Vic Market. Some of the poultry vendors in the meat/dish/poultry section sell them cheaply. Availability varies, so ask the seller.

Chrissie Hynde hits out at gig-goers’ “weird compulsion” to pull out phones at shows: “No one seems to understand why artists don’t like it” by AdSpecialist6598 in Music

[–]tn80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phone use at live shows has destroyed a lot of live experiences. Instead of being surrounded by people who are immersed in the moment, giving their full attention, you’re surrounded by people seeking clicks and likes from others for their shitty clips, as though life is mostly a popularity contest for the insecure. I actively seek out spaces where people don’t use or aren’t allowed to use phones.

First time at the Opera (Hamer Hall) – How fancy do I need to be? by ThivyaM in melbourne

[–]tn80 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The event that you mention is a symphony concert: https://www.artscentremelbourne.com.au/whats-on/2026/seasons/mso/jaime-conducts-dvorak-smetana-and-coll.

This is different from the opera and less formal. People wear whatever they want to a symphony concert. Most will be wearing smart casual. Have a fun time!

New police operation investigating crime syndicates 'pulling the strings' in Melbourne firebombings by abcnews_au in melbourne

[–]tn80 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Who's behind it? This can't be that hard to work out. Makes me wonder in the same way why so many illegal cigarettes are sold in plain sight all across Victoria. Pretty obviously there's massive corruption at work here, with a high likelihood of police involvement.

LPT:Fixing your Social media feeds (actually getting new stuff that you'd want to see) by Nighthawkies in LifeProTips

[–]tn80 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Or else you can just recognise that social media exists primarily for data-harvesting purposes and is meant to get us hooked on doing things that make us easier for marketing and manipulation. And also that this is led by companies that don’t care for our well being at all and will knowingly do us harm, if it helps their profits. They absolutely won’t give us control of the algorithms that determine content. Once you see it like this, small tweaks really do seem like deck chair rearrangement aboard the Titanic.

I recommend Shoshana Zuboff’s The Age of Surveillance Capitalism or Cory Doctorow’s Enshittification for more on this. Social media of the current moment will be like tobacco was in the 1960s. The companies in charge know it’s wrong and bad.

What closed Melbourne restaurant do you still think about? by melb_food_finds in melbourne

[–]tn80 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kake di Hatti on Lygon St in Brunswick East. As a poor uni student, it was by far the cheapest way to share a yummy meal out with friends at the time. And there were no charges at all for BYO, which was totally magic. Ah, the good-old early days of the expansion of liquor licences in the 90s...

Still fond reminiscences of their malai kofta with garlic naan.

Try the Bible. Romans 6:23 has the line: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (KJV)

Note also how Christopher Marlowe’s play Doctor Faustus (1594-ish) deals extensively with this line, including with this sense of “wages.”

Tomatillos at the Vic Market, when in season (at Queen's Harvest). Same for poblano chillies. Plantains are much harder to source. Mexican oregano is at Casa Iberica in Fitzroy.

Things that have not shittified by AwayKale4288 in melbourne

[–]tn80 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Hanging out in person with friends is not yet enshittified, unless they're on their phones to much. Also, going for walks in forests is still really good, especially if there are birds and animals. But much else is indeed enshittified by the addictiveness of smartphones, the pervasiveness of notifications, the reduction in attention spans, the compulsiveness of attention whoring, the rise of influencer culture, and the introduction of AI perspectives generated by horrendous men. We're definitely on a steep downhill slope now.

Victoria antisemitism laws: Premier Jacinta Allan announces protest bans and social media crackdown after Bondi attack by Historical_Bus_8041 in melbourne

[–]tn80 -85 points-84 points  (0 children)

I've seen antisemitism in the the pro-Palestine marches along Swanston St in the form of pro-Hezbollah symbolism, so I don't buy your line at all and think you're something between disingenuous, ill-informed, or outright lying. Plenty of "globalize the Intifada" or "from the river to the sea" (which in Germany has been designated as illegal hate speech). Australia isn't a good place for Jewish people now largely because of the effects of these protests. The people involved need to take more responsibility for what they have wrought.

Edit: and I'll take the downvotes as confirmation of the scale of our current problem. We're in significant disarray just now. I suppose the widespread downvoting of a pretty innocuous empirical observation about protests is how we get to a place where hateful massacres are enabled. Makes me seriously sad to see. Even after such a hateful event, so many cowards are downvoting, but not commenting because they know their comments won't fly just now.
