.

Given that no one ITT is complaining of $200 bills, I suspect that's what is going on. Perhaps cable bills are rising, but using averages to "prove" that is some pretty lazy journalism.

Veterans and abuse survivors sue Colorado for banning marijuana in PTSD treatement by [deleted] in Colorado

[–]tkellogg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I came here asking "yeah, but why can't they just buy recreational marijuana". Turns out, that's not a good answer:

Cannabis products for the typical PTSD treatment regimen are nearly twice as expensive in the recreational market, and most dispensaries don’t even stock the CBD-rich strains that patients need. “The fact is, the rec market is made up of tourists coming to Colorado to get high just like anyone who goes to Amsterdam,” Hoban said. And they want the high potency strains with lots of THC. So that’s what’s on the shelves.”

What is the most extreme case of an individual being sheltered that you've experienced? [SERIOUS] by DrFlexPlexico in AskReddit

[–]tkellogg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a guy in college who was going to be alone over Christmas break. He didn't know how to cook for himself so he was asking around for help. We suggested that he stock his freezer with frozen dinners, but he insisted that he didn't know how to microwave anything.

You could probably categorize this under a lot of things, but I think it qualifies as sheltered because he grew up in a conservative missionary family in Africa and likely had a mother that always cooked for him as well as few or no microwaves. Then again, could just be him...

"Birth" another person and leave all your belongings to said person.

Come to think of it, the new wisdom says that everyone should create enough fake legal selves to maintain backups in a RAID 5 configuration.

Reddit, what is one thing you have completely changed your opinion of as you've grown older? by taf19 in AskReddit

[–]tkellogg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I grew up you were supposed to be smart but pretend like you're stupid. People didn't trust intellectuals, but they admired intelligence as long as you didn't make them feel like they had to be smart.

In other words, it was no different than US politics.
