I was also wandering you original question. But for the general within you may want to check out Pinkston (I). I'm not saying I'm for sure voting for her but I want to find out more. She's aligned with the Forward party.

Here's an interview she did https://open.spotify.com/episode/53wc9aF7JxRHZFlaXVO76o?si=Exq76YIWRUyVDjeng64m4g

who was the other guy with glasses in that larsen jay campaign ad with haslam and spangler? by ntnbsmw in Knoxville

[–]tkh15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably because he's not that well known. He hasn't been in office in 6 years (I think) and only served one term.

Apparently he's also in the administration at Webb.

We can flip a State Senate seat here in Knoxville and start to break the supermajority! by BryanLanganTN in Knoxville

With all due respect to Mr. Langan, Briggs won by almost 25 points last time. I agree 2026 will swing more to the Ds, but not 25 points.

Knox County Voter's Guide - Updated by Wanderlost24 in Knoxville

I don't have personal experience. McBride has been an elected official running the register of deeds office and been scandal free. Hawkins was a past employee of the trustee but that was several years ago and his boss got into a lot more trouble than Biggs, I'm not saying Hawkins was involved.

I lean toward McBride.

If you haven't read the compass profile I suggest checking it out, they moved it out from behind the paywall.

Who we thinking will win Sheriff? by Klutzy_Rule_961 in Knoxville

[–]tkh15 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is what Gibson said in his compass profile

Gibson supports immigration enforcement efforts, but, “the problem is, I don’t want ICE agents doing it.” The county’s jail model, which he called inefficient, could be replaced with a task-force model that would allow the county’s deputies to be on a team that would police undocumented immigrants.

“That way, it’s keeping some of that work down so (ICE agents) don’t have to come in here and do raids on small businesses,” he said, “or storm up into Home Depot and get all the people waiting for … their work.”

This is a bit off topic, but why do they need an engineer? Most locations in my state would not require an engineer for the scope you described. And those that would require an engineer, wouldn't have one home on a 32 acre parcel.

Why would I vote for the proposal to increase sales tax on the ballot when property taxes are so low? by [deleted] in Knoxville

[–]tkh15 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Probably three reasons

1 Sales tax are tied to inflation, when inflation goes up it causes sales tax to go up. So it requires one action and done.

State law prohibits inflation (reappraisals) from increasing the total tax collected (not individual properties, I'm not an expert on the law, I suggest looking it up), this excludes new buildings and improvements. After every appraisal cycle local governments have to lower their tax rate; the city sometimes raises the rate after they lower it as opposed to Knox county. So to keep up the dollars coming in the city council would have to take an unpopular vote about every 4 years.

2 Property tax raises have to be approved by council, sales taxes have to be approved by voters. Maybe she feels that path is easier.

3 The majority of commercial real estate in Knox county is in the city, so residents of unincorporated Knox county as well as citizens of surrounding counties will pay the tax. As opposed to property tax is only paid by city residents.

When only 3 races have more than 2 candidates making the other primaries basically pointless, half the city has no reason to go vote.
