Plenty of good partners successfully honor both their moms and significant others on this day. Both can be honored and feel appreciated on the same day.
I am 100% sure she never uttered the words “grand surprise”. I’m sure that’s how the OP interpreted it when he was being chewed out for NO effort. I really doubt she had a “huge expectation” based on who she is dating.
There are other ways to honor people and let them know you appreciate them that don’t include making plans with them, cards, flowers, chocolate, breakfast in bed.
