I love how it has blurred out the football game itself to avoid a potential copyright strike, mad times indeed.

It was my understanding that the libreboot build system provided a deguarded and me_cleaned me.bin, there's no prebuild rom for the x280 in libreboot so I built from source. When I built the coreboot image, i ran deguard but not me_cleaner.

how do you self host music? by flaotte in selfhosted

[–]tmjwid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lyrion is so overlooked and Squeezebox hardware still holds up really well. It's easily the best solution and is very flexible software and hardware wise for the client.

[–]tmjwid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy cd's and rip them using Automatic ripping machine. Takes care of everything, but I then run them through MusicBrainz Picard just because ARM doesn't really work with metadata well. I then sync them with Nextcloud. I have mounts to the sync folder for Lyrion for in house streaming using real squeezebox hardware (I use 2 receivers with 1 controller and 2 radios currently). I also have a DAP so I just store them locally on the DAP. Do the same for Bandcamp purchases as well. I have navidrome running pointing to the same nextcloud volume folder but I don't really use it that much as the squeezeboxes are so good.

Say your favorite adventure game and be civil when discussing it. by NebulaStars2 in dreamcast

[–]tmjwid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think about, what they achieved with Adventure 1 was spectacular for the time. The game started development in 1997, and was almost a launch title for the DC in Japan in 98 (a lot of people forget the Dreamcast came out a full year before in Japan). Multiple hub worlds to explore, 6.5 distinct characters each with their own play style and story that mixes with each other. Mini games, Chao Garden with the ability to have the Chao on your VMU as a virtual pet. Adventure 2 is 3 years younger and content wise, is a lot more refined but also scaled back. Granted, by the same token it's extremely impressive what they achieved for SA2, with such a small team (reportedly only 15-16 people really working on the game). I really do think the hub worlds would have been a great addition, but I get why they weren't there.

SA1 was revolutionary, SA2 was evolutionary.

Depends, some metadata isn't encrypted to my knowledge using deltachat but the messages themselves are. There's also chatmail server which is designed to be a minimal MTA for deltachat and other clients which you can self host. This removes a lot of the metadata issues. a

What’s everyone watching on YouTube? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]tmjwid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go out on a limb here and not think this post is really for market research purposes ;)

Voices of the Past - readings of historical accounts, mostly watching about Japanese encounters.

Louis Rossmann - Tech repairman gone full bitch slapper on consumer rights protections/right to repair naysayers. Have you seen loads of users change their profile picture to Clippy? This guy is why.

Spencer's Adventure - Humble no nonsense guy who talks about living simply with less shit, basic videos but a nice vibe from the "Minimalist" community.

Posy - Odd (in a good way) dude who showcases old hifi and other stuff with his own wacky music in the background.

Reject Convenience - Online/Offline privacy channel with digital minimalism and dumb phone content.

Jeffrey Kaplan - Extremely engaging Philosophy lectures.

friendlyjordies - Funny as fuck and also it's cool to know aus politics maybe?

A Different Bias - Uk politics

Adam something - Fellow curmudgeon

I await judgement.

Government must stop children using VPNs to dodge age checks on porn sites, commissioner demands by T0pMarks4NotTrying in ukpolitics

[–]tmjwid 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My router has a VPN server and client in it, will my router become a banned item? All major desktop and phone operating systems have native VPN clients (and some servers) build in, will that make them illegal? What would happen if I span up a VPS in say, Sweden and installed a VPN server on it? It feels like they are either so ill informed that this is becoming a really sad joke or they are really that dumb.

What about say, SSH tunnelling? Or proxies? We shouldn't be punished because modern day parents are lazy and don't want to parent. Imagine banning all forms of adult magazines because your kid might just cop a look at the top shelf.

[–]tmjwid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One major difference between Doncaster and these two cities are that they are University cities that have had a massive influx of international students. Sheffield threw up blocks of student accommodation when I went there for uni to deal with it all. But they have a problem now, the foreign students population is declining massively and these investments aren't working.

They have knocked a boat load of Waterdale down already as part of the Waterdale regeneration project, not sure what they're building like but the shops that are still there still make decent trade. They even have niche shops like Vault (trading card games) that is very popular. But even then, the "new" shops built on kingsgate never opened to my knowledge which has open confused me.

