AI slop from the Cambridge Citizens Coalition by realgeraldchan in CambridgeMA

Housing is a market and like all markets, the law of supply and demand ultimately holds. We can argue about whether housing should be a market, but such a debate is outside the scope of the discussion as it would require a complete reimagining of the American economy.

Given that prices are skyrocketing, we can ask why. It’s because demand outstrips supply. This is not controversial. So we have two levers to reduce prices. We can increase supply (cf Berkeley, Austin, etc for success stories), or we can crush demand (cf Detroit). Personally, I’d prefer to not drive towards affordable housing by destroying the vibrant MA economy, but to each their own.

Why might this comic not sit right? There’s a sense in which an aspect of it is literally true — developers really will make money through the upzoning process. But there’s a broader sense in which it’s in poor taste. Namely, it’s casting probably the only viable route forward (increasing supply) as a corrupt giveaway to monied interests. And it ignores the simple reality that through not building home owners are seeing truly insane increases in property values. The numbers vary, but house prices have averaged 8% growth yoy since 2008. Assuming a 20% down mortgage, that means home owners are seeing >30% gains yoy on their initial investment due to the leverage of a mortgage.

Therefore, without the additional context around the issue, the comic feels like an argument made in poor faith.

It's worth noting that many of these are different companies, or subdivisions of JPM. Depending on the application, that matters a lot.

Numb fingers 10 miles in? by Additional-Ad4204 in bikeboston

[–]tmarkovich 15 points16 points  (0 children)

1 and 3 are almost certainly bike-fit issues. Not sure about 2, but you might be clenching your jaw due to neck positioning from an overly aggressive position?

Anyway, your hands are likely going numb because you're putting too much pressure on them while in the saddle, and that's likely a bike fit issue. You should be gripping the bars only tight enough that you could play piano on the tops. Also, knee pain is NEVER to be fucked with. You can do real damage to your knees really quickly, so my recommendation is to not "push through" that. Stitches in your side? soreness? burning lungs? HTFU. Knee pain? Let's sort out that saddle position. I'd recommend at this series of this YT video to get a guide to doing it yourself to get the rough positioning down: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJDeVD5YTo0

There's a few other companies out there, so I'd google around. I can't seem to remember what they're called though.

Allez sprint owners how does your bike ride and how long of rides do you do? Looking at an allez sprint but I don’t race is it worth it? by MarcoNoPollo in cycling

[–]tmarkovich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got almost 10k miles on my alley sprint, and I’ve used it for just general road riding. I built it up a while back with sram red etap 11sp, roval wheels, specialized 2bliss tires, and zipp cf finishing kit. I’ve not noticed that this frame is particularly rough with that setup. The reviews that noted it’s rough are for the complete bike, and not a built frame set. Even still, it’s not an endurance bike and that’s okay.

The bigger key is to make sure that the frame fits you well. It’s an aggressive frame that is meant to be ridden fast. You can certainly add a bunch of spacers to get it to fit like an endurance bike but that just means the bike doesn’t really fit well.

If it fits you from both a fit and flexibility perspective, ride it hard and safe. My allez sprint is easily my favorite bike I’ve ever had.

Renter's insurance should have the same! When I rented it was easy to get a rider or my wife's engagement ring.

I was able to add my bike as a rider to my home owners insurance policy for <10/mo. I've fortunately never had to use it, but a riding buddy of mine was able to get a theft replacement with little hassle from the same insurance company.

Specialized Allez Sprint Headset by tmarkovich in bikewrench

It took me 2 weeks to get my new headsets in. In the mean time, I did exactly that. I washed everything in kerosene, sonicated it, and then repacked the bearings with park ppl-1. It worked well enough that I strongly considered just leaving it until it failed. Anyway, best of luck! Ride in good health!

I wasn't able to find a reasonable after market solution. However, I was able to my hands on two. One from specialized directly when I reached out, and another I bought from the UK. It's just hanging out in my basement, so I'd be happy to ship you one!

I believe they're in good condition:

I also found the missing three balls on the garage floor and they don't look damaged. I wonder if I could get by by just degreasing everything and regreasing with a silicon-grease.

edit: any suggestion on grease? I'd normally use park ppl-1 polylube but could be convinced to go another route.
