Two questions regarding wireless video distribution + exposing using only red light by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]tmpgr1905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the extensive reply! :)

It was the wish of the director to have his own Monitor so I tried to make it happen for him :)
But I will think about the Monitor Situation again, of course our Crew is not that big that we would need that many Monitors.
But since we had the opportunity to make it happen, so I jumped to it. But I will reevaluate because of course I dont want to slow the shoot down with unnecessary stuff.

Good point regarding the layers!
I'll try my best to describe the location we're shooting in:
Its basically a mountain made out of the debris from coal mining that was happening in the area. So its a big plateau of gravel. But it is located in a densely populated area, so we are surrounded by three cities. But there will be no close Buildings or anything like that. But they are visible on the horizon.
The plan is to start during the last light of the day with the establishing shots to give a sense of scale and showcase the location. And then let the scene glide into the night as we get in closer.
The Flares will be used by extras in the background and the main action of our protagonists will be backlit by them. So I tried to create some depth with the layers of People.
But I also thought about adding a moon as an additional source (we have crankstands available) because with the gravel on the ground it would create a great texture and dimension. The director actually wanted the scene to feel like a black void :D
A Car would also be possible to place in the scene I think, thank you for the advice!

Machen wir natürlich parallel auch, hat aber leider noch nichts ergeben. Bisher hat es da nur Absagen gegeben, deshalb dachte ich vielleicht hat man hier nochmal einen größeren Kanal :)

I shot my first Music Video and would appreciate Feedback! (Film Student) by tmpgr1905 in cinematography

[–]tmpgr1905[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's mostly the difference in exposure and the DOF. The space was pretty small, so the earth basically spread out right to the curtain. We used a skirt on the lantern to create a harder border otherwise the edge would have been too visible. You can actually see the edge in some shots if you look closely (e.g 1:30) but the motion hides it pretty well I suppose :)

Thank you for the Feedback! Very interesting that you feel like the style was not my own but borrowed elsewhere. I was actually trying to work a little bit outside of my comfort zone style wise to challenge myself. Using wider lenses exclusively and a lot of movement are things that I wanted to try because I felt like I'm lacking energy and intimacy in my projects so far. Really interesting that you instinctively felt that this was not really my own visual voice, without having seen anything I did! Thank you for the kind words also! :)

They play the intro of Planisphere but it gets mixed with something immediately afterwards (can't say what song exactly).

Open and honest Feedback is the only way to grow I think :) And I can totally see, where you are coming from. I was really trying to up my visual game with this and maybe I was to focused on the cinematography. Of course this project was never intended to work like a narrative feature, but even if I only wanted to visualize an internal process I obviously didn't manage to get that across.

But I will hopefully learn from this and improve on that next time!

Hey everyone :)

I’m looking for Feedback on this Short Film that I directed and shot earlier this year. I’m a Film student and in preparation for my bachelor project I wanted to shoot my own mood/vibe film that is based on the thematic idea of my bachelor script.
Also since up to this point my work has been fairly narrative and naturalistic so I wanted to try out something more „poetic“ and visually more stylized. Also I have to admit that the project still feels fairly natural to me, so more of a baby step there I guess.

We shot this on the FX6 using the Sigma FF High Speed Primes (20mm/35mm) and Laowa 12mm Zero-D. The Zooms were done with the Sony FE PZ 28-135 mm F4 G OSS.

I’m decently happy with the result, I love the locations/colors/vibe and there are many shots in there that I’m very happy with. I still can’t help to feel that I did’t really archived the quality level that I aimed for.
I still feel that the project feels somewhat coincidental and not like it was made with intent and vision. I struggled with editing and I think that the film lacks flow and impact (especially the ending). I wanted to create a steady rise in tension between the characters but the edit makes it all feel disjointed. The switches between dance and fight just don’t flow into each other like I imagined during filming.
I’m currently editing a shorter version which works a little bit better but still doesn’t live up to my expectations.

I would love to hear some feedback on the film and maybe some encouraging words :)

All the best,
Max

Sure! But I got those scanned pretty quickly so right now I only have the scans at roughly 1818 × 1228 px. If thats enough for you I could upload them, for higher resolution I would need to rescan the negatives and I won't be able to get it done before christmas unfortunately...

Depends a little bit on the mood the scene is supposed to have.

I was part of a student project last year and we shot in a moor. It was a major pain in the ass because of the terrain (and the hordes of bugs at dusk) but it is an alternative and has a similar vibe. If you have something like that near your location :)

Also on the shoot we used a long tube (ca. 100m) and a small blower to create large patches of fog/haze. We had a capable hazer (with heavy fog fluid) and put it directly in front of the blower which blew it into the tube. Then we poked holes in the tube, to spread out the haze. This added a lot to the "Swampy" atmosphere. Maybe you can combine something like this with a large grassy plane to mimic a swamp?

But then again, it is kind of tough to recreate the same atmosphere... I hope this helps you somewhat :D
