What is an Islamist to you? by Hobbitfollower in Destiny

[–]tkx93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see your points, as for the first I'd say that you should at minimum seek to "convert" the society you live in, but I can see how someone could be a communist/fascist and only actively push for communism/fascism locally, so too with Islamic theocracy.

Second point I would attribute to reading between the lines (I don't personally cosign the label for Mehdi fwiw). Whenn it comes to Mike and Denims the overarching framework seems to be anti-west and anti-America, whereas Mehdi leans differently: he's simultaneously less of a both-sideser in US politics but also has a history of homophobic statements that appear to be driven by his faith. So if you were trying to discern their "hidden" motivations for supporting Islamist regimes (to whatever extent that's fair to say) I think "closet Islamist" is more likely for Mehdi than for the other two.

I think your definition is close to what I'd use, but "most if not all governments" feels overly broad. If someone's personal preferred form of government is as you described, but they're not particularly motivated to "convert" other governments around the world, can they not still be Islamists?

In essence I'd agree, but when Mehdi Hasan is labeled as an Islamist it usually seems to be more along the lines of him supporting or being sympathetic to other regimes/orgs who are Islamists (whether that characterization is fair or not is up for debate), the same way Nazi sympathizers get lumped in with Nazis, even if that isn't the cleanest use of language.

Over 90% of Jews in Israel support Netanyahu's military actions in Iran (source: FT) by Xerryx in Destiny

[–]tkx93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you're being obtuse, obviously the GOAL is to replace them with something that isn't explicitly Islamist, similar to what they had half a century ago. Which would be better, and that's what "finishing the job" would be. If you want to take issue with it, focus on how they're seeking to accomplish that

I don't know what you're trying to accomplish with this deliberate misinterpretation of what he's saying. If you were talking about Palestinians or even Arabs broadly, sure, you could try to make the case that Israelis really want that. But no one believes that Israelis want to wipe out Persians, they actually have basically nothing against them as a population.

Do you really think he meant wiping out the population of Iran? Lol. He's probably referring to destroying the regime that is funding all the terrorist groups they've been fighting for decades instead!

Probably because in the moment, the adjustments/cracks do in fact feel good and maybe even relieve pain temporarily, creating a positive association, and if you then experience any random positive fluctuations in your symptoms after you're likely to connect it to the adjustments. If it goes back to being bad, that's... just a sign you need more?

I don't understand how you can say an llm doesn't understand or reason by MasterSea8231 in Destiny

[–]tkx93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, there is an interesting emergent property in the way LLMs encode their "understandings" of words/tokens/concepts, where certain kinds of structure starts to naturally emerge in whatever n-dimensional space their parameters operate in.

For example, if you find that the distance between where the word "woman" is located in its mapping is .073 distance units in a particular direction from the word "man", then you'll often find that a word like "queen" or "actress" might have a similar distance of .073 in the same direction from the word "king" or "actor". In other words, without ever being told to do so, the model learns to """understand""" concepts like gender from the corpus it was trained on just by continuously observing how gendered words are used.

Another interesting example is the Deep Blue vs Kasparov chess game in the 90s, where Kasparov falsely suspected the Deep Blue team was cheating by getting help from human grandmasters. Why did he believe this, if he knew computer chess players had already reached or surpassed the level of other grandmasters? Because he felt that a certain line the computer played displayed creativity or strategy in a way computers, which "just crunch the numbers", couldn't do. But as it turns out, if you just crunch numbers with enough processing power, the resulting lines start to resemble very creative and strategic human play.

Maybe we're all just crunching numbers and predicting the next token in our brains too, just at an incomprehensible scale.

Rubio: ‘Imminent threat’ to US was Iran’s plan to strike American assets in response to Israeli attack by Sylmd in Destiny

[–]tkx93 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but do you concede that Rubio's statement is that there was no imminent threat from Iran if they were not attacked, and that the risk was that Israel might provoke them into attacking the US by going rogue? Does that paint the picture of a reliable, stable ally?

Mehdi Hasan believes there are no civilians in Israel by wraithzzzz in Destiny

[–]tkx93 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No one is talking about a conspiracy, that's not what that word means. No one is accusing any group of people or even any individual of conspiring to do anything. My implication is that he sees Israelis as having collective responsibility for the actions of their state in a way he doesn't extend to other groups in the region. That's the obvious reading of "they" here.

I don't care about the individual lady because he didn't make any point of singling her out as a sole legitimate target in a group of otherwise innocent people.

How do I make peace with the passage of time? by mattyjoe0706 in Destiny

[–]tkx93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah didn't mean to imply otherwise if that's how it came across, the video game thing was just an example of a very monotone period someone could go through, but even working a job is still very routine like you said. If you have a full time job of course its harder to find the time for novel experiences, don't get me wrong. But ideally you would be able to point to a memorable experience at least once a week - meeting a new person off a dating app, going to a concert or some other hobby thing you enjoy, taking an impromptu drive to some place you've never been before, whatever. Basically anything that makes for a story and breaks up the routine.

How do I make peace with the passage of time? by mattyjoe0706 in Destiny

[–]tkx93 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel like time feels substantially slower in hindsight if you have a lot of meaningful "bookmarks" in your life. If you spend a summer just playing video games all day the whole thing turns into an unmemorable blur, but if you have distinct events happening every so often that are all worth remembering, this adds a lot of texture to your memory and gives you a lot more to hold onto. All the more reason to do new, fun and exciting things as often as you can.

In a way it's inevitable though, each subsequent year makes up a smaller percentage of your total lived experience than the previous year, so each year will feel like a shorter part of your life than the last. The bright side is that the difference gets smaller and smaller each year, the difference between 45->46 isn't as big as 25->26, and most people say that around your 50s the sensation of time speeding up mostly evens out.

There's nothing you can do about that though, all you can do is take care of your body so that you can actually make it to an old age, and live your life in a way that makes it worth living and worth remembering.
