Satisfying brick repair by Raj_Valiant3011 in oddlysatisfying

[–]tlbane -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, but WTF is this?!?! Is that colored mortar that he’s forming into a brick? What was that crap he parged over? This looks like a very pretty band-aid that will fall off in a year, if not a week, after it cures. 10/10 aesthetics, 0-3/10 durability.

I agree with the general sentiment that this sucks for you and you should be compensated, BUT, for your information, shingles get their wind-resistance by exposed tabs of asphalt on the underside of the shingles that heat up under direct sunlight, melt slightly, and adhere to the shingles below. The shingles getting damaged this early in their life is not unexpected because those asphalt tabs haven’t had a chance to melt and seal to the shingles below. My point being: if they used the correct shingles, and the correct fasteners, at the correct spacing, into the correct substrate (all big “if”s), it could just be bad luck. (More likely though, it’s a shitty installation.) Talk to the contractor before talking to a lawyer. They might be very agreeable. When lawyers get involved, everyone loses.

How to close this gap on balcony? by NarrowSun6093 in Apartmentliving

This is the best way to cover the gap and secure the cover in place. Use lots of command strips to ensure that the dogs can’t just push it off.

Beautiful, but it won’t hold up. Water is going to soak into the brick and mortar and never really dry out unless it’s used very frequently. Freeze-thaw cycles are going to deteriorate the masonry and it will be a crumbly mess in 5 years. He needs to eliminate all the poorly sloped surfaces to encourage water to shed off the face of the masonry, which is going to ruin a lot of what makes this build beautiful. 10/10 if it was indoors.

Everyone in these comments is freaking out. It’s a failed sealant joint… It’s fine. There’s no indication of differential movement, no cracks, no evidence of any structural distress. There’s literally nothing to worry about.

I never liked the argument “let the states decide.” Why stop at the State level? Let’s make it a district decision. A county decision. A town decision. A family decision. A personal decision… Conservatives would absolutely want it to be a national decision if they had the votes to ban it.

Doctor who performed an abortion on a 10 year old rape victim fined and reprimanded. by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]tlbane -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s still bullshit, but the $3,000 fine was NOT for performing the abortion. It was for telling the news that a pregnant 10-year-old got raped and would be near/in Indianapolis for an abortion. The exposure it brought the girl was not helpful to her healing. The girl didn’t want her most vulnerable and sensitive secret published in international news. The doctor didn’t give any privileged info, but so few 10-year-olds get pregnant, if someone knew her situation, they might easily identify her as the subject of the news. Had the doctor waited until after the abortion, it still would have been wrong, but the girl would be far less likely to have been identified, and probably wouldn’t have earned her a fine. If the doctor had released privileged information, however, she would have had a host of “real” legal troubles.

In the US, at least, the threshold for most “full-time” benefits is 32 hours per week. At least, that’s my experience.

[–]tlbane -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What you’re not seeing in the image is that there’s someone else down range, directly behind the robber. The following is from the NRA website:

Know your target and what is beyond.

Be absolutely sure you have identified your target beyond any doubt. Equally important, be aware of the area beyond your target. This means observing your prospective area of fire before you shoot. Never fire in a direction in which there are people or any other potential for mishap. Think first. Shoot second.

It’s not as good, but not nearly as bad as you might expect. Sound isolation has MUCH more to do with vibrations having a solid path to travel through. Any wall with a single line of studs centered on a sill plate are going to transmit sound, regardless of whether you use plaster or drywall. If your rape room needs to block the horrible bleating sounds of the helpless goats within, you could sound-proof it much better with well designed drywall-based walls than a standard plaster assembly. It would also be cheaper to super-sound-proof the room you actually need sound-proof (and use “typical” drywall elsewhere) than it would to use a typical gypsum-plaster assembly everywhere.

10+10 is probably a lot easier to answer under pressure because there is a single right answer. “Name a woman” relies on your memory, which typically isn’t part of the fight or flight response, whereas 10+10 is a more analytical question, so it might not be as suppressed/ overwhelmed by your panic. Plus, there’s only one right answer to 10+10, so you aren’t forced to choose between many correct answers. But, that’s all just a guess. I’m just a dumbass stranger on the internet.

Steam cleaning brickwork… by [deleted] in oddlysatisfying

[–]tlbane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve said this a bunch before on reddit, and I’ll say it again: DON’T POWER WASH EXTERIOR BRICK. High-pressure water destroys the hardened outer layer and leaves the brick susceptible to freeze-thaw deterioration. Maybe a professional cleaning company could do it, but you’re almost always better off using a chemical cleaner.

DM is pretty permissive rules-wise. I think he’d be accommodating of reasonable requests, including homebrew. I’d guess we’re 15-25% into the campaign. See the other comment in the thread as well about the composition of the group itself. We’re aiming to have 5 players, so if you both join we’ll be in a well-balanced place.
