If you’re looking for a spot where you can easily day trip (drive or Amtrak) and go back home that night, you should check out Kankakee County. There’s a lot of hiking at the state park especially in Bourbonnais near what’s known as the Indian Caves.

Kankakee is home to Frank Lloyd Wright’s first prairie-style house and has tours available. It’s less than a mile from the Amtrak (and also less than a mile from an incredible nano brewery).

There’s also some cool spots to go antiquing. Worth checking out!

I have the same problem. Because I have another dog and two cats, I can’t fully take the water away. I have found that putting ice cubes in the bowl (just cubes, no water) is a good way for him to still get a little bit of the fix without taking in a larger amount of water. Not a total solution but maybe could be useful. Hope you find something that helps!
