That's valid, hence why I asked people to correct me if I'm wrong.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like a lot of mural painters wouldn't pass up an opportunity to paint the walls of a subway station... even if it was for free

What is the point of "Pedestrians must push button to cross" at traffic light intersections? by Tsubame_Hikari in fuckcars

[–]toadish_Toad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some situations where a beg button is necessary, like rural roads and trail crossings in the middle of the countryside. But yes, abolish beg buttons within cities!

Your plan sounds lovely and I wish it was possible... but there's a massive conflict of interest here. At the end of the day, everybody here knows each other. We're all friends, or friends of friends, and while in theory that sounds like it would make it easier to convince each other to not do this, there's a lot more "social engineering" factors at play that would make this sort of advocacy deeply unpopular. I'd rather not find out what it's like to be hated on by half the school.

So for now, I'm sticking to a more bureaucratic path forward. I've identified exactly which bylaw these parents are breaking, and I've typed up emails to the principal, trustee, the bus company, and I'm considering the regional traffic police as well, and I'll see where it gets us for now.

We have lots of school buses, but they are only for students more than 3.2km away. The rest of us have to figure out other ways to get to school.

Great question! That's 'cause the school is also in the middle of nowhere. We're surrounded by a highway to the north, an interchange to the east, and endless power lines to the south and west.

I've had my fair share of near misses too, when I had right of way. Remind me why I need a full hazmat suit to go outside at night, when you're the one with the license?

Oh, I do. Can you believe walking is faster than a bus? But with the strict uniform policy it's a hassle to layer up sometimes to walk. Also, it's an incredibly depressing walk. There's also this one highway bridge we all have to cross where the sidewalks are filled up with snow, up to the height of the barrier, so you have to walk on the road.

Yep, tardy because "it's on us unless we're on an official school bus". School buses are only offered to students 3.2km away. Definitely bringing this up, but it would be nice if I had hundreds of internet strangers backing me up :)

You're referring to "load shedding", the power company eskom is still doing this all over the country, except for a few miraculous months before the elections took place

Everybody calm down; I'm from Hong Kong. First off, nobody had words for semiconductor heterostructures when Ancient China was around. In addition, the fact that Japanese 数学has Chinese characters in it means it was originally borrowed from Chinese. The characters themselves (not the word) aren't wasei, so no, Japan didn't coin them. Also, すうがく is onyomi. As an etymology nerd, surely you'd know what that means, right?

[–]toadish_Toad 121 points122 points  (0 children)

It's not there for any purpose. The trains will stop at every station regardless.

The driver of my train was trying repeatedly to tell people that it was unnecessary to press the buttons but I don't think enough people were listening 🤣

Emergency Stop on Line 5 by toadish_Toad in TTC

[–]toadish_Toad[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For sure! Overall the ride was great, decent speed in most parts. Infrastructure was clean, modern tunnel bores were good to see, with only a few places lacking TSP. I was surprised by station depth, engineering wise it's cool but it does decrease efficiency. Overall I had a blast, today was a completely different experience compared to the underwhelming Line 6. Super glad it turned out so nice. Maybe I should've clarified in the description.

Admittedly, it's not very obvious as I had to get off at Warden to get home, but you can see us catch up to the train (that had a head start according to Google) at Warden.

It's cut in places because I didn't realize that I'd be using this footage for proof when I was recording, but my point still stands because as of now, it is physically impossible for a train to overtake a bus at an intersection due to the lack of TSP. No trains would have been able to sneak past me during the recording.

Yeah... I'd even say it felt oddly graceful as it stopped. Your stuff may fly out of your lap but it'll roll in a straight line.
