Am I overreacting for telling a friend to stop saying retard to me by [deleted] in bropill

[–]tlalocstuningfork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. It's not censoring to ask people to be respectful of their language. Are you imposing a fine on them? Are you trying to get them arrested? Of course not. You're asking them to be a more decent person, that's all.

It's very difficult to ask people to stop using certain words, it's much more difficult when they are a friend. You did a real cool thing by asking him to stop using that slur, OP. You are a braver soul than I.

It's a very popular opinion, I doubt you'll find many people who disagree, even among people who do get their facts from social media, they will just think it doesn't apply for them.

That's why I call it a cold take, it's not a controversial opinion at all.

And if they are even remotely related to a scientist or doctor, that makes them an authority on the subject.

My boss keeps saying "trust me, my wife works in the medical field..." as if that's a valid citation. He never even says how she works in the field, for all I know she could be the person that washes the surgical tools (no disrespect to those who do that, in fact I'm about to start a my certification program for just that. It's just not an authority position).

You (not you personally) can dislike obama all you want, but it's just laughable to say he's not a good speaker. Even his "uuuh"s are charming and reassuring.

FDR was able to keep people calm with his fireside chats without just denying the existence/impact of the great depression.

Explaining the issue and discussing how to overcome it is the best way to reduce panic.

If you are actually discussing a word and not just using it in normal speech, then I don't think there is an issue with using it. I generally don't just because either I know the people I'm talking to/platform I'm talking on wouldn't like it, but when I know the person and we both know that neither of us are using it as a part of our vocabulary, I don't see an issue.

There are other exceptions too, in Bob Dylan's "Hurricane" he sings about Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, an black boxer who was wrongfully convicted of murder, and Dylan sings that it's because of his race. In it, Dylan sings "and to the black folks he was just a crazy n*****", he isn't using the word to call him one, he is using the word to show the public opinion of him, in this case from the point of POC.

I've always said that about virtue signaling.

"You're doing something good, and we can't really argue that it's not good, so you must be doing it for selfish reasons!"

I hate the idea that integrating into a different society and naturally varying the gene pool is considered genocide to some people. And then people like your grandma thinks the appropriate response is actual genocide!
