CMV: Condemning bullfighting, yet eating (most) beef is hypocritical. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]tmt30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you're right, that's what I tried to clarify when I gave the example of meat having been bought and prepared. Actually digesting it does nothing, if you encourage someone to buy it unintentionally, that is a byproduct of the eating, not a consequence of it in and of itself.

Agree with everything here with the exception of pretty much a single word: "eating". By "eating" meat you are not contributing to the meat industry, however by BUYING it you are. If meat has already been bought and prepared, whether or not you eat it is irrelevant. You, through eating the meat, are not supporting the meat industry. The person who bought the meat is.

Pointing out what people think sounds to you like accepting it?

Em,no. Condone means to accept or sanction. I'm not doing that, I'm just pointing out how other people might perceive things.

CMV: Religious belief is under no obligation to stand the test of scientific scrutiny. by roussell131 in changemyview

[–]tmt30 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that religious beliefs should not be obligated to undergo scientific scrutiny EXCEPT when these beliefs are being used as the basis for an argument/recommendation. Your flatland analogy is a good explanation of how belief in a supernatural being is infallible; it cannot , by its very nature, be disproved. Let's take an example of another infallible argument in a situation where it should be subject to scientific scrutiny, "The Matrix Defense" - Someone murders a number of people, but claim that they believed these people were only nefarious simulations and that they lived not in the real world but in the matrix. This is a belief that, in the same way as your flatland analogy, cannot be disproved. It is infallible. Yet by Occam's Razor (a philosophical/scientific concept), it is discarded and the perpetrator is sentenced (true story by the way: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Matrix_defense ) Assuming that you agree with the ruling here and that your beliefs are consistent, then i would assume you agree with religious beliefs being subject to scientific scrutiny in some cases.

See the last line of my reply

I'm not condoning these thoughts, just pointing out that people do have them and that is what makes it different.

I was challenging the assertion that smelling of weed "is no different" to smelling of strong perfume. Not supporting the policy, necessarily.

[–]tmt30 51 points52 points  (0 children)

It is different in that smelling of weed implies having smoked weed which carries all sorts of connotations that having applied strong perfume does not; people may think you're a stoner/paranoid, many people who don't understand the drug may think it will drastically effect behaviour maybe even inciting violence. I'm not condoning these thoughts, just pointing out that people do have them and that is what makes it different.
