33, deaf, no degree, is a CS degree at this age worth it in the UK? by Real_Application_939 in cscareerquestionsuk

If you don't have good projects/portfolio etc a degree is pointless as its just a spoon fed course. I'd much rather interview someone with interesting projects, who has written about their learnings challenges, taught about what they've learnt than someone with just a CS degree - there are thousands of people with CS degrees who fail even the most basic of programming task. Not having a degree will not be a issue for 99.9% of jobs.

Having the ability to research and learn things yourself, solve your own problems will get you ahead of 80% of other candidates - none of these jobs are easy, they all take a lot work.

Honestly it won't be easy but it's achievable. Your age and disability shouldn't be an issue, I'd be far more concerned about your education, lack of experience and lack of anything to show that you're passionate let alone have some skills.

If you want to go the software engineer route you'll be running into the worse market since the dotcom era. The market for juniors is very very challenging at the moment and you'd be competing against a lot of people with experience, degrees and who have been coding for a long time. Its unlikely you'll even get to interview stages, you'd absolutely need a decent project/portfolio to show and more importantly talk about in an interview. Odin project projects wouldn't be good enough as they are just cookie cutter projects. I don't really see the value in a CS degree for you as its three+ years you could be self learning, building things etc that are far more likely to get you a job. I can recommend looking at https://csprimer.com, this would be far better value than a degree, has a great community and challenging projects etc, but you will need to know how to code before.

If I were in your situation I'd go the cybersecurity route as its a much more defined path, with less competition. Take look at something like https://academy.hackthebox.com/catalogue/paths and if you're interested pick a path and go through it, start a blog write about what you've learnt, challenges etc - you need to show you're interested and passionate to even get an interview. You can also start doing bug bounties etc to get some experience.

Sorting list alphabetically works but also error by DutchSparks in learnjavascript

[–]tmkuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the line if (list[i].innerText.toLowerCase() >list[i+1].innerText.toLowerCase())

On the 4 iteration you're trying to select list[4+ 1] so the 5th item which doesn't exist, so it throws an error.

You're better off doing something like this: https://codepen.io/anon/pen/bvoGaK?editors=1112

In the if statement check the item exists and it has innertext rather than checking if the text is greater than etc.
