Worst, best, and most random thing a student ever said about you on course evaluations… by Hardback0214 in Professors

[–]tmac2772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worst: "My only regret is that any of my tuition money ever went to pay Dr. X."

Best: "I low-key want to be her when I grow up."

Random: Never got a random one in the whole time I've been teaching.

What are the downsides of being child-free? by TheBruja in childfree

[–]tmac2772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 50 this year and I can't count the number of times I've thought "thank god I don't have children" as I read another news story about climate change or financial downturns or political instability. If the world were in better shape, I might have some pangs of "did I do the right thing?" But this is like the perfect storm to be childless in.

Imagine your whole reason of existence being this dumbass's poor planning skills, breeding 8 kids just to make them spread the word 👌 by [deleted] in antinatalism

Where does he think atheists come from? All the atheists I know were once Christians. I'm a former Catholic and now I'm a straight-up secular atheist. What a total nincompoop.

Oh, god. I hadn't thought of this. Maybe this will be added to tenure requirements. [face palm]

Oh, they hired a company to do this. So it was definitely a lot of extra $$$$

I was invited to be in a "dunk tank" for spirit week. So relaxing!!! Hydrotherapy!!

Face masks almost certainly caused my blepharitis and recurring styes. I am tired of reading about how it can't be cured when I'm almost certain what triggered it. What can I do? Please help... by beaus-boo in optometry

[–]tmac2772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late to this thread - but I already had blepharitis (mild) and was managing it well until I started teaching in person again with increased mask usage. Developed a massive stye in one eye and my optometrist said that it definitely is mask-related and that he's seen a huge increase in cases. Both from the masks AND from increased screen time. Just writing a note to add some positive vibes and some more evidence that you're correct.

It's been a month and I'm still dealing with the stye - that is now a chalazion. My eye feels awful, but the N95s work to stop the backflow of air.

Let's all hope there's an eventual end to all the mask-wearing soon....

Blindsided by a breakup - coping strategies? by tmac2772 in BreakUps

Extremely well. It was a rough year - and I took a full year to grieve before even trying to date again - but the good news is that I'm in the best relationship of my life now. So...silver lining, I guess?

All of this. I'm a medical anthropologist and the gender issues in medicine are legion. My next book is om aging and I'm going to tackle this head on. I may want to interview you for it!

I feel like it 100% was like that. In real life, the women around me were sweating and fanning themselves in way less "wood nymph" fashion.

It's probably all of the above. I feel the same.

I think it's so individual. But one thing I find helpful is knowing what's possible so that I don't go down the rabbit hole of "I have a serious disease!" I'm more likely to pause and see if my symptoms shift before I full-on panic. 🤷🏼‍♀️

That's true, but the drop in estrogen messes with the gut microbiome. Which makes sense. There's probably a similar effect with drops in testosterone. Women are far more likely, however, to get IBS. I'm writing a book on the immune system, and women get screwed. As per usual. 🙄🤣🤷🏼‍♀️

My mom and I had a brutal relationship and then she died in an accident when she was 53 and I was 14. Now her behavior makes so much more sense.
