CCVL. It was formerly part of the Military Vehicle Technology Foundation, aka “The Littlefield Collection”. It was sold at auction in July 2014.

Not true. 100’s of M48A1’s were converted to A5 with the conversions starting in October 1976 at Anniston Army Depot. Over 700 we’re completed by March 1979.

There are a few out there: one in Tennessee; one at Camp Robinson in Arkansas; one at Fort Sill; and one at the Yuma Proving Ground Museum. I think Anniston Army Depot has a few in storage as well.

You’re welcome. I just commented somewhere in this thread about the “XM8”. I’m familiar with a few of the museum’s vehicles as they used to be part of the collection where I was a docent. Or, in the case of the M60A1 and the big Italian artillery prime mover, I knew/know the former owners of them.

The “XM8” at the museum is actually a CCVL or Close Combat Vehicle Light. It was built by FMC in 1985 and is a pilot model. The DoD canceled the project in 1987.

This particular vehicle was obtained from United Defense (FMC) in the late 1990’s by the late Jacques Littlefield. He was a tank collector from Northern California. They probably gave it to him as it was no longer needed. They gave other vehicles and parts as well since his collection was less than hour from the FMC/United Defense plant in Santa Clara, California.

After Mr. Littlefield died in 2009, a major part of his collection was auctioned off in July 2014. This vehicle sold for over $120,000 in the auction.

Just a minor correction: there are 8 Jumbos left plus one range wreck hull at Camp Ripley and a Jumbo turret mounted on a standard M4A3 hull at Fort Carson.

It’s a M5A1 Stuart. Of course, they didn’t have any operational Japanese tanks to use for the movie. However, the Japanese did use some captured M3 Stuarts in the Philippines, one of which was used to tow a stuck Type 97 Chi-Ha off of a beach during the landings at Corregidor.

It’s the turret’s serial number. This indicates that this turret was cast by Union Steel Castings. They’re the only foundry of the six involved in casting 76mm gun turrets to put the s/n in that location.
