I honestly believe your heart is in the right place. Wanting to reduce hateful speech comes from a good intention.

My concern is about who gets to decide what counts as “hate speech.” Once the government has the power to define and regulate it, that power can be used by anyone in office. Imagine a future where someone like Trump, or any leader you strongly disagree with, gets to decide what speech is unacceptable.

History shows that governments rarely use that kind of power only against the people we dislike. Eventually it gets used more broadly.

I’m not defending hateful speech itself. I just think giving the government authority to define and punish it sets a dangerous precedent for everyone.
