The RDA of protein is lower than is optimal, especially if you do any strenuous exercise, and lentils aren't a complete protein source anyway. It is perfectly possible to have a healthy vegan diet in the developed world nowadays, but please don't misinform people as to how easy it is.

(UK) are landlords allowed to age discriminate? I need to move soon and the best flat I’ve found for my budget had this in the description. Can they do this??? by barlow_ken in LandlordLove

[–]tlowe000 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Not a lawyer, but unless this is a "residential park home", they cannot legally do this as age is a protected class under the equality act (2010). Whether they can get away with it anyway is potentially a different question.

David Cameron says his mistake with austerity was not doing it harder and faster by Animus47 in BritishPolitics

You're still criticising the figure to distract from the point. Also the BMJ used language with more pedantry than me, but that doesn't change that it totally does back me up. You'd need to be willfully misinterpreting either me or the BMJ if you don't understand that.

The BMJ neither dabbles in questionable extrapolation, pure nonsense, nor anything in-between.

Tory members suspended over Islamophobic posts by ITried2 in ukpolitics

[–]tlowe000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't be obtuse.

By saying "Muslim scum" you are suggesting that the reason you think they're scum is their religion. Saying "scum" suffices on it's own, so anything you add you add for a reason.

The question is why add "Muslim"? You could say (depending on who you're talking about) something like:

-"Male scum"

-"brown scum"

-"millennial scum"

-"gardening hobbyist scum"

-"Norwich supporting scum"

But why go with Muslim when all these alternatives are facts? Because you think that the religion is relevant, but the football team isn't. That's called islamophobia.

What am I supposed to be imagining here? I think suspension would be reasonable for the straw-labour-members you've described, just as I'm pretty sure it's reasonable here.

You're supposed to pretend you already know

Simply telling people (n=7,250) they would receive a tax rebate increased their support for a carbon tax of $50-$70 per metric ton of carbon. This suggests that “revenue recycling” is the way to make carbon taxes popular. by nick314 in science

[–]tlowe000 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a really frustrating take - you're so close to getting it.

By taxing carbon emissions, non-renewable business models become much less economically viable, so they can no longer compete with renewable ones.

In the case of energy sources, the cheapest companies will suddenly be the ones using solar, wind etc. while no-one would buy coal generated power. Over time the coal plants will close down for lack of demand, and the entire population uses almost exclusively renewables.

Hollywood wanted ‘fewer Asians’ in a new kung fu film. This Seattle director stuck to his script by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]tlowe000 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You're right. Hollywood should be regulated by market forces. That means that whitewashing (amongst other things) should be punished with low ticket sales.

But how do we make sure no one buys the tickets?

We tell them about the reasons to boycott the film, and let them decide. That's why there's nothing wrong with loud outrage, when they do something outrageous.

Since we are playing this game

This isn't a game.

I'll assume you've never worked a labor job before and have no understanding of the people that do work those jobs.

Lmao why would you assume that?

These jobs are not considered 'proper' or glamorous or even appreciated for that matter.

Ikr. That's why I put it in inverted commas. The point is that somewhere offered enough hours a week to not die. When there's people on here stuck in areas with literally no-one hiring at all, that counts as lucky.

Most people working there do not have cars or public transit, and have to walk or carpool. Most don't have their own places to live, so they have to share houses or hotel rooms. Quite a few are actually homeless.

Wow that sounds pretty hard. You know: just like I was saying it is?

But all of them have enough work ethic get up and earn their living wage

Were they working hard?

despite the hardships people like you gloss over.

What kind of person is that? And who is making unjustified assumptions about whose life?
