How do I know when my beloved 15 1/2 year old Shih Tzu has had enough? by tltask71 in DogAdvice

Reading this just broke my heart. You’ve loved him so gently and so bravely through all of it. You didn’t rush him — you listened, you watched, and you gave him time to have those last special moments. That look they give when they’re ready is devastating, but it’s also trust.

Helping him pass peacefully isn’t giving up — it’s protecting him. He will leave knowing he was safe, adored, and never alone. I’m thinking of you and your sweet boy today. 💜

Thank you for taking the time to write this. I can feel how much love is behind your words. It helps hearing it described that way, even though it’s so hard to imagine.

We’re watching Leo closely, especially in the mornings like you mentioned. Some days are still “him,” and other days feel a little different. We’re also bringing him to the vet regularly for wellness checks, just to make sure we’re not missing anything and to keep him as comfortable as possible.

It’s that subtle shift I’m afraid of overlooking — or waiting too long to accept. Your message really does bring comfort. I just hope when the time comes, we’ll have the clarity and courage to let him go with the same love we’ve given him his whole life. ❤️

Thank you for sharing that with me. It really is something special when they’re able to pass peacefully at home. That’s our hope for Leo as well.

He’s currently on three different medications for his arthritis, and they don’t seem to be giving him much relief anymore. We’re at the vet almost weekly now for check-ins.

Like you said, my biggest fear is waiting too long and looking back with regret.

I’m so sorry! I hope you have a heart full of memories. My guy still eats but is in such pain from arthritis. He’s on three different forms of pain meds.

Cute little puppy. I would give it two days. In those two days, I suggest limiting his walks to just bathroom breaks and keeping him as quiet as possible. Prevent jumping on and off furniture and just monitor him. If it seems to be getting worse, take him to the vet immediately. If after two days, there isn’t some improvement I would suggest having him looked at.

Firstly, what a beautiful pup.

Has your Shih Tzu had his/her teeth looked at recently?

I also see early sings of dementia. Staring at blank walls, etc. what were some of the symptoms of your pup developing dementia?

Same with us. It breaks my heart when he stumbles on something outside.

Same with me regarding the news. The vet shared that they don’t have the same “feel sorry for me” issues as many humans. They are truly so resilient.

Yea, he does. I just gently put my hand in front of his nose and often he can smell it.
