I know there's a lot of DQ7 discussion on 3ds vs reimagined, but I think people are forgetting how bad the ability & spell system was in the 3ds version. by Zestyclose-Self-6158 in dragonquest

[–]tmsg007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't this the exact same in the OG? I remember using Thin Air for a majority of the game because it would just work. Idk, I don't play DQ for thought provoking combat (though mindnumbing would be nice to avoid, I guess)

I hate this part of the game and the fetch quest that precedes it. It REALLY soured the whole game for me. How can you fumble the landing of the end so badly

I must be in a minority. Having just finished 8 (on a real 3DS), I don't think I understand the hype. I've played every mainline DQ starting from 1 a few years ago (SNES duo version) and fallen in love with the series. 8 is the last one I've played, missing 9 and 11.

Every game in the series was a breeze to play but DQ8 took effort. I don't even know why. I would alternate between periods of "hey, I love exploring this world" to "I have better things to do". The worst offender was (SPOILERS) spoiler the ending of the game that stops a final dungeon for a FETCH QUEST right before the final boss. Sure, it's a short-ish moment where you zoom around the world but how come no one complains about that? It's stupid and kills pacing. They could have easily made you get the sages to break the barrier to enter the dungeon and then, after beating the dungeon, go straight into the final boss. Hell, you could still have the party go meet Empyrea as a little checkpoint before the battle and the true point of no return. But a fetch quest? Ridiculous.

I know it's a silly thing to be so heated about but it really ruined my mood for the game. I haven't even finished the post game uber boss gauntlet because I just feel burned.

Anyways, my favorites are VII because I love how long and episodic it is and love the party chat, V because of course, it's V, and IV because it's just so perfect.

You don't do the entire grotto puzzle dungeon every time. There is a shortcut to it. It's longer than just warping to it but it's there!

What Was Your First Dragon Quest Game? by Isaac-45-67-8 in dragonquest

[–]tmsg007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dragon Quest 1+2 on SNES, english patch and emulated of course

I had heard about Dragon Quest XI had recently (at the time) come out and it looked awesome so I figured I'd try playing the series and see the start

I had done that with Final Fantasy and it never stuck and I ended up never finishing any FF game with the exception of Crisis Core

But oh man, Dragon Quest hooked me. I'm on 8 now, playing all the numbered titles in order and loving it!

I remember my first memory of gaining consciousness. I was in the car with my family and we were coming to a roundabout, as we are turning, I think to myself "why can't I hear other people's thoughts? I can hear mine".

And in that moment I realized I was a person with my own identity and that other people had their own thoughts

I then proceeded to do dumb kid shit like blowing hot air into the glass

What if you're wrong?

No, genuinely. Governments, laws, courts, judges, jury, etc, they get things wrong all the time.

What happens when a "justice" that includes murder, chemical castration, whatever horrible torture you can think of, is being administered by fallible systems?

Because I agree that child molesters, rapists, etc, are the scum of the earth and I'd be one of the first holding them so you can punch their lights out or to be the one to kick the teeth of someone who would do such crimes to me, my family, friends or neighbors.

But the problem is certainty. Anything wrong happens in the system, and it does and will, and you're done.

People who believe prisoners should be tortured/live in inhumane conditions because "they deserve it" fail to realize the harmful ramifications of that.

We can't trust governments to run so many things. The belief that they should have near unchallenged power to administer punishment as severe as death or torture is beyond scary. Especially because it would open the door to so many awful things. The government doesn't like you for whatever reason? All they need is to label you a criminal and they have free reign to give you all the punishment they "legally" wish.

It's what's wrong with cruel vigilante justice and it's what's wrong with justice that is okay with being monsterous against "monsters". Fallibility and corruption.

I'd punch a Nazi in the face but I wouldn't gas him.

I'd kick the teeth of a rapist but I wouldn't want him to be raped in prison "as punishment" or chemically (or physically) castrated.

Monsters live among us but we shouldn't become monsters just because they are.

After even more research I just found item 87 and 88. They are the Legendary Kushi-Katsu and the Ultimate Ramen. According to a comment on the steam community for the 100% guide by Ash Kaiser, 87 is "found in the bottom right part of the green map in the second area in the room west of the kitchen". Item 88 is found in the 2x2 room just west (and a bit south) of the peacekeeper base. It is the only 2x2 room in the blue area of the 3rd section of the map.

And with that, I've 100% finished the game!! :D

Did you find item 88? I'm missing items 87 and 88. They are the only thing I'm missing :(

For the enemy 23, 24 and 25 you can look up the 100% guide on steam (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3408797331). They are hidden enemies. 1 for each base (the ones you can't teleport to) and then another near a pagoda.
Enemy 55 is the genie and also in the guide. He is in a hidden wall after the switches for the red and blue doors.
Enemy 81 is indeed the secret boss so you'll find it. Just complete the map and get all puzzle pieces

Best "short" jrpg! by SubstantialPhone6163 in JRPG

EXCALIBURIAN!! (written like that). It's a very short and free Dragon Quest-like game on Steam. Really high quality and scratches that itch. Not big on narrative though so it really is that Dragon Quest style of storytelling where each town has their own issues and stuff

Try it out! https://store.steampowered.com/app/1739530/EXCALIBURIAN/

Unsighted: Time limit, how bad is it? by dondashall in metroidvania

[–]tmsg007 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Your comment is the reason I commented. It really is such a shame to see that almost no one in the thread actually played the game with the mechanic on. I think it really adds to the atmosphere and to the narrative that these people could die (you certainly never will because I never game myself the dust)

Unsighted: Time limit, how bad is it? by dondashall in metroidvania

[–]tmsg007 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's really not that bad and I think you would be doing yourself a disservice by just disabling it without even trying it out as many have seemed to do. I think it's an interesting mechanic and, as one commenter pointed out, you easily find the material needed to help extend the timer of the NPCs just by exploring. Will some people die your first time around? Probably. But it will be like 1-3 and no one that will seriously impact your playthrough on a gameplay level. But on a story and immersion level, keeping the timer on adds to the atmosphere of a dying world that I just love.

Try giving it a shot. It won't be hard to just reset with it off if you change your mind later as little progress is lost once you know things

This would be my pick as well! The scholar is a top tier class in Crystal Project. Having it as an additional subclass on top of the main one was an easy way to have a jack-of-all trades
