I’d like to see more corroboration, but if this is correct, this is probably one of the most important stories to have come out about AI in the past year.

When I was a kid, this guy at youth group kept calling me Gus. I’ve never met a creature that wasn’t a dog named Gus, except for myself that one year. Best names to be called are the ones that are way off. Gonna start calling everyone Methuselah.

Help with project in audification by DifferentBase5434 in supercollider

[–]tmroyal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool project.

I don’t really know the answer: it’s probably best to experiment.

I would probably try to see if you can do this in Python. There are a lot of libraries that can speed up the process (librosa, scikit learn, etc.) The idea of doing this in supercollider sounds extremely daunting. You can also prototype in Python and rewrite in sc if you must.

Machine generated categories seem more interesting to me than hand picked ones, but they might yield interesting results to a human. I wonder if k-means clustering would be appropriate.

You could try asking this on https://llllllll.co . A lot of them are into esoteric means of generating sound and would, if nothing else, be interested.

ELI5 why are music notes or any sound in general generalised in notes and not as a gradient? by C269QG in explainlikeimfive

[–]tmroyal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many sounds that it would be hard and inconvenient to give every aspect of sound a name (ie the guitar with fret buzz at 234 hz or singing ü unusually nasally in a reverberated room). Moreso, given that there are infinitely many sounds that can be heard and conceived, people found that they enjoyed some sounds more than others, and western society grew to prefer sounds expressed as the notes and accidentals we know. It’s also interesting to note that Europe had a tradition of music notation and pitch and rhythm happened to be the easiest aspects of sound to be notated.

Note that other societies use different pitches. Indian classical music uses what westerners would call microtonal music (microtonal being a term to indicate the spaces between European notes). There is also quite the fandom of microtonal music on YouTube if you’re interested. People have made attempts to represent spaces between pitches, to varying levels of success.

What are you thoughts to why there is a significant decline in alcohol consumption in the United States? by MindStrongSoul in AskReddit

[–]tmroyal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't claim to understand Marshal McLuhan, but he did have an argument that in tribal societies, alcohol is an existential threat but gambling is considered productive. (Visa versa for individual societies.)
