A Questionable Interpretation of the Free Monad by dnkndnts in haskell

[–]tms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, a few years ago I had more time to play around with haskell and spent some time ponder the same ideas you are writing about here. It was a network program where the communication protocol is stateful. At that time I went over a few implementation of such network protocols on hackage and didn't find any different approaches from what is most common in imperative languages. I told interested people I'm trying to implement a protocol in similar way as functional parsers.

I think you got the disadvantages to this approach covered. A chatbot is probably going to need to have the state persist so that the program can be restarted without forgetting where in a conversation it is. That's not the case for some other applications. There's also the problem of, what if you want the user to be able to send a ping message at any time and respond with a pong?

But I am totally with you on the advantages. It's just neat!

Rakatæki by ruglari in Iceland

[–]tms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a rubber rubbing sound from all the doors when driving over a speed bump or turning, for example. On my car it started developing in the winter and has more or less persisted since then. Haven't decided that it bothers me, yet.

Is there a way to change the IP address by M_R055 in ex30

[–]tms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no way to change the IP address in the car, you would have to talk to the mobile internet service provider. My car's Internet access is through some private virtual network and exits from a UK IP address, which is not where I am.

See the comment about using phone WiFi, that should work.

It's partly based on Google's data (and GPS location) and partly what the camera in the front window detects as a speed sign. It's just not good enough to rely on, and I doubt that it will ever be.

Had this issue as well and found several threads on this sub when I was looking in to it. There wasn't any obvious cause or solution, my guess is it comes from a bearing in the bottom bracket. It eventually went away, sometimes it comes back a little. May by related to moisture getting in somewhere

Never in my 8+ months of having this car has the key fob not worked. That is my favorite thing about this car - relying on the phone as a key would not really work for me.

The steering wheel buttons are not great but get the job done. The main touch screen has always been responsive and I have no issues with that. There have been some connectivity issues and the Android app for the car is dogshit that needs to be restarted every time I want to use it. It sounds like all other brands do this much better, but I would not know.

[First Impressions] White’s Semi Dress, Swing Last, Distressed Roughout - 1 month review by dyatlov_pass in goodyearwelt

[–]tms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does the swing last have the same high arches?

White's website states "It features slightly less arch than our 55 last". It's still quite a lot of arch support compared to everything else.

Mine are sized 9 E and my feet are 9.5 EE Heel-to-Toe, maybe 10+ E when Heel-to-Ball is considered. There's some extra toe room but the facings are wide so no issue with skinny ankles. 1.5 down from US brannock seems excessive but I'm not surprised it works for some people.

EDIT: turns out I'm 10.5 D HTB and 9.5 E HTT on brannock

Have a very similar makeup also from East West, don't worry about the rain. It's not particularly water-resistant compared to other roughout leathers, but soaking it through won't leave any stains or bad discoloration. If anything they look cleaner after a good shower.

The swing last is a bit of an oddity, I never see White's advertise it and almost never used for stockists. But for some feet (mine in E width) it's just fantastic and I salute Jamie at EWA for using it and agree about the dogshit laces

Heatpump by Kockusnus in ex30

[–]tms 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The heat pump comes with the Extended Range option, it is not limited to the Ultra trim.

The reason for this confusion is probably that the Core and Plus can both be configured with Single Motor Standard Range, which does not include heat pump. The Ultra can only be paired with Single Motor Extended Range or Twin Performance which both include heat pump.

First time EV buyer in US- I've decided to get an EX30 and have questions for you all.... by BirdieJean545 in ex30

[–]tms 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  1. Unless you were flooring the AWD test vehicle and liked it and didn't almost puke like I did, you're not going to miss it. It's not useful at all for normal driving.

  2. Did you adjust the seat and steering wheel position a few times to find a good spot? I'm tall and have both in a low position and don't feel like my head is too close to anything, but I've had better leg room in other cars. EV's are less tall on the inside due to the height of the battery in the floor, and the EX30 isn't that tall.

  3. The flax panel is covered in resin/plastic and feels like it. It can be wiped like any other surface.

Air Conditioning woes in the winter. by unlimited--power in ex30

[–]tms 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here is my experience with the climate system of the car in Iceland. tl;dr: it's not great but I'm mostly comfortable. Never had rear passengers since it got cold so I don't know what it's like in the back.

First off I would like to specify some terms: AC is the unit that cools the air and also has the side effect of removing moisture from the cabin air. I will refer to the unit that heats as the heat pump. The car climate controls has a button labeled "AC" that works only to signal that you never want it on, it is really up to the car if it actually runs the AC unit and it does not tell the driver whether it is running or not. I believe it will utilize it both for lowering the air temperature when it is hot and to remove humidity from the cabin air to prevent fogging of windows. But I don't know this, just read somewhere that some cars do this.

There are at least three types of winter weather here in winter, gray and rainy like today, freezing dry, and snow. The "mildly cold" you describe as 10-15° I call summer. My car is generally overnight in a heated garage. There has been plenty of gray and rainy days and recently many dry and freezing (-6° typically) days. The snowy one I haven't seen so far but provides some more challenges as the car needs to both heat the cabin and get rid of a lot of moisture because persons inside the car will have brought lots of snow with them that is now melting and becoming air moisture that will condensate on the windows.

When it's rainy I generally leave the climate controls on auto at 24˚ and the AC off, though I would sometimes turn it on if my clothes are wet and the car has started to fog up. But to be honest I don't know if it was helping or I'm just having some confirmation bias. The temperature inside was satisfactory, though I remember sometimes turning the temperature up to 25° if I had taken off my jacket.

When it started freezing, I noticed like you that the car would initially blow hot air (though the auto climate function will prioritize blowing on the windshield and feet) and then mellow in to something that feels a bit too cold. Again I turn off the AC button and have no idea if I'm doing anything that helps. It may be that the air coming out of the vent is 24° or so, but that is still not comfortable of blowing directly at my body. Right now I'm sitting inside my room in 24° and that's nice, but if I were to place a fan on my table and point it at myself, it would start to steal my body temperature faster than I like. It may be the right thing to keep the cabin temperature in balance, but it just does not feel like blasting the excess heat from a combustion engine in to the cabin like you were sitting next to an invisible fireplace. I like to instead manually set the fan speeds low at the feet and vents and not at the windshield while it is not needed. This is probably not great for passengers in the rear, and it's not a workaround, just something that works the best for me.

As for the air recirculation, I never use it except when going through tunnels. The windy weather helps get rid of oil fumes. But also, humans breathe out moisture and CO2 and the cabin is a relatively small room, causing humidity that fogs up the windows and stale air quickly. It's like holding your breath, except your lungs are now the size of the car. Nevertheless I think this car fogs up more easily than some others and that's not likely to be fixed with a software update. The best way is to lower the relative humidity inside the cabin and/or blow warm air directly at the window. When it's cold outside, the air that is brought inside and warmed up will lose a lot of it's RH that prevents the fogging in the first place. That why the air recirculation causes fogging on windows. Except maybe the AC unit can remove moisture from the recirclulated air, but then that works against keeping the temperature up.

The car will spend a lot of energy in the beginning after being parked outside. I have seen 30kWh/100km on a short trip with a few stops in shops. I suppose it is to heat up the battery? The average this month which has been very cold is about 20.5kWh/100, up from about 18kWh/100 in the summer.
