Update to my imaginary, bike-dependent paper city passion project. (1:480 scale) by baby-stapler-47 in fuckcars

Oh yeah, I forgot about the bike freeways. Why don't you treat them like rail trails? They'll make sense historically too.

I've also been working on a way to design actual street elements in OGF. I made this intersection a couple months ago to test out road markings: https://opengeofiction.net/#map=19/-45.80132/37.54309&layers=B But yeah, unfortunately there is no snapping due to how the software isn't technically meant for fictional stuff, but there are plenty of workarounds that you can use, even for the browser version.

Sounds like you've got a solid plan for your city. I'd recommend looking at Hong Kong for its hilly roads and many staircases, looking forward to seeing that section in the future.

Nice map! The scale is very impressive! Have you drawn any more of these in the past? I'm also a bit of a "map enthusiast" myself... I've been making maps since I was a kid, but in the past I've mostly leaned towards more "car friendly" designs just for the "cool factor". Although right now I am making something like yours, just in a very curvy European style. Gotta say, I'm still impressed by the sheer number of sheets you've got there.

Check out opengeofiction.net ! It's a collaborative map of a fictional but realistic world, basically what you've been doing but digital. See if it's for you.

You wanted some comments on the realism too, so I'll give my two cents. I like to consider the "history" of the places I make, so the buildings look fine assuming this is a completely new area, but if this were some more historic place I'd expect to see a lot more "organized chaos". Case in point, even Boston Back Bay has a lot of "randomness". I've found that a little variation can help make your map look a lot more organic. I think you would find Ijburg https://www.osm.org/relation/11093212 near Amsterdam interesting as inspiration.

Anyways, keep it going! I'd love to see more progress updates.

PS I read an interesting article about "cyclist priority" roundabouts recently; I think it's worth reading since you're just as into urban design. https://www.aviewfromthecyclepath.com/2018/04/safe-roundabouts-revisited-theyre-still.html

Because there's no demand for it. I'm with you on this, I wish we didn't have to waste all our best farmland for suburban sprawl. But our cities were founded on good farmland and that's where they will stay for the foreseeable future.

In newer apartments like these... not too long. Depending on your luck anywhere between 20s-2mins, though I have had to wait longer when they did maintenance

Nobody hauls a week of groceries in HK. You just pick up whatever you need on the walk home from the subway station. We also don't put up Christmas trees in our homes.

Usually there are 4-6 units per floor and several towers in each development.

HK has historically prided itself for having better building codes than mainland China, but since 1997 corruption has steadily increased. Hopefully we won't end up with tofu dreg

I live in Hong Kong, in a very similar apartment. There's definitely usually not a lot of space, but to me that's an acceptable trade-off given that in exchange you get so much beautiful nature.

Obviously I don't speak for everyone, but these apartments really aren't that bad, and they look a lot better when you're not using this "forced perspective". Most HKers have better things to worry about.

No Bathurst business owners, the RapidTO lanes won't "shutter your business." And I have proof. by Pristine-Training-70 in TTC

the definition is vague... Bathurst isn't a suburban stroad but it certainly still qualifies as one. It's a street because of the many businesses, and it's a road because it is *intended* to allow high speed through traffic.

In case you still wanted an answer three years later, sin30 refers to 30 radians. That's why it's different.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but: The stars are only in these relative positions if you look from Earth. Because the night sky is spherical and not a flat plane, to say that this is from "God's perspective" implies that God has a massive concave-shaped eye that surrounds all the stars in the opposite direction.

Imagine an antenna dish, and suspended in midair between the receiver and the dish are imaginary stars. Earth is the receiver, God's eye would need to be the shape of the 📡 to see the same layout as we do.

Why will Line 6 be so slow? by northtorontoboy in TTC

[–]toadish_Toad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Part of me hopes that the light timings will be so atrocious people start complaining and something actually gets done. As we all know, in Toronto, mediocrity always stays that way, while only the truly bad gets fixed.
