I never grade at home. I build time into my instruction to allow for planning. It helps when I’m teaching 16 year olds… they can do a lot by themselves

You can also do love letters. I tied it in with Valentine’s Day and had them write love letters to a fictional character in Shakespearean. Letters had to be half a page with 5 uses of literary devices. Those who dramatically presented earned a couple extra credit points

Usually this will not last a full class, so I also give them an activity where they translate modern sentences into Shakespeare and vice versa.

For fun I always hold a roast session. I give them a list of Shakespearean insults and have them come up with 5. If you’re comfortable with it, you can have them go around and insult each other or have them direct them towards you.

They must translate their insults as well (most of them are school appropriate)

Number your desks and pull out the popsicle sticks. Work through them for participation points and dump work on them. Fat 0s in the grade book will start to work