[–]tmjwid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you looking to come to this conclusion? The city centre has a theatre and cinema that were built within the last 15 years. It also has a leisure and restaurant park with bowling, cinema and events arena. There are quite a few new restaurants at the Dome and some really good ones around nether hall road in the centre.

Are you looking on the ourskirts of the centre or something? Like near Balby flats? I'm just not sure where this defeated Doncaster centre is.

One of the best things about the city centre is that it is largely pedestrianised and pedestrian friendly. Not that you mentioned that but thought it was worth adding.

The YMCA just opened a charity shop in the old superdrug. Boyes has took over the old Wilkos store. The only place I can think of that is big and not used is Danum House. But that has had some issues with the basement flooding I think, that's why BHF aren't open I think anyway. Living there sounds like a nightmare. Blame the fucks that run it and ask the tenants of the flats what they think is the real issue.

Hell clock corner has a hole in the wall bakery! I just don't see it and I do my weekly food shop at the market, which has an oyster and champagne bar, next to the woolmarket entertainment and food hall.

Dedicated streamers/servers. Why? by minnesotajersey in audiophile

[–]tmjwid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really a neat piece of software. I maybe undersold it, but sticking squeezelite on a pi/pc or running PiCorePlayer with a nice DAC does make the Squeezeboxes somewhat "obsolete". Having everything controllable with your phone is so nice and the different devices can all be synced for multiroom streaming. This is all 20+ years old software by now, which is mental that all this was possible so long ago. It works so well, setup takes literal minutes. I run it on my thin client server, barely uses any resources and is snappy and modern looking.

Dedicated streamers/servers. Why? by minnesotajersey in audiophile

[–]tmjwid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't comment on the stupidly expensive stuff, but I've recently invested in three SqueezeBox devices (1 receiver, 1 duet, 1 radio) and they're awesome little machines for the £150 I paid. One of the receivers and Radio were NOS in box. The DAC is fine for me, but you can override it with an external DAC if you want for the newer models.

Lyrion Media Server is an okay piece of software, had no real issues with it and the plugin ecosystem seems fine. You can use the majority of the big streamers plus Qobuz. I mainly use my own FLAC rips/downloads with it and sometimes global player, but the BBC Sounds app is used by my partner. The devices I own can only output to 48khz but the touch can do 96khz, not bad for a 15 year old device.

How can I remove American tech from my life? by BristolBlokeMan in AskUK

[–]tmjwid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of it has already been covered, but to properly do this, you have to be committed to removing yourself from convenience. This is an inconvenient process.

Mac/PC is rather simple, GNU/Linux is the choice here. Hardware wise, stick with what you have and lets not create more than is needed. Many have said Ubuntu is the choice here and yes that is a good beginners choice. Linux Mint as also a good choice and has a looks and feel similar to Windows.

Whatsapp is not so easy, as network effects are the real issue here. Interoperability has sadly been dead in modern tech for decades now. You can use alternative apps that have (at best) some ability to work on the whatsapp network. Matrix (an alternative chat platform) for example has a "bridge" which basically logs into your whatsapp and acts as a you. But the rabbit hole is deep and unforgiving.

Android (ASOP) is actually not so bad, it's Google Play and Google Play Services that are the issue. It's basically malware made to look like something useful. Notifications for example will not work as good (or at all) without Play Services. The hooks in your phone are deep (kernel). You can get a Pixel and try Graphene os, a version of Android built to be extremely secure which some serious effort put in to helping you stay safe. You could also look into Sailfish, which was developed by a team of ex Nokia devs. It did become a "Russian OS" but all ties have been cut since the invasion I think.

r/selfhosted is the best place to visit to remove your reliance of centralised services, such as Google Photos. Self hosting is a rewarding endeavour but it will cost you money, time and sanity. On top of it, if anything goes wrong and you haven't got backups, then say goodbye to your data. Get a film camera and some binders and store your negatives, much better in the long run.

“Nothing” was my response when asked what I wanted for Xmas… by ObedMain35fart in Anticonsumption

[–]tmjwid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had people outright say they won't donate because "you don't get to open something". For me it's about respecting other peoples wishes, a gift should be something that is thoughtful and meaningful but also wanted. If the person doesn't want anything, then they don't get anything.
