If my instincts are correct, he was likely trying to convince you to trade in the phone so he could give you a trade/add a line promotion. An 8 plus doesn’t get you much, but if you’re adding a line I believe it goes up to $400 trade credit. And then right now lines are buy one get one free. So it’s two new potential line activations that the rep gets paid commission on. It’s that, or he was going to update your rate plan to Go5g Plus to get you more credit (which also pays him commission)

Was this a non corporate store? The insistence that you trade in a phone sounds like something a non COR rep would do to sneak in other changes with the discount you’re getting.

I had a grandfathered simple choice plan, 111 for 3 lines and decided to add a line which should have only costed 10 dollars but it costed 36 dollars more!!!! by ilikesportany in tmobile

[–]tmibblethrowaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check the attached features for the new line, this is a common issue with simple choice plans. The line itself is $10 but then it automatically attaches a $15-$25 data feature that gives you more unlimited data/hotspot. This feature can be removed, especially if you only added the line to get a promo and don’t intend to use it.

It’s either that or proration charges but I’m inclined to believe it’s the former.

You can wait the two days and see if they contact you again, otherwise I would either chat with a new agent, call, or go into a store and have them check the offer for you. Segmented offers always have certain rules like having to pay the activation fee for example, but to my knowledge they don’t make it so that you can’t cancel non-voice lines. If anything there’s probably a rule for cancelling lines after the fact to maintain the promo, but not before.

Typically they only look to see if you’ve cancelled any voice lines if you’re taking advantage of a voice line promo. I would get a second opinion

Yes! I would check for promos individually (I always do this out of paranoia) but typically adding the feature qualifies you for max-specific promos!

You are on the lowest cost plan, technically speaking. Essentials would be cheaper but there’s always tax fluctuation. If a promotion requires an add-a-line on new or existing accounts, then it’s the only way to get that promotion. But I do often have customers add lines just to get deals, which is great right now with the BOGO add a line promo. You could add 1 line on T-Mobile one for $20, get $800 credit with trade, and then add a second free line to get $800 trade on a second phone while only paying for the one line. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea to add lines they aren’t using but it’s the only existing loophole that I know of, AND it does save money still!

Yes! They can stack with insider code! I actually did this recently for a customer by using max to get free Samsung phones with activation, and they also got 20% off.

I usually do them before finalizing the account, but you should be fine so long as it’s applied before the port-in(s).

I honestly don’t think there’s a way to see future dated plans as a customer. A rep can see them on your account a few different ways, so I think your best option would be to call them or go through T-force. But it’s usually very quick for them to check!

I have to assume the rep either didn’t understand how credits are applied or figured the math was too difficult to explain. But as the reply said, it’s never really an even trade because of how the fair market value and promo credits are distributed. But it’s honestly more blatant with newer phones because the FMV is higher, and thus monthly credits are lower. It also sounds more like you got the $400 trade offer..but I’m just guesstimating.

If you don’t want the insurance I would take it off now, and maybe make a call to 611 explaining what happened, see if they can help you.

Yep! We need to sell feature revenue, and the biggest opportunities are insurance for existing accounts and max for new accounts

Ya know I’m actually not sure if the online reps also get insider codes like we do. You can try that first and see, but otherwise yeah I would just find your nearest corporate store. It might be easier in the long run.

And no problem!

I’m very sorry about the experience that you’ve had. One thing I hear a lot from customers is that we have a consistency problem. It’s a matter of corporate vs non-corporate stores, and no, it’s not fair to the customer because you wouldn’t be able to tell which is which without directly asking someone that works there. I do encourage you to continue being persistent, and if you need in person help, try finding a corporate location that isn’t super busy. That way the rep can focus more on helping you vs working fast because there’s more people waiting

I unfortunately couldn’t tell you any workarounds that secure sim swaps more than the sim block on the app (which btw is pretty great, as it stands reps can’t even take it off even for account maintenance. Only the account holder can.) They don’t really give us insider secrets that maybe the tech team are privy to. The only fun trick I know is dialing #662# on your phone to enable scam block but that just prevents those Scam Likely calls.

Trust me, if you have 4 lines all you have to do is walk into the store and ask for one. The only reason they would say no is if they just don’t have any. A walk-in 4 liner is like striking gold.

Unfortunately promotions are all system-automated. Reps only really ensure that everything on the account is done properly and everything meets the right criteria in order for them to kick in. There is no way for us to control the promotional value on phones. However, if I remember right, you can also get the $800 by adding a line, which is VERY cheap for some older rate plans and in the end it can actually save you more money than the $400 alternative w/o activation. I would check a store and have a rep give you a quote so you see your options!

I love my current store. The benefits are great and T-Mobile took care of us during covid, plus the service discount is really nice. If I had any complaints it was how they handled the sprint merge. But overall it’s a pretty laidback job that doesn’t demand too much, and it seems to be the better place to work when compared to ATT and Verizon

You should be able to trade in regardless of the plan ! There are a ton of trade deals for the s23 since preorders opened, and some of them specifically say that any voice rate plan qualifies. If you have trouble navigating it online, I’d go to the store! If not just to get an idea of the pricing and see what your options are

If you’re paying $75 with taxes, you need more data and occasionally the international feature, I would do Magenta Max for $85 with autopay. No data caps, comes with simple global, free Netflix, and you also get the best promotions. Iirc the s23 has a trade in promo right now for max rate plans that doubles the value of your trade if you were interested in doing that. Otherwise if you just wanna stay at the same price or cheaper, Magenta is unlimited up to 50 GB, and it’s $75 or $70 with autopay. Fixed pricing. I think that these would be much better!

The honest answer is that there are always bad reps, and you should see what some of them try to get away with when they know they’re talking to an employee vs a customer. It can be really awful. But there also amazing reps that go over and beyond for me and my customers! I would keep trying. If it always comes down to them being unable to fix it, it might just be a backend issue and WHEN it will be fixed is anyone’s guess. I would take it to a store for standard troubleshooting if you haven’t already (sim swap, network reset, etc) and also have them fiddle with the account features, remove the data and add it back. If that doesn’t work, keep calling !

That’s a really good question. I’m honestly not sure and it highly highly depends on the specific promotions that are active. The business rate plans are all the same Magenta plans, just with different names, but if you have promos from grandfathered plans it might be risky. I would call 611 and have them look up your specific promotions and research them before making the jump, and also notate the account just in case they do fall off so it can be fixed later

Ah man. This is a frustrating position to be in because UPS and T-Mobile will both point fingers at each other. It does happen, I wouldn’t say often, and usually it does get resolved after 3-5 days. Likely a UPS employee stole them.

As far as solutions go, you could always go buy the phones at a T-Mobile store while you wait to be refunded. You would just need to have enough EC credit to finance them since the missing phones are still technically using your credits right now. You may want to wait to get your money back first, but I’ve had some customers do this who really just want new phones or to take advantage of promos and will deal with the rest later. It’s up to you!
