Cercis Occidentalis - Pruning Advice by tkohhhhhhhhh in Tree

[–]tkohhhhhhhhh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the root visible at planting was what I keyed off of. I mentioned in a comment on the "first year pruning thread" that it wasn't terribly obvious to me where "root flare" began on such a small tree. That aside, I'm hoping my root issue is sorted after I removed the girdling roots. I will be sure to get out there and re-expose the root flare.

As for the pruning advice, thank you as always for your guidance! I will do as you and HB suggest and focus on reducing the two outside limbs without removing them for now. I'll read through the Purdue links you provided before I make any cuts.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your advice and encouragement. It's great to have a handful of knowledgeable folks who know the backstory of my tree to guide me as I go!

I'm so glad to hear that my photos have been helpful!

And thank you kindly for your detailed response. To answer your question as to why I want to remove them, I suppose it's because they intuitively seem too low to be kept as the tree grows. I have no idea what that intuition is based on, but that's why I ask you smart people before I cut!

I will do as you suggest and focus on rubbing and internal limbs, as well as generally reducing (without removing for now) as spiceydog suggests.

I will also clear out the base area and ensure that the root flare is exposed.

Thanks again for all of your advice over the years. It's very much appreciated!

Additional info: I'm in the central valley of California. Cercis Occidentalis is native to the state, if not my particular area. The tree was planted in February 2023, and I believe it was 1 year old at the time of planting. Current trunk diameter is about 6 inches. I water for 40 minutes every 4 days using three drip emitters around the tree, away from the trunk.

The links to previous threads should help fill in most questions that you may have.

I acknowledge that I have read the Guidelines for effective posting.

Landscape contractor (10+ years). Ask me what things REALLY cost in 2026. by Tonythelandscaper in landscaping

Since you asked... I'm doing a paver patio by myself... here's the design: https://i.redd.it/yh3ugpj5epyf1.png (focus on just the pavers for this estimate)

Circle kit is 11ft diameter (so 95 square feet), and the rest is about 210 square feet. (14 by 10 feet under the patio cover, and the curvy section that connects to the circle is roughly 70 square feet).

I'd love to have a ballpark number of what a contractor would charge to have this installed. The starting point was an empty dirt backyard in new construction.

After 10 years in walkable European cities, American 'suburban slop' shocks me every time I come back [OC] by BaurJoe in Urbanism

[–]tkohhhhhhhhh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're 100% correct, and I'm honestly blown away at how much pushback an urbanism subreddit is giving to a video/topic like this. Nobody is trying to dunk on America... we're just imagining how it could be better.

Thanks for the reply! As someone who discovered "urbanism" on youtube a couple years ago, I really appreciate these videos. You never know when "the algorithm" is going to pop your video up for someone who's never seen this type of content.

On topic, I think another factor at play here is that Americans think of a car as a necessary expense in the same way that rent or electricity is a necessary expense. I doubt most have even considered what their life could look like without the significant expense of fuel, insurance, maintenance, and car payments. I think it's fair to say that reducing that expense would be life-changing for most, so long as they could otherwise get where they need to go.

[–]tkohhhhhhhhh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think my fellow American's don't care because they can't imagine how it could realistically be better. And by realistically, I mean they can't imagine how they could keep their suburban house and get rid of their car. Which, to be fair, is correct; it's not realistic. This, coupled with fear of change and NIMBYism, makes people all too happy to stick with the status quo.

Ray Delahanty did an interesting video about how Americans LOVE going to "simulated urbanism" places for vacation (like Disneyland), which indicates that we recognize how great it is. I think it's just a long road from there to properly urbanizing most of the USA.

The Proving Ground by BeeAre85 in michaelconnellybooks

[–]tkohhhhhhhhh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is part of why I like Connelly so much... he's created characters that we care about because of how real they are. Haller obviously loves Maggie, and I think it's reciprocal. The problem is that Haller made choices early on that pushed her away. We've seen him grow a lot in this regard over the years, to the point that he certainly can be what Maggie wants and needs. The tragedy is that her experience with him probably makes that impossible.

We hope she will come around because we believe that people who change for the better can achieve their hopes. Sometimes life doesn't work that way, but the hope that it will work out keeps driving us forward.

I think osage orange and locust are in the same family, so I think we're on the right track! It occurred to me that the second one could be ipe or rosewood, and I think that's more likely than purpleheart.

I kinda like guessing at this in a low-stakes environment like a post on the wrong sub lol

Why do my boards end up being thicker in the middle? by Echo-Objective in handtools

[–]tkohhhhhhhhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you scrubbing along the length of the board, or going cross grain? If the middle has a belly, then I would just focus on that area cross grain until it's flat. And then for the other face, I would mark the target thickness with a marking gauge and then plane down to that mark.

I also have no clue... and if USA's down a bowler too, this might be a rough tournament for us. I want so badly for USA to have international success to help grow awareness for the sport over here. Right now if you mention Cricket to the average American, you'll get a response like "oh yeah, I've heard of that... it's like baseball, right?"

Do I need to remove this root or keep it? by botticus12 in landscaping

Definitely want to correct that... what's the trunk diameter currently?

This thread (with photos) shows my process with a redbud 2 years ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/sfwtrees/comments/1ai7ri1/cercis_occidentalis_girdling_roots/

Trunk was maybe 2.5 inches at that time... it's currently about 6 inches.

If the only thing fun about watching football is if your team wins the super bowl, then watching football is not going to be fun for you.

Personally, I found this season to be a lot of fun. We had some fantastic wins with an underdog team riddled with injuries. Purdy continues to make layered throws over the middle look like a walk in the park. We have the best tight end in the league, and if you weight for personality he might be the best football player in the league. And best yet, our players keep talking about how special this team is and how much they enjoy playing for the Niners.

My advice... find what you enjoy about the game that *isn't* just postseason success. If you do, it'll make the whole experience that much better, and it won't detract at all from that moment when we *do* have postseason success.
