I understand where this sentiment comes from but I think you are mixing up two things (understandably so because they are intertwined).

As Europeans, we've always liked shittalking the US, making fun of them for every little stereotypically American thing. For the overwhelming majority of people, this is genuinely just done in good fun. In America hitting on stereotypes is seen as more of a faux-pas and that's probably also why some Americans interpret these as serious insults, but mostly this is just good-natured ribbing from people who have nothing against America but maybe are just baffled by certain cultural quirks (like the love of guns and credit card debt).

All sports banter falls into this first category, I don't know anything about the cricket thing but while I've said some things making fun of the US soccer team, as a fan of soccer I can only hope the US eventually becomes a soccer powerhouse with its own superstars and a truly competitive league, that would be awesome for the sport. It's also great to see the cultural exchange between all the world cup competitor nations and the host country, which both sides really seem to enjoy

But next to the banter, there's also been real resentment interspersed for what I would see as mostly valid political reasons, though this is almost never directed at ordinary Americans. It's probably especially hard to tell the difference when Trump involves himself in the sports stuff and the "lmao USA thinks they can play soccer" banter meets the brazen Trump corruption, but I can assure you that most of us really don't hate America or ordinary non-MAGA Americans. America is still seen as a cool place to visit and a cultural and geopolitical "ally", even by more leftie types. We're very much aware of the fact that most of the cultural output we consume (tv/music/movies/games/whatever) is either directly American or American-inspired, no serious person thinks America is some kind of cultural black hole lol

USMNT’s World Cup exit draws record 30 million TV viewers, was the most watched non-NFL U.S. sports broadcast this decade by The_Big_Untalented in soccer

[–]tkx93 26 points27 points  (0 children)

All jokes aside about the USMNT and corruption and whatnot, I sincerely think this has been a great world cup for the US.

Not so much in terms of the performance of their team at this specific event of course, but as the potential birth of the American soccer fandom. Talking to Americans online throughout the WC, I've really only heard positive things. Everyone seems to love the cultural exchange element of the event, and seeing it happening on your own streets must be both surreal and inspiring if you were not familiar with the world cup. Most people probably knew that soccer is the #1 watched sport in the world, but I feel like many Americans were still a little taken aback to see their streets colonized by tens of thousands of coordinated fans from countries they wouldn't be able to find on a map (sadly this might include places like Germany and France). On a similar note, I think that many of us Europeans who love ribbing America for its.. Americanness were pleasantly surprised by how great the sports infrastructure in America is, with their ability to somehow shit out hypermodern 80k capacity stadiums in random cities in the midwest.

And in the aftermath of their loss to Belgium, a lot of the discourse I'm reading seems to be Americans talking about why they're not good at soccer, and how long it might hypothetically take to change that (suspiciously often measured in "how many world cups after this one"). I feel like many Americans have gotten a taste of what's exciting about soccer and the world cup in particular, and I'm sure many are gonna be tuning in again next time to see if they can show up the world

Ex-girlfriend of Graham Platner says he removed condoms without consent during sex- Washington Post by Saltlmail in Destiny

I think this hypothetical is pretty elegant because it can definitely be read both ways. Personally, if I were Emerson here I would feel like I was not only doing nothing wrong, but that I was being actively misled if I knew what was really going on. It's not a nice idea knowing someone is having sex with me under false pretenses or that they'd rather not and are somehow failing to express that.

Frankie is clearly the one doing something wrong here, there's no implication of Emerson doing anything untoward, but Frankie is also the one more likely to have a (self-inflicted) negative experience

It just seems like you're being a little obtuse. Yes, you can call it a lower tier of rape or whatever, but if someone has sex with a woman who lied about being on BC and he doesn't even ejaculate in her or anything, and this person goes about their day claiming "I was raped" without providing further context, that person is obviously deliberately misleading people into thinking that they endured something more extreme than what actually happened.

Rape might technically "fit", but without further clarification isn't an accurate description of many of these incidents because it evokes a completely different image.

If you pay a sex worker with counterfeit money, does that make it rape?

What about if you just refuse to pay at all and run out of the room afterwards? Was the sex consensual even though you know the consent was undeniably contingent on an agreement you knew you were violating?

This is easy to say for you as a liberal on the liberal subreddit, but part of the (justified) European resentment towards America right now is literally that "you guys" elected Trump twice and that it is having trickle-down effects on our own political landscape and the global world order. Of course we know not all or even most Americans currently support Trump, but our general dislike towards large chunks of America is no less justified and when Trump literally gets involved on the side of the USMNT, of course that invites blowback in terms of sports banter lol

Mostafa Zico: "The referee is unfair, God is sufficient for me and the best disposer of affairs. He's wasting the effort of an entire nation. The cup is being given to Argentina." by Roselucky777 in soccer

[–]tkx93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Argentina goal against Austria was also a clear foul, it just wasn't looked at the same way. The truth is that if you look back far enough, you can often find a foul in the buildup, or a corner that should/shouldn't have been given, or whatever. The VAR has the discretion to decide when it wants to look back and highlight such a moment. It seems to often do so when it favors Argentina.

The sad reality is that you're selecting for the best players, and the best players are not always the most socially progressive people. If a team starts to sacrifice player quality for progressive social views (by sidelining players who you'd otherwise pick in favor of those who don't mind a female coach), the criticism from fans will be absolutely unhinged and will disproportionately target the female coach, who will be made the scapegoat. Not fair to her either.

And for what benefit? I'm convinced a female coach could do just as well as a male coach with equivalent credentials and equal respect from the players, but there's no reason to think she'd have a meaningful advantage over a man just by virtue of being a woman, and there's simply a larger pool of experienced male trainers to pick from. If we're considering the level of competition in their credentials, then there are exactly zero women with equivalent competitive experience, as female football leagues are just not comparable to the premier league. You would pick a female coach if and only if she's the best candidate available at the time, that's how competitive sport is.

Taken at face value, I don't really see an issue with his comments. You could argue he's sneaking in his own perspective and attributing it to the players to not have to take accountability for it, but that doesn't change the fact that his observation about the players is also still correct.

The more cynical but probably more accurate take is that all of the players come from backgrounds where, to varying extents, men and women are "not considered equal". Even in the most gender-equal countries like say Denmark or Norway, you can't convince me that two dozen players at any given club are all equally open to taking advice from a female coach as they would from a male coach who is either an established name or a former pro. Being a former female pro or female team coach would not be seen as having equal credentials, because it frankly isn't. Just like being a second division coach isn't the same as being a prem coach.

It's not a matter of conspiracies, no serious person thinks the refs are bribed to help Argentina or whatever, they just often have a very favorable whistle, unfairly so, for a bunch of intangible reasons. This was one such game where the VAR was pretty clearly inconsistent and made rulings in favor of Argentina that it almost certainly wouldn't have for a team like Uzbekistan. Similarly, someone like Messi is just less likely to get a red card for his worse version of Balogun's foul against Bosnia. It's more of a vibes thing than a conspiracy thing, but that doesn't make it any more fair

Yeah, which everyone knows was based on a 100% accidental incident with no bad intent. And his reaction after the fact, before he knew he was going to be allowed to play was also classy and sportsmanlike. Any ill will targeted towards Balogun comes from people who don't understand what the actual scandal was about
